Do you think that there should be religious schools?
To provide grounds for why there shouldn't be religious schools - Students don't get used to having friends from other religions - Kids are forced at a young age to believe in one religion instead of having time to decide for themselves - Adding on to the first point. Students don't get to have much social cohesion with other students of different religions in religious schools To provide grounds for why there shouldn't be religious schools - Students don't get used to having friends from other religions - Kids are forced at a young age to believe in one religion instead of having time to decide for themselves - Adding on to the first point. septembern : Need clarification:
Are we talking about elementary school, middle school, high school, college, all of the above? And define religious school. Are we talking about elementary school, middle school, high school, college, all of the above? And define religious school. |

Aren't there already religious schools? I know of a few Catholic schools in my town. In any case, I don't believe that children don't get used to other children's religions. I had a good friend who I believe practiced Sikhism. He was a great friend to me and I think about him often. |

Why not just have religious schools.? I mean, homeschool, secular private school, public school, religious school. They all have flaws and good things. At the end of the day, they are all for learning. If one wants religion involved, give them that style. We should cater to the many styles of learning. Sure, religious schools get used for punishment, and the like, but the kids in those schools aren't being hurt by the religious stuff.
There's tons of religion-based schools. There's even a few Islam based ones. There's tons of religion-based schools. There's even a few Islam based ones. |

KlawedFlaw : Actually, in this country, there are no requirements that a teacher has to fill for like a Catholic school. They can literally hire a random homeless guy from the street and tell them to teach at the school and it's perfectly fine. The best schools are almost always public schools. |

I don't think that there should be religious schools because religion should be something that an individual chooses and if you stick a kid in a school that teaches something he doesn't believe in, that is just like forcing him to become part of a religion that he may not want to be a part of. |

I would say that it is probably a good thing to have at least some more of them. The kids who go then grow in knowledge and faith. I think that if they had more then more kids would know about Him. |

Private schools should be able to, certainly, so long as it isn't violating some other law. Public schools should be decided on a state level, as it is written in the constitution. However, a curriculum can never be completely unbiased, in the same way that a set of laws cannot be completely unbiased. |

SilverMaestro : I agree with you completely. But here in New York most of the kids ARE in religious schools cause the parents feel as though if they don't teach their children about jesus and the word of god..that they're doing something wrong as far as parenting and being loyal to god. Because it does state in the bible to teach our children about him etc...and as far as the question, I think it's good to have religious schools just so people have the ability to BELIEVE in something higher than humanity. |

I have no problem with religious schools as long as the kid chooses it. But if the kid doesn't want anything to do with God than there is no point to sending him to religious school. |

I don't see a problem with having religious schools, but I do believe that a) teachers at religious schools should meet the same educational criteria as those in non-religious schools, and b) that there should also be schools that are non-religious in nature (aka, religious schools should not replace existing public schools). |

Do you mean in public schools? Then no.I don't think it's fair to foist a religion on someone who may not follow it,though I'm not opposed to students being taught the aspects of different religions in school. In my opinion that would help everyone understand each other better,if that makes any sense. |

