It's straight to dvd. You don't need to understand every aspect of the game to understand the story, because the movie story doesn't have much to do with the game's story, although if you're watching the movie and don't know who the Sephiroth guy that they are all complaining about you might as well just give up.

A little fun fact...my friend Will had the movie on reserve since 2002.

Well if u havent played the game u wont know the following
Who Jenova, sephiroth, Rufus, Turks, Cloud, Clouds Group and the general point of the story is

you wont know what happened to Shinra
What the lifestream IS (as the game has a much larger description)
You wouldnt know clouds past or his relationship with Sephiroth
His relationship with Rufus
What is ment by the quote "As expected by the man who calls him self EX-SOLIDER"

have you seen the english vers? i can think of 1 case where it is the opposite, where the english is better than japanese... and thats dragon ball z... but i saw the eng 1st so i may be a bit biased

I watched the english version the other day and they didn't cut out anything (why would they it's a movie?). The voice acting...isn't what I expected, Cid has a southern accent...he does in Kingdom Hearts 2 as well. Vincent's voice is really deep, Red has a british accent, Barret sounds like a stereotypical black guy, and Sephiroth sounds like a normal guy...which made me angry for some reason, and most of the deleted scenes they added suck.

If you don't mind average v/o then by all means buy it...It's still good.
