I don't watch too many anime but 2022 had some of the greatest shows I've ever seen. Relatively spoiler free post.
To start, Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2 was unbelievable. The way they've handled the protagonist and his interactions with other characters is something I've never seen before. Without giving anything away, the scene where a character is told "Nothing will go your way moving forward" was absolutely stunning and terrifying. I was expecting them to give a different ending to the manga after the negative reception it had, so I was thinking the series would end after the second part with some material cut out. Shockingly, they've announced a part 3 for later this year with no changes to how it ends.
Second, we've gotten 26 episodes of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean. Without giving anything but this fact away, the main arc is now complete, and the way it tied everything together across several seasons with several different protagonists was as heartwarming as it was heartbreaking. The action was amazing, each episode had some intense science or psychology behind it, and there was a lot of great twists. Only problem was that maybe they didn't show the characters enjoying each other's company much and was practically one massive fight after another. I still think it's one of the best endings for any series, and I can't wait to see how the next part is handled. Netflix really killed a lot of the hype for this series by releasing the episodes in binge watchable batches rather than weekly like every other anime, and it was hard to discuss as it was releasing.
Third, Mob Psycho 100 is over after three seasons, and it was way too good. Sure, its ending was surprising and lowkey, but the entire series had a feel-good, slice-of-life aspect from its extreme "Japaneseness" that it felt like the perfect way to end it off. I loved this series and its characters, and think it has some of the greatest animation to have ever gone to screen. It was funny, deeply thoughtful, and well executed.
Fourth, Chainsaw Man is crazy. You'd have no idea what you're getting into based on the first episode, and it gets even wilder and more upsetting as the episodes go on. The author is notorious for ludicrously dark origin stories for his heroes, and this is no different. The manga is still being written, and this adaptation is clearly taking a couple of liberties, but coming from MAPPA, the same studio as Attack on Titan, it feels unique not only in animation, but in every aspect of its delivery, and it's done super well.
I don't have a fifth.
