Harry Potter. No contest. I've read all the books and seen all the movies and I can safely say that it's my favorite book/movie series ever. [=

Twilight just annoys me. It's disappointing that it's so popular - even if most of the target audience IS preteen girls. =/ 

Harry Potter, on the other hand, is for everyone. It started out as a kids' series, but began to mature, which I love. The movies COULD follow the books a little better (especially the 6th one), but they're still fun for me to watch. The series actually has a PLOT, as well - unlike Twilight which takes like 3/4ths of the book to get to it and even then, it's kinda stupid and is resolved too quickly.

I also love the main message of Harry Potter: love and friendship conquer all. 

Twilight is just about how important it is to have a boyfriend. What a stupid message. The movies are laughable. Bad acting all around. And not to sound like a broken record, but: VAMPIRES DO NOT SPARKLE. Ugh.

my friends generaly feel that twilight is for girls who just fancy the actor, and that the actors are terrible beyond belief.

I prefer harry potter as it is a much more expansive world. I do think that it is a bit childish in places, but that is part of its charm. Both are weak in terms of romantic development, but that is acceptable in Harry Potter as it is not the primary focus. Twilight cannot get away with this same flaw as it is an integral part of the story. Twilight also completely ignores the built up mythology surrounding vampires and werewolves. This is quite off-putting to me. Harry Potter does ignore mythology or rewrites it, but it does so in a way that is acceptable by explaining the point of view differences and weave these changes into their universe quite well.
Another reason for my preference of Harry Potter is the fan community. It is diverse and quite creative in their fan creations. Twilight is far too niche for my tastes.

Harry potter of course! the least succesful harry potter movie (the prisoner of azkaban) made more money than the most successful twilight movie.. that sums it up right there.. Only whinny girls and old women love twilight.
