People who built the ship were wrong about the ship being unsinkable. Why would they call it unsinkable if it was built like an ice cube tray (Not asking you guys I am using it as an analogy).

Really?? Ooookkkay, well the Titanic was supposed to be an unsinkable ship, but on its maiden voyage from Europe to America it collided with an iceberg causing it to sink. Because it was thought to be unsinkable there were not enough life boats on the ship which caused hundreds of people to freeze to death in the icy cold waters of the north Atlantic.

I think it was the largest cruise liner ever built up to that point.

And yeah, the big deal was that it was supposed to be unsinkable. I heard that if they had slowed just a little bit when they started to see icebergs that they would have been able to dodge the one they ended up hitting. But it's always possible to know what to do properly after the face

They also could of added more life boats to the ship but decided it would destort the emience of the ship.

They were heading strait into the iceberg. If they hadn't turned to try to avoid it, and hit it head on instead, the damage would have only been to a few compartments at the front of the ship instead of all along the side, and they may have survived.

Do you really need another reason why? A lot of people died and there was a lot of media coverage on the Titanic since it was so technologically advance, supposedly. If it didn't have some much media attention it probably wouldn't have been as famous as it is.

Is it worth sinking? Why on earth would it have deserved to sink? How could that many people dying be "worth" something? I don't understand how there could be a different take on that

hoguan, are you smoking crack? On speed? Seriously, what the f*** is wrong with you. Is it worth sinking? Are hundreds upon hundreds of people, who are innocent, worth dying? No, they're not. I know I'm basically saying what Btown has already said, but seriously dude. What the hell.

Really dude, this thread is so senseless. I might end up closing this if people agree to it because this thread has no point, isn't beneficial, and is really senseless. If I shouldn't close this thread, someone speak up and tell me why, otherwise I'm closing it soon.

Unsinkable... that's like saying a 747 is uncrashable or something. The bigger it is the harder it will go down I think someone jinxed the titanic by saying it was unsinkable.

Yea it was tragic losing all those people and the Titanic itself but it made us realize how much we do not know about the ocean, took what like 30 or so years just to find it. And thanks to the media it is known as the most popular shipwreck of our time.

Yes it is sad for them. And it is a horrible event for them. Dying by drowning and freezing to death would be a horrible event for anyone.

Every time someone comments on what you said, you edit it to something even less worthy of keeping the thread open. Hoguan keeps trying, but it's not working. I think this thread should be closed, JusTReal.

Yeah, that was bad. They should have put as many lifeboats on as there were people.

Of course the titanic was sad. Hundreds of people died. But it happened a long time ago. So I kind of feel this as irrelevant.

Not only were there not enough life boats, but the lifeboats that WERE there were only half full at the point of launch because they weren't sure of the launching weights, so when they did get the lifeboats into the water, they tried to add more people. The ones who were already in the lifeboats were afraid of anyone else boarding would tip it and they'd all die.

- I just saw a special on it, and they proved that it wasn't the side damage that took out the ship, it was actually the double bottom that was sheared off in a 70 ft. section that caused it to go down. More research is to be done on it because of this discovery.

The builders of the ship did not call it unsinkable, the media did. In fact the exact words were "Practically Unsinkable". I've seen the original article when I wrote a paper on it.

As for the lifeboats, they were actually up to code as far as safety regulations went... in fact they had more than required. The problem was that the code had been written in 1888 when the largest ship was much smaller. Thus White Star Line did not want to add the excess boats because they feared that people would think something was wrong.

The impact of the sinking was huge, actually. We have the US Coast Guard today because of it, as well as the International Ice Patrol (run mostly by the USCG). Shipping lanes were moved farther south and new regulations were made regarding life boat requirements and telegraph operations. The Californian, a ship that was close enough to get to the Titanic, had just turned off their telegraphs minutes before the SOS call came over the air. This was standard operation at the time because the tapping kept the operator up all night if left on. That changed quickly.

Also, Titanic finalized the standardization of SOS as the official distress call. Before that, the Marconi Wireless Operators intermixed it with the older CQD signal.

The reason that the Titanic and her sister ships (Olympic and Brittanic) were being labled "unsinkable" was because of the new Double-bottom technique of building. The biggest problem ships had was running aground and ripping out their bottoms, but with a double bottom it was eliminated. Also, there were bulkheads compartmentalizing the hold of the ship with watertight doors. The really were three major problems: they needed a double hull, not a double bottom; the bulkheads only went to D deck and not all the way up; and they had a corridor that ran the length of the ship called Scotland Road that the crew and Third Class passengers used... guess what happened when the water in the front hit that corridor?

As for the impact. Yes, if they had hit the iceberg dead on there was a chance that the ship could have stayed up and made it to New York. However it would have killed a lot of people... half of third class and the crew. They took what they thought was the safer choice.

Also, one of the things that doomed the ship entirely was the use of sub-standard steel for the rivets. When the iceberg hit, they buckled and the hull ripped open. They shouldn't have done that. If the steel had been good, there might not have been as much water and they might have made it. Again, another what if.

So, in case you haven't noticed, I know a LOT about the Titanic. I worked at one of the exhibits when it came through town, I have done a lot of reading, and I wrote a twelve page research paper on "The Cultural Attitudes Towards Technology and Their Affect on the Sinking of the RMS TITANIC". You want info, I have answers.
