After doing some research, I have found a very interesting fact about the Nintendo 64--it has the same power as a PS2! Being a 64-Bit system, the N64 rivals the PS2 in computing power, and has double the power of an original X-Box, the Gamecube, and the Wii. What I would like to discuss is the lost opportunity that Nintendo had with the N64. If the N64 was disk based, just imagine how Nintendo would have dominated Sony during the late 90s, the Final Fantasy series would have stayed on Nintendo consoles, and the PS era Final Fantasy games could have looked like Final Fantasy X! Now, I grew up with the N64, but looking back, if I could change the N64, I would in a heartbeat. To those who have found this thread, please respond with reactions to understanding the lost power of the N64, weather or not you would have changed the N64 if you could, and possibly reminisce about memories of the N64.

They did want to make a disc attachment for the N64, and Sony was going to make it for them. However, there was a dispute between the two companies and Sony went on their own to make the Playstation.

I really wish they had been able to put discs in the N64, it would have been epic. I think it's that one little setback that has kept Nintendo behind in console power all these years.

I remember that whole thing. I believe it was going to be called the Disc Drive 64 (DD64)) but it never came to be. I remember wondering what had happened to that and why they never brought it to the shelves for us to buy.

Lagslayer : Your informations a little off. Sony was going to make a disk attachment for the SNES not the N64.

No offense but I find this a little hard to believe, any specs to back it up?

How could it have the same power than the PS2 and more power than the Xbox when the Xbox has more power than the PS2? Something wrong with that equation.

Also note that the N64 is 64-bit, Xbox, Dreamcast, PS2 and Gamecube are 128-bit.

I also thought this sounded off but I wasn't sure on the bit power of the other systems. I also think that they would have made the games better if the N64 actually had that kind of power :/

I did a little search on the subject and found that the Nintendo 64DD was only released in Japan and was due to North America in 2000 but it never came to light. Hopefully the picture shows up.

I can actually understand that. It's not very well known tyhat the GameCube was actually more powerful than the PS2, so it doesn't come as a huge supprise that the N64 was its equal.

Regardless, the N64 was an awesome system.

Davideo7 said it, the PS2 is 128 bit. I don't see how you can say that the N64 was close to the computing power of the PS2.
