So, I have this conversation every once in a while when people ask me about really popular groups and which songs I like from them and quite often I end up saying I'm not a big fan.... and I'm always a little surprised when people are shocked and sometimes offended that I dislike the group.

I've got a few examples of older groups that this happens with quite a bit and they are the Rolling Stone and the Beatles. I'm not a big fan of either group. I like a few of their songs but there are SO many that I can't stand to listen to. I know people that will go on and on about how great each group and I just don't see it. Maybe at the time they were but that doesn't mean I have to love them.


So, the question here is: what popular bands/singers etc. that everyone seems to love that you don't?

I'm not really that big on any newer music I hear on the radio. Granted, I haven't actually gone and dug through their discographies and it's normally an artists more bland tunes that make it on the radio, but generally speaking, I'm just not into radio music. Particularly the Pop and R&B singers.

21 Pilots is an example. I've only heard a few of their tunes (don't know them by name, so I couldn't tell you which), but it's just not for me.

I"m not big on new music either. There are a few jams that have stuck with me. "Happy" and "Geronimo" to name a few, but so many others just seem so...unenjoyable. I love a wide variety of music, but about the wildest I get is "Bohemian Rhapsody", which to be fair, is pretty insane. But it's also older music.

Its not that I don't like them. I just done care. You could name every rock band ever and I wouldn't know anything about them.

For recent bands it would be guys like Jonas Brothers.

Come to think about it, every Popular Bands out there in the Mainstream today I don't like at all, mostly because today's music is pure garbage (yeah, I sound like an old geezer even for a mid-20's guy), don't get me wrong.

Most of the stuff I like is anything that was made in 2007 or earlier, anything 2008 or later, it's extremely rare, the only new stuff I like is if you never really heard about the band or barely heard about the band..

Today's popular bands cabbageing sucks.

I don't like the Beatles either, and I get so much crap for it lol. My mom's boyfriend gets really annoyed because I refer to them as the most overrated band of all time.

I also don't like modern pop music at all, so people like Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, and Taylor Swift are all immensely popular artists that I can't stand. They aren't "bands" I suppose, but it's the same idea.

As far as rap goes, I'll never understand why Migos, Lil Pump, 6ix9ine, 21 Savage, and Kodak Black are as popular as they are. I don't like them at all.

Oh, I'm really, really not into Radiohead by the way. It's a total miss with me, it always feels pretentious hardly goes anywhere, I feel like you'd probably have to be high to enjoy it.

yoshirulez! : Green Day is a great band, so sorry but we can't talk dang. 

But otherwise, I'm not a big fan of Metallica and I'm really not a fan of Guns N' Roses 

I don't really care for a lot of today's mainstream artists and groups, but here are a few I absolutely don't care for. Sorry if this offends you, but part of what makes this world so beautiful is being able to like, dislike, and appreciate different things. In parenthesis, I will use exclamation marks to illustrate the degree to which I dislike the artist or group, there will be three levels-- (!), (!!), and (!!!). Without further ado:

One Direction (!!)
Ariana Grande (!!!)
Nicki Minaj (!!!)
Pitbull (!!)
Taylor Swift (!!)
Iggy Azalea (!!!)
Meghan Trainor (!)
Miley Cyrus (!!!!!!)
Justin Beiber (!!!!!!!!!!)

and 99.5% of most rap/rappers in general (I don't listen to rap enough to list specific artists, but I don't care for most rap music as a whole).

With the exception of Miley Cyrus, Justin Beiber, and Ariana Grande, I don't dislike the other artists/groups as a person/people, I just don't think they make very good music. There are a few gems among the awful music of today, but I generally prefer older music to the newer stuff, personally.

Barathemos : what about Metallica don't you like? They are one of my favorite bands of all time and I'm curious what it is you don't enjoy. Have you taken the time to listen to a lot of their music because I could recommend some really good songs of theirs. Not trying to change your mind so much as understand why you don't like them. I've got fairly strong opinions about why they are one of the best metal bands from the 80's and 90's. Not a huge fan of their post 2000's stuff.

Also, old green day is good, new green day is meh to me.

SacredShadow : I feel the same way about a lot of new artists. There are songs here and there that I come across that I can enjoy from just about any artist if I go into the song not knowing who is singing it first. Then I form an opinion on the song itself without the baggage of hating the artist already.


Also, a general question - if you know something bad about an artist, does that change your opinion about their music?
