In the early nineties the video game world was in an all out console war, between the rival upstart Sega, and the name everybody knows, Nintendo it saddens me to think that even as a Nintendo kid in the nineties, Sega currently does not use its other IP's because Sonic is their cash cow but I digress, in 1994, Nintendo had another ace up their sleeve to blindside Sega and it was the biggest game on the super Nintendo if not the biggest game ever at the time, Super Metroid. Its no secret that Metroid is a series that draws a lot of inspiration from the alien films which is why I decided to use the tagline as a parody for this review. Super Metroid is that one game that takes everything you know about the original and improves on it a hundred fold its got a map now which in 1994 compared to the original metroid a godsend but there's plenty more where that came from coming up so lets get into the nitty gritty and dive into the dark ambient and foreboding caverns under the planet Zebes

Level One: Hades: ohhh spoiler alert. The story Super Metroid is not one would expect from Nintendo if you were a kid in the nineties you would be forgiven for thinking it was all sunshine and happy little green dinosaurs and pink blobs that suck things up like a vacuum cleaner but Super Metroid is different, when you pop in the cartridge, your greeted with sinister chords of music combined with the screeching of some unknown creature after seeing the opening words we see a baby metroid in a holding tank and as the camera zooms out, you see the bodies of dead scientists and you realize this is not like any nintendo game you ever played its time to get dark. when you start your adventure we are greeted by something very rare for early nineties video games, an actual voice clip provided by Nintendo employee, Dan Owsen (the man who provided the voice of Fox McCloud in Starfox a year earlier) and we learn that the metroids are nearly all extinct with one remaining. Right after that voice clip we are treated to a prolouge being narrated by a mysterious woman in hi tech armor Samus Aran, previously Samus had lnded on Zebes once before in what is canonically considered her zero mission where she defeated the space pirate leaders Mother Brain, Kraid annd her nemesis Ridley (whose tail looks exactly like a xenomorphs, nice touch Nintendo.) and we are treated to some pretty cool flashbacks from the previous games that have been graphically improved. Samus then recaps on the time she went to the planet SR388, the metroids home planet and destroyed them all including they're queen (you sure this isn't Aliens?)however she left one alive and after hatching imprints on Samus thinking hes its mother. Samus then goes to a research colony to give the baby to the scientists and amazingly found that metroids life draining powers could actually be used for believe it or not the betterment of galactic civilization. After making sure everything was alright, Samus leaves the space colony but soon after gets a distress signal from the colony and immediately goes back to investigate and this is where the adventure begins.when you arrive there is no music, just the ambient sounds of machinesas you make your way through the station you begin to notice that something is off and dreadfully wrong, you enter the room with the scientists but the scientists have all been slaughtered and the baby metroid is missing, the holding tank shattered. Investigating further Samus finds the baby metroid is a small holding container before Samus can rescue the infant metroid, glowing eyes enter and with a terrifying screech, your childhood you is terrified and you get trounced by Ridley. As soon as Ridley escapes, the self destruction sequence begins and you are forced to make a beeline back to the ship. Tracking Ridley to planet Zebes, you find that the further into the caverns you go, you notice some familiar set pieces from the original metroid, like mother brains old chamber with the shattered glass that used to hold her, layered by fog the only life forms seem to be the insects you see on the way down, when you get the first upgrade, the morph ball some creepy light shines on samus with an ominous humming that unnerves you and after getting some more goodies, you find the space pirates have been alerted to your presence. The adventure truly begins at this point.

level Two. The graphics. compared to the graphics of its predecessors, this games graphics are not only beautiful and gorgeous but the backgrounds allow a player to easily navigate rooms they may or may not have been yet and with the map in the corner of the screen this makes navigating so much more easier and you won't get lost (unless your new and a rookie to this game)the graphics have some suberb animation to them too, and the devs that made this game know it, if ya look closely at one boss scene, after you defeat him he dies in a very family unfriendly death as he burns down to his bones (Nintendo, ya know? for kids!) samus has some neat graphical upgrades to her as well the way she moves compared to her original sprite actually looks more natural all in all the graphics are a real beauty.

Level Three, the sound. The ound and music in this game is ambient and mood setting it strays from its fellow nintendo IP's like super mario worlds music (the exception being the ghost house) it seems that the deeper into the planet you go it gets more dreary, depressing and even scary and specia mention goes to lower norfair I, LOVE this tune it just screams pure bad assery and by this point Samus is ready to hand Ridleys tail to him on a silver platter and the fight against mother brain? pure tension i was scared to lose my heart was racing and in the deep seas of Maridea it gives a sense of loneliness and isolation the soundtrack to this game in one word would be masterpiece.

Level Four. Addictive. Being a Metroidvania kind of video game, the addictive natre of Super Metroid blows up the addictive scale honestly you can play this game as many times you like, and still not find everything for me im more of a speed runner for this game i like being able to get the best ending (yeah thats right i like women in bikinis fight me. Haha no fighting I'm messing with ya)all in all if people just wanna ind all the items then you'll definitely be coming back for more to try and beat your personal best.

Level 5 Difficulty. I honestly have nothing much to say about this game being difficult on the one hand if your a new player it will take some getting used to but the more items you get the stronger samus is and if you know what your dong, this game becomes a fun little stroll through Zebes

Level Six the depth: If I talk about the depth, we could be here for a while so I'll do my best to list off the reasons of why the depth of this game is amazing for starters in certain places you'll come to areas you won't be able to access until you have the proper equipment forcing you to back track some of these however are optional but getting them goes towards your item collection percentage score when you beat the game I have beaten this game lots of times and I still haven't found everything this games depth is the selling point of just how super, super metroid is.

closing thoughts: So do i think Super metroid is a good game? Absolutely its a jewel of nineties gaming that arguably holds up to this day and sure some parts are a little dated but it doesn't detract anything from this game Super Metroid is a must have for any gamer if your a kid playing this game, sweet nightmares Arwingstarfighter, signing off, peace out.

Yeah I've seen other Nintendo games that aren't for kids either XD That's really cool that this game has a darker tone to it and really good graphics!
