If you follow game news, specifically PlayStation news, you're doubtless aware that a lot has been happening lately. In fact this article entered the concept and research phase (albeit with minimal effort, admittedly) a few weeks ago, but every time I intended to start writing it, more big news would surface, and so we're left with an article that covers several topics instead of a simple "look at what just happened!" like was originally intended.

But enough of that -- on to the news.

PS3 and PS Vita get the PS+ axe

As you almost certainly know already (I really should have written this as soon as it was announced), it's been officially announced that starting next February, PlayStation Plus monthly games will no longer support PS3 or PS Vita. This is honestly something that we all knew was coming, but we just didn't know when.

The reasons were not stated, but with the PS4 turning five years old soon, do we really need to be given a reason as to why last generation's systems will no longer be supported with new "free" games every month? It was pretty generous to let it go this long honestly, especially when you look at how the other big game system companies support their older systems.

The blow of this news was eased by the announcement that two of the most criticality acclaimed PS4 games ever were being given out as a PS+ benefit this month ー Bloodborne and Ratchet and Clank. Though to be honest, I didn't find the other systems' games for the month to be too shabby either.

For more information on this, see the PlayStation blog.

PlayStation Restructures
PlayStation has been riding a wave of success since the release of PS4. It's seemed that they couldn't do any wrong, and if they did, it wasn't a serious misstep and was quickly righted by the many good things they did with their games.

It came as a surprise then, when PlayStation announced that they were making notable changes and restructuring internally. They claimed that they were making adjustments that would help them to make and focus on more first party content, which is saying a lot considering the sheer amount of critically acclaimed first party titles that they've enjoyed thus far this generation. That isn't to imply that their games have been better than anyone else's ーthat is a matter of opinionー but rather that they've consistently put out some of the most beloved, praised, and anticipated content gaming has seen in recent years. Their competitors have put out some critically acclaimed content as well, but this article is about PlayStation specifically.

This isn't the only surprise with PlayStation's internal affairs however. Over the past several months we've seen Andrew House retire and be replaced, major changes announced in some of their hallmark first party content, such as the removal of certain microtransactions that had been a part of earlier entries (which was a welcome announcement in light of the fear of the new leadership's intentions regarding their business model), and more. Perhaps these changes are why the restructuring was thought necessary.

A brief overview of this news can be found on SIE's site. Note that this site is far from covering the full announcement and explanation.

Spyro returns?
It isn't official yet, but it might as well be at this point. After the success of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Activision announced plans to remake more of their older IPs, especially those that were around during the time of the first PlayStation.

What better to follow Crash then, than Spyro? It isn't all based on the above information alone though. Recently a privately owned Spyro the Dragon Twitter account was rumored to have been bought, and it's name was changed to Falcon McBob. According to PlayStation Lifestyle "Attempting to reset the password on the [Falcon McBob Twitter] account shows an email of sp***@a*********.*** which is a perfect fit for spyro@activision.com."

It was also recently found that the Spyro the Dragon demo in the original Crash game was left intact.

It could then be taken as a good or bad sign that, also according to PlayStation Lifestyle, Activision currently has a voice over project codenamed Falcon, and while they coupled this with the fact that McBob could be a reference to Toys For Bob (a company name you're familiar with if you play Skylanders games) to suggest that a proper Spyro title could be released soon.
However someone with a little more realism or perhaps more pessimism, could easily look at this as a reference to nothing more than a new Skylanders game with a renewed focus on Spyro, or simply an attempt to reclaim the Twitter handle of Spyro. We can dream, but let's keep it a dream instead of an expectation. I would expect an announcement at E3 this year if indeed a Spyro remake is happening however.

And then there was Crash
It was reported fairly recently that licensing manager Max Arguile of EB Games said that Activision is planning to release a new Crash Bandicoot game in 2019, and even claimed that they're developing plans to continue making new Crash games for the next five years. The credibility of this claim is strengthened by the fact that this same information stated that the N. Sane Trilogy was coming to PC and Nintendo Switch, prior to the official announcement. If then, the latter was correct, it stands to reason that the former is as well. The only question now is: what do they mean by "new"? Is this a brand new Crash game, or another remake (being new in the sense that it is a new remake and not just a port of the trilogy or a special edition).

Personally I'm still hoping for a remake of Crash Team Racing, Crash Nitro Kart, or Crash Bash, or even a new title based on one of these spin offs. Who knows what will happen though?

