For the Plugin games, any controller can be used. But a dual-analog controller with a precise D-Pad is recommended.

For the Java games, to use a controller you have to download some special software (that doesn't work on Win 7 ). I think the link to the thread with the link to the download is in the RGR... I think. I haven't payed attention to that in a while.

Any kind will work, what you want to download however is called Xpadder, not sure if it costs money but it might, last time I checked it didn't but if it does then just download it from a torrent site. What that is, is basically a tool that configures the controller buttons as keyboard key's per se. It emulates them so you can play basically any game, any where with a controller. Hell you can even use the controller as a mouse with Xpadder if you wanted to. It's fairly easy to set-up and use, any questions about it just ask...or check out this thread for further details:

Right now, I'm using a wired Xbox 360 controller and it works fantastically, no xpadder required (at least from what I've run into, I am admittedly new here).

Well I myself am using a XBOX360 controller as well. Not all games support the use of a controller let alone a 360 controller. Example being Doom 3, no controller support on the PC which is what lead me to Xpadder. There is no way without this or some similiar program from what I seen for you to play the games in the RGR so your best bet is to download that or some similiar program like Pinnacle...

The XBOX 360 Controller is plug and play which means you just plug it in, and it'll work for games that are compatible with a XBOX controller. However, not all games are compatible with a controller nor an XBOX contoller so there is this program Xpadder, described in this thread that you use to emulatoe the controls for all games and such:
