Are you ready for another really bias review? Good cause I'm not either but I'm doing it anyway Mario Kart Double Dash is the game for years I thought was likely to be my favorite game of all time before I played Persona 5 and that was proven wrong but with that being said let's dive into it!
Gameplay 10/10 - The single thing that makes Double Dash stand out so much vs any other Mario Kart is the fact you have 2 racers on a kart and this affects a lot more than you would think. For starters Each character has their own special item only they can get from item boxes so the Mario bros for example have fireballs and Dk and Diddy have a giant banana. Something else that makes this game feel special compared to the other Mario Karts is the control the drift in this game feels really loose and I just love how it feels drifting on courses that you don't have much margin for error on. Double Dash's biggest defining feature is probably the sheer chaos that happens in a Double Dash race compared to if you played a typical race in Mario Kart Wii for example, there can be giant shells bouncing all over the place, giant bananas blocking the way forward, and red shells flung all over the course it's absolute chaos where anything can happen. Graphics 9/10 - Double Dash looks great for a GameCube title and the tracks are vibrant as ever. All the kart designs are nice to look at as well, if I had a complaint I would say the game could of used more karts if anything. Sound 10/10 - Double Dash has an amazing soundtrack it really sells the chaos of the gameplay with it's faster paced tracks still reminds you to stay on your toes for less chaotic tracks. I really adore some of the voice acting in this title my favorite lines that I gotta sneak somewhere in here are Hi I'm Daisy! when you switch over to Daisy and of course who could forget Yeehaw! Hi I'm Daisy! whenever you win a race as Daisy. I also wanna highlight how intimidating Bowser's Castle feels as a song in this game it scared me half to death when I was a kid to race on the track cause it felt like Bowser was after me when the music goes from fun chaos to giving me the feeling of I made a mistake coming here for a friendly go kart race. I can't end this part of the review without talking about how magnificent the theme for Rainbow Road feels in this game it's so upbeat and almost relaxing in a way but I think it works somehow after all the chaos that is Double Dash for the theme to Rainbow Road to feel almost encouraging you to finish the final track. Addictive 10/10 - Double Dash is super replayable just due to how much fun the game is one of my favorite features in this game which I don't believe has returned since is All Cup Tour where you simply race on every track in the Grand Prix and besides the first and last track always being Luigi Circuit and Rainbow Road all the rest are random so sometimes the 2nd track you play could very well be Bowser's Castle. If you have friends and ever get tired of the normal races you can always switch to battle mode featuring Balloon Battle, Shine Thief, and Bob-omb Blast which are all fun ways to mix up the gameplay. Depth 8/10 - I already covered almost everything I wanted to with gameplay but a nice little detail that really helps make the game feel bigger which the designers definitely got from Super Mario Sunshine is that you can often see other tracks in the background and there's far to many examples to even try to start listing it's one of my favorite things about the game. You might wonder if I like Double Dash and what it has to offer so much why isn't Depth rated 10/10? Well something I can't argue for this game over newer titles is that this is the last Mario Kart before Retro Tracks started being a thing so this Mario Kart only has 16 tracks that being said I still think it's the best Difficulty 7/10 - I'm not going to lie and say this difficulty rating doesn't seem right for a Mario Kart title but I swear maybe I've gotten rusty over the years but Double Dash is hard or maybe I'm just unlucky but when playing 150cc I would frequently get destroyed by the CPUs or by my luck which made 100% this game a nightmare some times. Overall 10/10 - Double Dash is perfect chaos and it's just pure fun I highly recommend giving it a shot with friends. My single wish in life is for a sequel to Double Dash or honestly even a Double Dash mode in the next Mario Kart I would have a huge reaction to that and it would make my year if it ever happens.
