February 2015 was a very active month meteorology wise in the United States. A series of 4 winter storms hit the United States. On February 28th another winter storm developed. On February 28th a storm system moved onto the west coast of the United States. This storm produced flooding rains in California as it was rich in moisture known as the Pine Apple express as it was drawing moisture from the Pacific. Also the storm was enhanced by an El Nino. This low merged with a frontal boundary in the Midwest.
Snow begin to spread into the Midwest. However, for the second half of February most of the country had way below average temperatures due to a Polar Vortex and cold wave. As the storm moved eastward it also begin to tap into Gulf Moisture.
In the southern United States warm air aloft was pulled into the storm system from the Gulf. This created freezing rain in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. As the cold air begin to take over the warm air the freezing rain changed to snow.
