Quote:
About a year ago, YouTube made a quiet upgrade—it began to support 3D content. But the even neater thing? The work was essentially that of one employee who worked on the project in his spare "20%" time.

It's just so Google, isn't it? Pete Bradshaw, YouTube software engineer, playing around in 3D in his allotted dabbling time, sparks an update in the world's most popular video sharing service.

You may not have even noticed the YouTube was supporting 3D—frankly, before this interview, I had no idea either. But from red and blue anaglyph to eyes-crossing Magic-Eye-style, the service now supports the uploading of stereoscopic footage (two video streams) that it will mix, in real time, right within your browser in a manner of the viewer's choosing.

(Note: To toggle the different ways you can view these embedded videos in 3D, you'll need to view them on YouTube, where they'll be equipped with a 3D pulldown menu.)

No need for 3D glasses to watch the video they've linked!

First off, you need to know how to cross your eyes. If you don't know how, try practising infront of a mirror. Another trick to become familiar with it is to hold a pencil at arms length infront of your face. Then, bring the pencil in slowly, getting closer and closer to your nose until it is touching. Remove the pencil, but try to keep your eyes in the same spot. Voila, crossed eyes.

Now time for the magic:

1)Click on the link in the blog post to the Flower Waltz in 3D.

2)From the drop-down box under the video, select "Cross-Eyed"

3)The video should now be split into two images. While looking directly at the video, cross your eyes. (I found it easiest to cross them to the point at which you have two seperate YouTube windows - or 4 identical images).

4)Slowly allow the images to approach the centre of your vision. If done correctly, the images line up to display 3 pieces of identical-looking video.

The outter two are not your focus - focus on the centre image. Compared to the outter 2, this image now appears 3D. I found it to be very noticeable when the title is displayed in the first 10-15secs of the video. Once I watched for long enough, I became used to it and am now able to blink, relax, etc without losing the 3D effect.

If you can get it to work, I recommend checkin out the parade video uploaded by the same user.

I think it will be interesting for a 3-D Youtube. I think it will be neat, but the Cross-Eyed kind of makes me dizzy, and it hurts my eyes and brain. I hope they can fix that where you can just see it 3D already without the glasses or doing cross-eyes.

3-D Youtube! Interesting, I think that will be an interesting change. Though it makes my eyes hurt a little.

What is it with this fascination of 3D video? Its a luxury that we really don't need. I would rather have other things around YouTube done first...

All that aside though; it certainly is interesting...

I'm not a fan of 3D videos... I'm already seeing double due to my screen ghosting so its even worse on this one. Good way to screw peoples eyes up I might sense a possible future lawsuit in the works But I guess that is good news for 3-D fans.

Those seem pretty awesome!

I tried crossed-eyed, but just can't get the hang of it

I just can't get my eyes to make both pictures one clear picture.

It is pretty awesome though that You Tube has 3D

staying crossed eye for a long time it just annoying and not an effective way to watch, but the 3-D is still a great idea.

Going crossed-eyed is only an alternative to wearing the glasses. Get a pair of those and you'll probably enjoy it a lot better.

I'm not a big fan of 3-D but I can see the appeal.

It's the next wave for viewing TV and movies. I don't think it's a fad, but I also don't get the big deal. So some of the images look closer than others.... it doesn't actually make or break the movie.
