I recently read a report in ign that Metroid other M is killing Samus by giving her a personality and having her narrate the game. also criticizing the game writers for giving her PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)while fighting Ridly.

Personally i thought that the game was amazing and that any one who enjoyed the game super Metroid for the SENS should defenitly pick this game up. i would say it places top two games on the Wii.

Tell me what you think about this bash on Metroid. And what you thought of the series as a whole.

I have to agree with jonny5 here. This game was plain and simple awesome-sauce. It really captured that feel that you are exploring unknown territory that I love about metroid.

Sure there will always be critics, but who the hell cares what they think?

To my knowledge, Samus has always had a personality since Super Metroid. I don't see how a game like Metroid: Other M would change that. It actually might make it more interesting because it has a more developed storyline.

I may be going out on a limb here, but I actually agree with the critics. The game didn't need a story line. On the other hand, she's not being "ruined", just a little...changed.

I fail to see how putting an in depth story and giving her more personality and background is killing her. I think it's great how story is becoming a bigger part of the series, and after what she has been through, PTSD is expected.

W/Samus specifically I'm not an expert, but I'd say in general Nintendo is the best company when it comes to keeping characters alive, giving second chances and whatnot. Look at mario and zelda, can anybody compete with that kind of longevity?

Yeah, I totally agree with most of you guys. This is just plain ridiculous with all these critics claiming Samus was "killed by Other M." I can't stand how they keep telling you that too(I'm looking at you IGN.)
Sure, I liked it better when Samus was more cold and defined herself more with her actions, but she had already developed a personality long before this game, and Fusion was really the same concept in terms of narration. So, the script needs a bit of work(She rambles a bit), but the game was a whole lot of fun, and I felt like the fleshing out of Samus was a very welcome addition to the franchise.

I personally thought that Other M was OK, not really bad, but not really good either. I did like the PTSD thing they added, to be honest. And I personally love the Metroid series, especially Metroid Prime 1 & 2.

I LOVED the old Metroid games, but it seems that with every new release that comes out, it becomes slightly less enjoyable, although I am fond of Prime 2, and Other M was a pretty good game, and it filled in some holes in the series.

I really thought that the game was very enjoyable and i cant wait to play through it again.

My favorite parts of the storyline are when samus encounters the different Ridly evolutions. at first i didn't know what that little ball o fluff was until it evolved. then its tail gave it away.

I still think that super Metroid, Metroid fusion and the Metroid prime trilogy for Wii were really good but they don' even compare to Metroid other M.

The only flaw in the story in my opinion is the way they have suit upgrades work. Seriously, you can't just lose it again, now she's not ALLOWED to use them to make the job quicker... and Samus actually listens? That part was idiotic. I would have greatly preferred even the tired "something happens to power down her suit" thing than this joke of a reason.

OK you have a point. but what could have done. well it would have been sweet if they had you start off with all of the wepons and than when she got close to the ridly clone, her suit lost all of her abilitys. but than that wouldn't fit with the storyline.


I liked the way they did the upgrades, it brought more of a realistic feel to the game, besides did you really think that samus would have lost her abilty's after gaining the baby metroids power.

Although she did always seem more BA in every Metroid title leading up to Other M, it just so happened that Nintendo wanted to put a strong emphesis on story in the next Metroid game and put more character and emotion into her. This was a major gamble for Nintendo, the only downside is that when changes like this are made, there will always be people who love it and those who absolutely hate it.

I think it's fine to give her personality and some flaws like that condition that you mentioned. Besides, they could just do what Castlevania often does and go back and forth with the simple WHIP-KILL-TO THE LEFT and more complex gameplay.
