I wanna be able to start downloading games to my switch but it only has like 5 GB of space total. So how do you add more? Are you able to use any SD card or does it have to be a super expensive one that's built specifically for the Switch or Nintendo?

Like Vita memory cards.

You can use any SD Card for the Switch, I have a 64 GB one that I use and it works just fine. If you ever are running out of space a good tip to keep in mind is to delete some screenshots or videos saved on the SD card or system.

Alternatively, if you have Nintendo Switch Online, you can store a game into Cloud if you are running out of space.

Also, try to buy physical games instead of downloading them all. I've been doing that and so far have not had any problems. I have 5 game cartridges and about 4 smaller games downloaded.

Light Knight : most of the time, digital games are like $10-30 cheaper than physical for the Switch. Plus there's so many free switch games (and ones I just take)

zanderlex : Well, if you like to add some more storage, it's best to get the MicroSD card, so you can be able to insert under the stand flap.
My best bet is to try and get either a 64GB or a 128GB MicroSD card if you want to use Digital downloads, because quite a few games can suck a lot of storage space up. But you're going to spend a pretty penny on those MicroSD cards (like us$80 for 64GBs and us$160 for 128GBs), but with the holiday season, they could be a little cheaper

I have found a 16GB one somewhere in my dresser so I'm going to use that one for now. Should be enough for a 2 or 3 small games or one big game like Skyrim I'm guessing.

IgorBird122 :
Lexatom :

Do y'all know what the difference is between a generic MicroSD card and a Switch MicroSD card? I haven't put mine in yet, but after looking at the prices, I'm starting to worry that there might be a big difference between the two. I was at work looking up the prices for a MicroSD card when a customer asked for one and I was surprised at the prices.

We were selling a 128 GB MicroSD from SanDiskfor $40 and it came with an adapter. We were also selling an actual Switch MicroSD. It was also 128 GB and didn't come with an adapter yet it was $60. If they can both be used, how come Nintendo is charging so much more for an item that can be bought from anywhere else for much cheaper?

Any MicroSD card should work with the Switch, I don't know if there even is a difference.

zanderlex :
Lexatom : It more in likely could be because of being a different brand, because different brands would charge different amount. I think it reflects on the quality of the MicroSD card, and how much pre-installed data that is used (because when you buy an 128GB card, you don't get the full 128 GB, probably somewhere between 110 GB to 125 GB, depends on the brand of the MicroSD card you buy).

I have a 128 GB microSDXC that totally covers all of my digital needs. I guess you could get one of those, assuming you don't already have one. I don't know that every microSD works on Switch actually, I'm pretty sure it has to be microSDXC. So keep that in mind while shopping, if you don't already have one yet.

zanderlex : Yeaaah... 16 gigs might not be much, considering AAA games on Switch, if they're digital, can be around 10 gigs. You'd definitely want to find a good deal on a high capacity MicroSDXC.

yoshirulez: My Gamestop was selling the 128 GB for $60. Is that around the right price for one?

One game I really wanted for Switch was Skyrim but I think that was 20 GB and I think the newest basketball game is 30.

zanderlex : I would say probably, I kinda got mine from a friend, but that sounds about right to me. I bet if you waited for some kinda sale it would be better, but if you don't want to wait, that's understandable.

I actually ended up getting a 128GB SDXC card for Christmas and although I haven't put it in yet, I definitely think it should be sufficient for my digital needs. I tend to buy mostly physical games for switch, but it's nice to have the extra space available for digital only games that catch my eye.

Even with physical games only, though, some cartridges require you to download part of the game that didn't fit on the cartridge. An example is Doom, which requires you to download an 8 GB "update" to play the game. Thankfully, unlike Sony, Nintendo doesn't love proprietary memory formats and just uses microSD cards, which also enables a large amount of expansion in the future. Once we start getting them at reasonable prices, you could theoretically put 2 terabytes of storage into your Switch, and that'd be more than enough for almost any player.

NovemberJoy : I'm stuck with a 16 GB sd and I just bought Skyrim.

I know these are way cheaper than say a PS4 hard drive or a Vita memory stick but they're still too expensive for me lol.
