There is a browser based "emulator" called EmulatorJS, which is based on the browser version of RetroArch. It runs great, it supports a few extra systems that the web RetroArch doesn't, and best of all, it supports netplay!

This would mean that just about anyone could create and join multiplayer netplay sessions on Vizzed, no matter what browser or which device you use, and of course you wouldn't have to download or install anything.

What would this mean for Vizzed? Well I'm still testing it out, tweaking it, and writing up a script to make it work with the site's current ecosystem (I successfully got emuserver setup on one of my servers, after many failed attempts). But if all goes well, I would attempt to bring back the seasonal netplay competitions. And I would also bring back the cash prizes for those competitions (since that greatly helps promote participation).

Vizzed Netplay Tournaments ended nearly 2 years ago when the RGR Plugin was discontinued. It is possible to continue using the RGR Plugin (by using an older version of Firefox) and therefore the RGR Plugin's netplay capabilities, but no one does that. Netplay was one of the most exciting features on this site years ago. Playing various retro games with users, and sometimes even streaming them, was one of the most enjoyable things for me personally, and it created some of my most favorite memories on the site. So I'm very excited, and passionate, but bringing Netplay back to the site, and doing whatever I can to make it popular again.

Here's a working netplay test using Super Bomberman 3 for the Super Nintendo
http://vizzed.net/emulatorjs/test.html

If anyone wants to help test it out with me, let me know. To do netplay, you have to hover over the game screen and click the icon that looks like a globe. You'll have to enter in a username to use and then from there, you'll want to either click the room you want to join or create a new one.

I have been able to get it to successfully work. There's a few issues here and there and it's not the greatest at handling de-syncing. I also had issues getting it to work properly on a few devices I tried out, but I at least was successful a few times to have 2 separate devices with separate internet connections to play together with very little lag.

Here's a list of systems that EmulatorJS supports:
-3DO
-Arcade
-Atari 2600
-Atari 7800
-Atari Jaguar
-Atari Lynx
-MSX
-Nintendo NES
-Neo Geo Pocket (and color I believe)
-Nintendo 64
-Nintendo DS (not sure about adding this)
-Game Boy Advance
-Game Boy
-Game Boy Color
-PlayStation
-Super Nintendo
-Sega 32x
-Sega CD
-Sega Game Gear
-Sega Master System
-Sega Genesis
-Sega Saturn
-Turbo Grafx (and CD I believe)
-WonderSwan / Wonderswan Color

All of those systems would be available to play on the site and would also support netplay. Some of those systems we don't currently have available as browser emulators, so they'd be new additions. Additionally, some of those systems never had netplay on this site, so they'd be bringing games to the world of vizzed netplay for the very first time.

So if I'm understanding this post right this sounds a lot easier to get working compared to the RGR and if the seasonal competitions return I'll join some of them again it feels like it's been forever since the last one after all.

SonicOlmstead : Correct, it would be a lot easier to get working.

Would you be interested in helping me test it out at some point?

Great to hear netplay could see a return, and for so many systems!

I'm a bit torn about adding the DS as well, so far the tests I've done on my own with retroarch haven't been extremely successful, but then again I need to try more games and if at all possible try to update both my cores and my build. I think that many people will have with it the same experience I and many others had with Playstation and Dreamcast back in the day, and maybe that's not in our best interest.

I'd personally stage it the following way: first test the netplay on the systems we had already used in the past, then the new additions to netplay and finally the new additions to the site, first for general playing and then netplaying. This way we can bring up an old feature loved by many, then test the possible expansions we never got when it was popular and finally expanding the RGR itself.

I'll have lots of time on me when the next Monday rolls by. Due to timezones I may not be available when most of the others are, but I'm open to participate in the testing in any way I can. I also make an oath to keep my Discord open for as long as I'm on my PC starting in June xD

Davideo7 : It would really depend on when and even then I can't say for sure I'd show up with it being summer and hot out my grandpa loves to start projects without any warning which I am then dragged outside to help with so when I'm free isn't really for sure currently.
