Have you ever wanted to play a game but you don't have enough space? Did you know that Sony already has the capabilities to make a console with 4TB plus of space? But they won't release it, they're saving it for something special.

That's right, PS4's either have 500 TB or 1 TB of storage that can be upgraded with a hard drive. There are lots of 1 TB and 2 TB internal hard drives and there's even some 4 TB internal ones. Here's the thing, if there are already internal hard drives of that much space, or the capability is there to make one without that much space, how come Sony hasn't done anything with it?.

My theory is that they have. They've taken those 2 TB and higher hard drives and integrated them into systems. But they won't release them. They're going to wait many many years until they release the PS5.

That's how they steal our money. The technology is there to integrate internal hard drives but Sony is going to let us keep spending $60-100 something on bigger 3rd party hard drives and do the installation ourselves. That way when they release a 5 TB original PS5 in 5 to 15 years, it's going to seem like the best thing ever to us.

I feel like there's a flaw in this theory, though. None of the competition has any higher capacity drives in their consoles, either. They could very easily get a leg up on the competition just by offering more storage space in their consoles and charging a premium for it. That might also price them out of the market, though. Sony needs to make sure people are actually gonna have enough money to buy their consoles and while they can put massive storage into their products, larger storage isn't manufactured in the same quantity as smaller drives and there isn't as much demand. They simply wouldn't have the same amount of buying power with large storage as they would with small storage to buy in bulk and make a buck on the turnaround without making their products unaffordable.

Sony's practices have always pissed me off, and this is no different to me. I don't even need it considering you can just free up space by uninstalling games you aren't playing, as far as I know it still keeps the savedata after all.

They need to stop milking the PS4 already, it's gone on long enough if you ask me.

m0ssb3rg935 : Xbox Hard Drives are mostly external and for Switches you can use any microSD so neither could really get a leg up unless they offered more or stop allowing 3rd party stuff, which would either piss people off or cost too much.

I found a 4 TB PS4 hard drive for nearly $150. If Sony starts mass producing those into the system it would be much cheaper for them to make and they can knock down the price a lot. Imagine paying an extra $50 at launch to have a 4 TB PS5 instead of 1 TB. People would be thrilled, but at the same time, Sony is holding that tech back and saving even more.

yoshirulez! : Well the PS5 is nowhere near ready. Honestly I like what they've been doing with models. If they went with a normal lifespan, the PS4 Pro would have literally been the PS5 but there's no reason to build a brand new system and start charging so much more for just a fee graphical advances. So having the PS4 Pro and the XBOX One X is much better than an under performing $600 PS5 and XBOX X1.

Yes, you were able to find a PS4 hard drive...as you said,it was $150. Even if Sony were able to get them in bulk for a much lower price, that would still be a significant price increase for a system that's already competing in terms of price and performance with a more powerful, yet more expensive console and a portable console that plays console-quality games on the go. The fact they haven't done it shows that they don't believe it would be a good business move. That's my two cents on the matter.

NovemberJoy : They aren't getting them in bulk. They're the ones making them. It's not like they make the PS4 and then have someone else make the stuff that goes inside. Think of cars. Back in the day cars were super expensive because not everyone wanted one and they made each one one by one.

Then once they started making lots, it was cheaper and more efficient.

Same with the hard drives. Instead of making a PS4 and a 1 TB hard drive, plus separate hard drives, they'll mass produce systems that havr more powerful hard drives.

The cost of making the system would barely cost more because all they need to buy are thr parts, and then they make it themselves, millions of them.

Also why sell an expensive system and allow someone else to make and sell 3rd party hard drives when you can make them yourselves and raise the price a bit.

Sell a PS4 with a 1 TB drive for $399 and someone else sells a 2 TB drive.

Or make the 2 TB drive yourself and charge like $419.

Sony actually doesn't make the internal hard drive of the PS4, Western Digital does. Same way they don't make their own CPUs or GPUs or many other parts. I do still believe it would be a sizable increase in price if they started putting 4 or 5TB drives into PS4s simply because higher capacity drives are more expensive no matter what kind of bulk you buy them in or how slow they are. (Seriously, Sony? 5400 RPM?)

It would be very cool if they at least added the option for a higher capacity built-in hard drive, but I'm thinking they might still be stinging from how terrible the launch of the PS3 was with its high capacity hard drive (for the time) and even higher price tag. At the same time, I'm wishing the Switch had a model with larger built-in storage or at least an option to change it out for larger storage, but that seems unlikely unless they end up releasing an upgraded model later.

I may not be getting the hard drive as I don't really need it at the moment. But I m not really too happy with how Sony is doing certain thins to people on the ps4 to make problems harder for no reason at all. I hope I don't really run into that problem myself as its something I tend to avoid for one reason or another it will just be a headache to deal with. :/

Hopefully future playstations will still allow you to hook up external hard drives. I have an 8TB hooked up to my ps4 these days.

nakina : Do PS4s not allow you to use external drives for game installations and everything? I could've sworn I read someone saying that's exactly what they did, but I'm not absolutely sure.

dark mode : There are some drives that are up to crazy stuff like 10 or 15 TB, but they're not HDDs, they're SSDs. No magnetic platter on the inside, just clusters of digital storage. Think of it like an SD card on crack with transfer speeds that are literally exponentially higher. They're also pretty darn expensive.

Can the giant ones be used for consoles or are they computer only?

As far as I know, the PS4 will use any 2.5 inch internal SATA drive as long as it's formatted right, and you can format it with the console. I'm not sure what the largest amount of space it can take advantage of is, though. If there's a cap at all, that is. The PS2, for example, will take some pretty big HDDs, but can only make use of something like 8 or 12 GBs and the rest just doesn't get used at all.

Actually reminds me of something else...a PS4 or other console with an SSD would be pretty cool. I guarantee the loading times, install times, and other things would be way better, the only issue at this point would be increased cost and reduced capacity. Maybe they could try a console with an SSD and a hard drive as an experiment, since PCs have been doing it for as long as solid state drives existed. The Switch is the closest to that I've seen with solid-state internal storage, but I'm guessing it probably uses eMMC storage that's got much lower speeds, not to mention the tiny 32GB capacity.

dark mode : Booting up the game, less waiting for it to load once the game has booted up, possibly faster install times...The benefits would be significant, but the extra cost might be an issue too. They might try it with the PS5 and sell it as a feature despite the fact that PCs have been doing it already for quite a while. Either way, I'd be glad to see more movement away from hard drives to solid state storage since it's faster and often more reliable as well.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
