1994 was 30 years ago. 1994 was filled with several weather events from blizzards, floods, and tornadoes. 1994 was also historic in the field of Meteorology. A brand new type of Satellite was launched called GOES. GOES could collect more data on storm formation than previous satellites could. Also a lot of the computer models were upgraded similar to how they are in 2024.

1994 was influenced by an El Nino. El Nino is the opposite of La Nina. It is a naturally occurring event that occurs in the ENSO region of the Equatorial Waters of the Pacific Ocean. El Nino occurs when water temperatures in the ENSO are warmer than 0.5°C from average for at least 5 months. 1994's El Nino developed in the Spring and lasted 9 months.

I looked back on some of the historic weather events from 1994.

January 18th-22nd 1994- A very historic cold wave impacted parts of the Midwest mainly the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Some locations set record lows at -50°F. In addition, a lot of places had highs below 0. The very historic cold wave caused 100 deaths.

February 9th-11th 1994 Ice Storm- Cold air was pulled down into the southern states of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Kentucky. A storm system had warm air pulled in aloft from the Gulf of Mexico. The result was a severe Ice storm. Most places received 0.5-1.5 inches of freezing rain. The ice storm caused millions in damage, lots of power outages and shut down cities for days. Mississippi was the hardest hit as some cities in Mississippi had 2-3 inches of ice.

March 2nd 1994- A powerful Nor'Easter slams parts of New England causing 50 mph winds, heavy rain, and heavy snow for inland areas. Some locations saw 18 inches of snow.

March 27th 1994- Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak. A deadly and powerful tornado outbreak occurred on Palm Sunday in the states of Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. The State of Tennessee was also impacted. Severe Thunderstorms developed and produced damaging winds and tornadoes. The storms in Tennessee produced 80 mph straight line winds. Georgia was the hardest hit especially North Georgia were several long track tornadoes touched down. Overall 29 tornadoes touched down, 40 people were killed, and $150 million was done in damages.

Mid April 1994 Tornado Outbreak- A tornado outbreak occurred in the Midwest and Southern United States. This multi day event impacted the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Indiana, and Ohio. Several long tracked tornadoes occurred doing millions of damage. Over 50 people perished.

April 25th-27th 1994 Tornado Outbreak. A large tornado tornado outbreak occurred in the states of Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia. Overall 6 people were killed and $140 million dollars of damage was done. This outbreak produced 100 tornadoes.

June 9th-10th 1994- Tennessee Floods. Clusters of heavy thunderstorms moved across the state of Tennessee. Middle and East Tennessee flooded. Some locations received over 10 inches of rain in a 12 hour period. The Columbia and Tennessee Rivers flooded. 31 people died in the flood.

Early July 1994- Tropical Storm Alberto makes landfall on the Gulf Coast. Alberto produces historic flooding in Alabama, Georgia and the Panhandle of Florida. Flooding from Alberto causes 31 deaths and $1.03 Billions of dollars in damage.

August 11th 1994 Hurricane John forms in the Eastern Pacific. John would last a total of 31 days setting a record. The hurricane had little land impacts.

August 27th 1994- A tornado outbreak occurred in Wisconsin producing 12 tornadoes. 4 people died in the outbreak.

October 18th/19th 1994 A tropical low stalls in Southeast Texas leading to flooding. Houston Texas recorded 30 inches of rain in a 48 hour period. The floods caused 17 deaths and hundreds of millions dollars worth of damage. The high rate of water caused several gas pipes to burst after the water went down a major fire broke out.

November 6th 1994- Historic flooding from an active storm track occurs in Piedmont Italy. killing dozens of people

Middle November 1994- Hurricane Gordon causes severe Flooding in Haiti as a tropical Storm. The Floods claim over 1,100 lives and over $500 million in damages. Gordon would become a hurricane after it moved away from Haiti.

November 26th-28th- A tornado outbreak occurs in Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky producing multiple tornadoes killing 3 people as a lot of the tornadoes occurred at night.

November 30th 1994- The Atlantic Hurricane Season ends with a below average season. Only 7 named storms formed and 3 became hurricanes. However, it was costly as $1.6 billion dollars worth of damage was done and 1,200 people died. Most of the deaths occurred from Gordon while most of the damage was done from Alberto.

1994 was a deadly year concerning tornadoes, and floods. The Southeast was hit hard with winter storms in the winter and tornado outbreaks in the spring. The summer months brought historic floods to a lot of southern states.

Wow, a lot of tornado outbreaks! Also, there was a lot of flooding, I'm surprised. That is a big review in Meteorology, I'm hoping to see one for last year if you haven't already.

thanks for the idea I plan on making one from last year. It might take me a few days though. As 2023 had lots of wild weather events.
