It’s been a while since I done a review. I’m not a review person because I know I will put you guys to shame. Though this one is going to be a long one

HYPER STREET FIGHTER II : The Anniversary Collection as part of the Capcom: Fighting Collection. I can’t find it on the site so I’m using the mame which I did played quite a lot back in the day, well the PlayStation 2 version and Mame on emulator so

Context:
The game itself is pretty self explanatory. It involves one on one combat, pitting you against the AI or a second player in a best two out of three match. The winner is determined by depleting the opponent’s health bar by K.O or having more health when the timer goes to zero. The six button control is used with a Low/Medium/High Punch and Kick and with a sequence of inputs you can do a “special move” that are unique to each character.
What makes this game different than the other Street Fighter II games is that it’s more so a compilation of the past games into one. For example when you start you have the option to choose from Road Warrior (the original eight), Champion Edition (bosses included) , Turbo, Super (four new playable characters), and Super Turbo (super meter added). Each character have their pros and cons for each iteration of the game like example Sagat is by far the best in Champion or Ken is better in Super, or guile being broke in Champion Edition as well. It really depends on which version is best suited for the character and your playstyle. In total their are 16 different characters with each having a version to their respected appearances on the games making it a total of 64 fighters. 65 if you include the secret character (not saying). Best part is you can fight one another with different versions of characters like example Super Turbo Cammy vs Road Warrior Chun-Li.

Graphics : 8
Using the CPSII arcade this game is quite outdated to be fair with the graphics when it came out in early 2000s. Granted it’s still beautiful to look at and to have the old graphics to their respected versions added was a nice surprise. Nothing too fancy to see here.

Gameplay: 9
Granted I am biased when it comes to fighting games but the gameplay is smooth with little slow down. The controls work wonderfully most of the time and each character each have a specific fighting style and fighting type. Whether be zoning, a grappler, rushdown or the usual shoto. Everyone has a preference and favorite character on this game.

Sound: 8
Sound is pretty good with the hardware is possess but what kind of ticks me is that there’s no CPS I music added to this and all is from the CPS II. From the PlayStation 2 version there is an option to choose between the two but since this is mame (or rather the Capcom Fighting Collection) no option exist. Other than that the music is still memorable with most stages and it displays the personality of each character. Guile with his music feeling more patriotic and perseverance while Sagat has a more unhinged attitude with the off beats if you listen close enough.

Difficulty: 8
This isn’t a game you can walk through easily. Sure first fight or so it may be easy but the game knocks it up a bit where it devours your quarters, well in this case continues. I mean that’s what arcades are for to begin with, right? Devour your money. Sure there are cheap ways to beat opponents but I like to use skills and try to go through the game with little to no continues to see how well I fare against the AI. In the Capcom Fighting Collection you can adjust the difficulty to your liking but I prefer to leave it at the default.

Addictive: 9
If you’re into fighting games of course this game will be enjoyable for hours. Especially against another player. With the magic of online play (capcom fighting collection) it’s been a blast fighting against other players and been getting better at this game every day after each fight. It’s easy to pick up and play yet it takes time to master each character if you want to fine tune your skills

Depth: 5
Other than the fighters each having their own story and different variations there’s not much difference between each iteration other than buffs and nerfs.

Story: 5
Not much of a story to say. World tournament has been announced by Vega (M. Bison in America) and eight fighters (twelve in Super Street fighter II) face off with three mini bosses (playable from Champion edition and forward for a total of sixteen) and M. Bison himself as the final boss. A secret character appears when you face the final boss without any losses. Each character has a unique story from Ryu improving his skills to Chun Li trying to take down M. Bison and so on.

Conclusion:
The game itself is a blast to the past for arcade lovers and fighting enthusiasts/ fans of this game. I highly recommend playing this if you want to experience the game that changed the arcades back in the 90s molded into a huge compilation of what it is the definitive edition back in the 2000s. Ultra Street Fighter II the final Challengers is considered the definitive edition for many but to me this still holds up today as one of the best fighting games to be made, almost close to Marvel vs Capcom 2, tho their both different games to the respective natures of one another. The average rating will be a 7.42 with all the scores I rated but it deserves more than an average rating. An 8 to say the least on this gem

becerra95 : excellent review. I remember both Street Fighter games when they came out. I had Street Fighter II Championship Edition. Then I had Super Street Fighter II the New Challengers. Those games were amazing. Based on your review it seems like this game combines features from both of them. I agree with you it sounds like it is a blast from the past.
