i don't know if anyone knows about animals but here it goes, my question is does declawing your pet calm them down? making it less likely to hurt you.

I have a friend whose roommate declawed her cat and I would say yes the cat is less likely to hurt you with claws but the cats teeth are really sharp and actually hurt a bit more in my opinion.

Then again it could be cat to cat on how calm they are. I do know the cat I am thinking of if she likes you she treats your leg like a scratching post so instead of clawing it is just paws rubbing your leg.

It's generally discouraged to declaw your cat because the claws are important tools for a cat to navigate its environment. It's like if somebody cut off your fingers.

Would it make them less aggressive? No, but it would be harder for them to claw you with no claws. They'd definitely still bite though.

Just to clarify, are we talking about cats? If so, is the behavior aggressive like they're attacking or are they kneading you with their paws? I can totally get the not wanting to get clawed by them, but I would also recommend not declawing, because they do have to cut them off at the joint in order to get the whole claw (I hope that doesn't sound preachy like I'm trying to shame you; a lot of people just don't know that, and these are your decisions anyway). A lot of times if they're aggressive, there's a reason behind it and you can rehabilitate the behavior. If you care to elaborate, I could maybe give some tips, but I'm not an expert, just someone who loves cats (I've got two). If they're just kneading you and it hurts (believe me, I get that-ouch), you could try trimming their claws or bringing them in to get trimmed. If it's aggression, though, I wouldn't try trimming them until they're regularly less hostile, though. Some pets are just kinda crazy, and cats can be really hard to understand, especially because we have a primarily dog-loving culture and they're very different. Sorry, that was a long post. Good luck-I hope you solve your problem!