Religious schools is a stupid concept.
Religion is about belief, and to hold onto belief people have faith. Science and the act of studying is about observation, observing the world around you to see how it functions, to observe and learn. Faith is the denial of observation so that belief can be preserved and so that religion can thrive, so a religious school is just a concept that can not exist, schools are about furthering education, it teaches you to observe and learn, the whole concept is based on the students observing what the teachers have to teach, and the teachers should teach material that has been observed and studied and confirmed to be facts. So a school that teaches you NOT to observe ? To just belief what someone tells you on the basis that someone else told him that it was the truth ? It already exists, it´s called a church, or any other similar cultist locations that are there to keep the religion of the cult thriving. So to the original question "Do you think that there should be religious schools?" I answer. No, but they already exist. Religion is about belief, and to hold onto belief people have faith. what an ignorant tirade against religion...
some of the most brilliant people of the last 200 years have been religious.... way to not be "observant" and ignore the facts. Also: "The best schools are almost always public schools." This is so far from true it makes me laugh. The public school system is screwed up all over the place. Under-funding, lazy teachers, lazy students, excessive classroom sizes, violence... there is a reason why parents are dying to get their kids into private schools even if it means working more hours. some of the most brilliant people of the last 200 years have been religious.... way to not be "observant" and ignore the facts. Ellert : Faith is by no means denial of observation. Dictionary time!
faith n. 1. Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing. 2. Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence. See Synonyms at belief, trust. 3. Loyalty to a person or thing; allegiance: keeping faith with one's supporters. 4. often Faith Christianity The theological virtue defined as secure belief in God and a trusting acceptance of God's will. 5. The body of dogma of a religion: the Muslim faith. 6. A set of principles or beliefs. Not once is "denial of observations" mentioned. Faith does not require observations or physical evidence, but it does not specifically deny them either. Also, you show ignorance of the fact that the Bible is full of scientific observations, mathematical practices... God wants us to further our education. Get the facts straight next time. Religious schools are good. Not only are the children learning the religion and getting a GOOD education at the same time, their won't be adversity and trouble because of differing beliefs. Parents should have the option to choose to have their children taught somewhere where their faith is shared. faith n. 1. Wow, thank you Geeogree. I was reading this and realized how bad people are at thinking. They don't even really know how private schools function. You just saved my sanity there.
I went to a Catholic High School for a year and i'm not even Catholic. They teach everything and the students there are very smart kids. Of course, it being a religious school, they have a church thing in the morning and a Catholic class is mandatory but I learned more in the private school than in the public school. The environment is a world of difference. The campus grounds is a calm clean place and kids learn in the classroom. When I moved to public again, because tuition to the private school was too high, I realized that public wasn't the way to be. Of course it was more diverse but the environment was more violent and the students cared less. There was a fight on campus grounds everyday, tons of gangs, and the students disrespected the teachers all the time. Eventually at one point there was an ingnorant quarrel, Blacks vs Mexicans and it led to a girl bringing a gun to school. There is nothing wrong with private schools. That is from observance. Just because its religious doesn't make it wrong. EDIT: bigNATE seems to have some sense too! Nice. Of course it was more diverse but the environment was more violent and the students cared less. bigNATE : When you look up something in the dictionary, then read it. It´s not enough to just copy / paste it.
2. Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence. See Synonyms at belief, trust. This means what it says it means, you don´t need material evidence to belief something, this also means that material evidence brought to you can be ignored with faith. Really way to shoot yourself in the leg, you mention that if material evidence is brought then if you have faith you can also accept that, well there already is plenty of material proof that there are no gods and that the Bible and any other religious scripture is false, so fine I may have picked the wrong word with faith, religious schools don´t just have "faith" they have "blind faith", I can discuss this further but only if you ask. Just cos the Bible has scientific observations and math it does not say the ones who wrote it were very good scientists, what kind of a scientist would not be a bit skeptical about something with no tangible proof for it, such as demons and gods. Religious "schools" can have good education, but also bad education, such as education that tells you to be 100% adamant about there being a magical being they must worship. And there won´t be adversity there, but what after ? When you have two religious schools stuffing their religion down the throats of children too young to even make their own mind, what do you think will happen when those two meet ? I was brought up in a school that doesn´t care any about if you are religious or not, it only taught facts and was able to support everything taught there if someone asked, even biology if someone needed proof that for example that a flower would grow better if it got some sunlight the teachers would often go out of their way to let us conduct an experiment to see it with our own eyes. Nearly everyone in my class had Christian parents and got forced to go to church by them as kids on days such as X-mas but not a single person in the class had any religion by the time we left the school, simply said everyone had their own freedom to decide what they wanted to belief but no one found it logical to belief in the magical sky person, and guess what, there was no adversity or trouble going on in my school, unless some kid fights and such silly things that happened only in grades 1-4 or so count. And I really love your parents statement, the way I read it is that it´s good if there is a place where they can place their kid at where their religion will be forced upon them. 2. Ellert : Way to go off topic there. Your entire argument is based upon the assumption that there is evidence that God doesn't exist. (might I direct you to the thread Prove God Exists?) That has nothing to do with the merits of religious schools. Did you even read Cookieman's post? Nothing is thrust down the throats of students. Stop making assumptions.
Now, time for some comprehensive reading lessons: 2. Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence. See Synonyms at belief, trust. Er, hate to break it to you, but the phrase "does not rest upon" says nothing about denying "evidence", it just says it is not built upon evidence, i.e., physical proof is not required. Now for the parents statement. Your argument is basically that parents shouldn't have the right to choose a school for their children. You're so hung up on the assumption that religious schools shove religion down people's throats and throw out detentions for not believing everything that's taught that you're tripping over yourself to rant. By your argument, public schools are at fault for shoving atheism down kids' throats... or is that a double-standard because it's the so-called "truth"?
