I did a thread about the 1975 hurricane season in general. The 1975 season was an average season due to a La Nina. Normally, La Nina enhances hurricane activity. However, 1970-1994 was when ASO was negative this is known as a cool phase. Thus, the La Nina helped push hurricane activity into the average range. 1975 is remembered for modern computer models being used regular, they have become more advanced since then, better technology, and Hurricane Eloise. Eloise was the most destructive hurricane of the 1975 season, so this thread is going to be about Eloise.

On September the 7th a tropical wave moved off the coast of Africa. However, Satellite data showed the wave was poorly organized. Computer models did not start to developing the wave into it reached the Central Atlantic due to wind shear. The wave remained very disorganized for the next several days.

On September the 12th the wave was starting to develop a circulation as it had moved into the Central Atlantic and was in a favorable environment. On September 13th satellite data, Hurricane Hunter Aircraft and shipping data showed the wave had banded together and winds were 35 mph, so it was classified as a tropical depression. On September 15th the depression became Tropical Storm Eloise. On September 16th/17th Eloise became a category 1 hurricane. After becoming a hurricane Eloise made landfall on the Dominican Republic/Haiti border. Later that night Eloise was steered southward into Cuba.

For the next few days Eloise hugged the Cuba coastline as a 50 mph tropical storm. It was just enough over water to survive, but its interaction with the mountains disrupted its core. On September 20th Eloise emerged in the Gulf. Computer models showed Eloise becoming a category 2 hurricane and making landfall in Alabama or Florida.

On September 21st Eloise began rapid intensification going from a 60 mph tropical storm to a 90 mph high end category 1 hurricane. The following day Eloise strengthened into a high end category 2 hurricane. On the 23rd Eloise became a major hurricane with winds 125 mph making Eloise a high end category 3 hurricane. Later that evening Eloise made landfall in the Florid Panhandle near Panama City Florida at peak strength. On the 24th now farther inland Eloise lost is tropical characteristics.

Eloise was a destructive hurricane. In the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba 20 people lost their lives but the amount of damage was scarce. In Puerto Rico (US Territory ) 30 people lost their lives. In Florida and inland Eloise was blamed on 30 deaths. In the United States, Including the USA territory of Puerto Rico, 60 people perished from Eloise. In Florida Eloise produced a storm surge of 12/13 feet and wind damage. In the United States Eloise caused $680 million in damages. Overall, Eloise caused 80 deaths and $680 million in damages.

Due to the high death toll and the severe damage. The Name Eloise was retired the following year. Even though modern computer models were in their early stages they did a decent job of predicting Eloise as they showed Eloise becoming a significant hurricane in the Gulf even if they underestimated the intensity. Most of the other storms from 1975 had minor impacts. Eloise though was the sole and most destructive hurricane from the 1975 season which occurred 50 years ago. This hurricane is still referenced today.
