Depends on the person. Most people these days pay no attention to lyrics (which I don't blame them for doing since a lot of the music these people listen to really have no substance to them whatsoever) and really get nothing out of there music. These people will most likely never change because of the music they listen too. Then there are the people who look for music that has something to it. These people have more of a chance of being changed by their music.

I completely agree with Zamiel above me because it is true a lot of people (especially the youth these days) don't pay attention to the lyrics of music and they don't get nothing out of their music. But yes some people can change because of their influence of music.

I'd say instrumental music can really change a mood and drive a feeling better IMO than one with lyrics. However when I look for music I generally look for songs with lyrics that actually mean something and isnt just a line repeated over and over just because it sounds cool.

I don't think it can change your life like a relative being killed could change your life, but I do believe some genres of music can be somewhat therapeutic. I've gotten more into heavy metal and death metal and I'm a bit less short-tempered now because I kind of use it for venting.
