so i was watching law and order, when a suspect get arrested and the detectives say to him here is your chance that you can turn on your boss, if you cooperate does that mean you get less jail time or no jail time or something?

While this might seem like a no brainer there's downsides to it as well. From what I've heard it makes your time in jail/prison much worse and much more dangerous. Inmates don't take kindly to "snitches" and you are more at risk to be assaulted in there if you do this.
