Baseball is America's past time. Still today Baseball is the second most popular sport in baseball slightly behind the NFL. So it should be  no surprise that a lot of baseball games have been made. Sometimes baseball games feature popular stars. In the 1990's one of the games most popular players was Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. SNES released a game called Ken Griffey Jr Presents Major League Baseball. I will be reviewing this game and comparing it to others.

Story: 6

Its the start of the 1994 major league baseball season. The goal is to chose your team and hopefully advance.  Can you guide your team into the postseason? However it will not be easy as other 27 teams have the same goal. (Major League Baseball now has 30 teams, but when this game came out there were only 28). Also chances are your team will have to meet one of the best players of all time Ken Griffey Jr.

Okay the plot here is standard for this type of game. Sports games are not know for their plots.  I think this is a good time to bring up something about this game. Ken Griffey JR and a few others are the only real players in this game. The ballparks, teams and team stats are real but the players names are made up.  The reason for this is MLB did license this game. However the Players Union did not license the players except for Griffey. The other players that are real in this game are not members of the Players Union.  So a lot of players names were changed to avoid legal trouble. You can tell who is who by going on baseball references pages. Other than that, I really like the plot here even if it is lacking in details. I mean come on this is a baseball game and its awesome. I give the story about a 6

Graphics and Controls: 9

The Graphics and Controls are very good in this game. Better than the severely flawed Nolan Ryan baseball game which was not even licensed with MLB. The fans look like actual people. The stadiums look like they do or did in real life. The colors are very amazing. I also like the color of the sky as it can be gray or blue. In addition, the sprites of the players are very well done.  This game was one of the first baseball games to have amazing graphics.  Moreover, the fuzziness that plagued some of the earlier games are gone in this game.

The controls are so much better than the NES and Nolan Ryan SNES baseball games.  Some of the previous baseball games had stiff controls. Others it seemed like the controls changed speeds. Those issues have been pretty much corrected in this game. The game has some very smooth controls. I did not notice a lag or slow down at all. Now what I did notice and I will explain this more under the difficulty section is how your team did in 1993 it is reflected sometimes in the controls. Overall, I give the graphics and controls a 9 out of 10.

Sound: 9

The sound in this game was so much better than earlier baseball games. The fans cheering or booing sound like real fans at a real stadium. I like the sound the ball makes when you get a strike out. Also when you hear the pow sound while batting it lets you know you hit the ball a long way. The announcers voice are amazing and sound like they did in real live.  The late Legendary announcer Joe Buck provides the voice in this game. The Umpires voices are great too. The players have good but comical voices. When a player gets thrown out or struck out they yell come on at the ump. That reminds me of a real baseball games were some players say that to umps. So that was a nice touch to be included in as the sound of this game. Thus, I give the sound a 9 out of 10.

Replay Value: 9

I did not get this game when it first came out in early 1994. The main reason is I did not get a SNES until later in the year for Christmas. So it was a few years later before I got this game. I got it  when it was on clearance. I played this game because it was a baseball game and I like baseball.  I was skeptical of playing this game at first simply because on how bad the Nolan Ryan game was. I was glad I gave this game a chance. I played this game for a while until the Play Station came out along with their mlb line of games. But before the Play Station came out this was one of the top baseball games I had. This is still a fun game to go back and play. I certainly had fun and I still have fun playing this game. I give it a 9 out of 10.

Depth: 5

If the game suffers in anyway its the depth. But the other baseball games just had were you played a few games and that was it. This one offered more such as playing more games and the makers of this game included the Home Run Derby to play in. That was a huge addition when this game came out.  The reason I give the game a middle of the road depth rating are for the following reasons. First of all unlike MLB line for Play Station, you do not have franchise, mode, spring training mode, and other sides games to play in. But unlike earlier baseball games you have more games to play as and you can participate in the home run derby. Not to mention you also have 28 teams to chose to play as. The NES games you had very few teams to play as. So yeah, 5 out of 10 sounds about right for this type of game.

Difficulty: 6

Remember when I said 1993 determines your difficulty? Well that is the case. Your teams stats are based on how they did in 1993. If your chosen team did very good  the game is going to reflect that. Such as your team will be more likely to strike batters out, have good defense and its easier to hit a home run. If your chosen team had a bad year in 1993 that is also reflected in this game. Bad teams typically in this game have slower players, easier to get out, hit into double plays  more, and give up more hits. Teams what were in the middle pretty much have average difficulty.

So be aware  of your team's 1993 stats as the game will reflect on that. A good example is I played as the Rockies and Reds when I played this game. 1993 was Colorado's first year and they were not the best team. The game reflected on that while it was easy to hit home runs, I found myself giving up a lot of home runs as well. This reflects Colorado being an offensive team but having bad pitching. The reds were an average team in 1993 so it was pretty much average.

Its really hard to rate games like this. Simply because unlike games like Mario and Mega Man there are no stages to complete. There are no bosses to battle or hidden areas to find. On the other hand sports games are not always easy. Mainly because they reflect on real life stats like I mentioned. At the end of the day I came up with a 6 out of 10 rating for this type of game. I gave it a 6 because of how the game mimics the 1993 stats for your team or players. Its not a very hard game like Mega Man or other sports games I have played.

Overall: 8.9

As I stated earlier I got this game a few years after it came out. The first baseball game I played was Nolan Ryan's baseball. That game was severely flawed. The main reason was the makers of Nolan Ryans baseball did not even get licensed  from Major League Baseball. Nolan Ryan was not even licensed. Basically they made a game and put a famous/popular player on the box art to sell a game, which was horrible. I was skeptical of playing this game. But since I liked baseball I gave this game a chance and I am glad that I did.

This game has a lot going for it. The graphics is what really makes this game shine. This is the first game that makes it seem like you are looking at a real stadium. The fans look like actual people. In earlier games they were blurred and fuzzy. The sounds in this game are also amazing. Having the players say come on after getting struck out or thrown out is priceless.  I also like it that you can chose from 28 teams this time around. In earlier games you had very few teams to play from and they were not real teams. A lof of the teams were like team C team E and so on and son on. Also you can play more games in this game too. In other games you could only play one maybe two games. The increase in depth was also a bonus. The difficulty is about right in this game

Now, the main issue I have with this game is why did the makers of this game not get the players union to endorse it. Had the makers of this game done that, we would have gotten real life players. Instead we have made up players with the same stats as their real life counterparts. As i mentioned earlier since this game was not licensed by the players union the makers had to make up names to avoid a lawsuit. It can get kind of confusing on who is who. I had to go to baseball reference sites to see whose stats reflect who. To think had they gotten the players union permission it would have saved everyone a lot of trouble. Getting proper license can be done. Play Stations MLB Line and EA Sports baseball games did just that. But oh well this is not really a main issue. I guess it was for me because I am a huge baseball fan.

Overall, I give the game a very solid 8.9 out of 10. I had fun playing this game and its still an all time classic. The main issue I had with this game should not bother anyone. In fact, to a lot of people its probably a minor issue. Everything a good game has this game has such as: good graphics, good sound, good controls, and the right type of difficulty. This is a game that is fun for the entire family young to old. So would I recommend this game? Yes I would recommend this game. This would be a good game to introduce someone who has not played sports games too.  It would also be a great game just to play  and introduce somebody too. Anyway, this concludes my review of this all time classic baseball game. I hope you take time out to enjoy this game. I hope you had fun playing it just like I did.