MediEvil returns
It's hardly news, having been announced back in December at PSX, but for those who don't follow said events, MediEvil the classic Action/Adventure game from the era of the PSX (the first PlayStation console, not the game show in December. Drat you and your early naming conventions, Sony). It starred a skeleton and.... honestly that's all I knew, so I started to look up some information. However it came to my attention that this game had amassed quite a following and was very well received, so I'll not insult any fans by attempting to explain.

At any rate, it seems that now is a great time to be a fan of classic games, or for that matter, games in general.

So what are your thoughts on this craziness? Will PS+ be adding more AAA games to it's PS4 lineup after it ends PS3 and PS Vita support?
Will the PlayStation restructure increase first party games by focusing less on third party relations (let's hope not)?
Will we see a Spyro trilogy (currently rumored to be the Treasure Trove trilogy)?
Will Crash be getting more games?
Should this end with fewer questions (yes)?

As always, thanks for reading.

I'd love to see brand new Crash games, specially spin-offs like the ones you mention. Sony has already been releasing several party games that could set the grounds for a brand new Crash Bash, and it's always a good time to release a fantasy racing game to follow up CNK and CTTR.

Spyro could use a remaster, it was very famous in times of the PSX and it could see even greater success than Crash. I never actually played any of its games, but I do feel like Sony needs to resuscitate their old "mascots" because their current ones aren't anything over the top right now. Same goes for MediEvil, and the same goes for some other franchises not yet mentioned (Bushido Blade being the most notorious and most remembered of them all).

About the restructure, Sony won't ditch third-party relations. Sony has almost always focused on bringing the best playing experience, and they surely want to reach the biggest number of games possible to showcase their superiority over their rivals. Also, focusing too much on first-party games was a greatly discussed strategy by the Nintendo fanbase not too long ago, despite having an immense pool of acclaimed first-party franchises, so in the case of Sony it would be a big mistake because they don't have that many first-party franchises that could support their fanbase. Not even a return of old legends would justify such a move.

You know, to be honest I've kind of been drawn away from PlayStation actually. I've seen it as kind of a "Call of Duty" machine (Or other games of that nature) as of late. I know people are going to say that it has many great game (Like final fantasy XV) but a lot of those games I can get on PC for probably much cheaper. However, what you have posted here gives me hope for what is to come. High quality (hopefully) exclusive games!

Don't get me wrong, I do own a PS4 but I haven't really bought a game for it in a REALLY long time. (It's not sitting collecting dust, my brother plays it frequently).

If anyone has any recommendations for exclusive PS4 games let me know! I am a big RPG buff.

jizlilz21 : Yeah the Final Fantasy 7 remake was announced at E3 2015 I believe, but there's still no release date. People are hoping that it's one of the games that Square Enix was referring to when they said they would be revealing release dates for several big games this year. I mean, it doesn't get much bigger than Final Fantasy 7, right?

EX Palen : I think Aloy has potential to be a huge PlayStation icon actually. Horizon: Zero Dawn was a massive success, and it's follow up DLC was loved as well, so I think we may very well see her again. However they did recently retire Nathan Drake, so it wouldn't hurt to see revivals of some older characters. Unfortunately I doubt any new Crash or Spyro games --remakes or otherwise-- will be PlayStation exclusive. MediEvil would almost have to be I think, but not the others. And a Bushido Blade or Bushido Blade 2 remake or remaster, or even a Bushido Blade 3 would be a dream come true. lol

See and that's what I'm thinking too. In fact the tremendous focus on third party relations is what made the PS4 what it is today. I just won't be completely comfortable until I see for sure that the man who replaced Andrew House (can't remember who it was. It wasn't Shawn Lauden, was it?) Is going to know how to lead it right. Andrew House was there for PSX and PS2 which dominated, he left before PS3 which ended up making some serious missteps and causing the console race to be very unstable, and it was the only PlayStation console not to run away with the competition, then he came back for PS4 and we see how that went. I'm unsure of what to expect now that he's gone. If it was Shawn Layden that replaced him though, I have no doubts that it'll be fine.

MoblinGardens : To be completely honest, I only play on PlayStation, so I'm not entirely sure which games are third party exclusives. I do know that PSN's "only on PlayStation" list turns up something like 175 results, but Idk how many are RPGs, or even good.

A quick list of good RPGs that I know of on PS4 (Though not sure how many are exclusive)
•Horizon: Zero Dawn. I'm sure you've heard of that one though.

•The Tales of series (Tales of Zestiria, Tales of Berseria) are typically quality Action JRPGs. I haven't played any of the ones on PS4 despite owning one (I have a big backlog) but I've heard good things about them. As an added bonus, if your brother likes them, they support multiplayer.

•The Atelier games. I only have one, but it's an incredible game. It's a turn based JRPG with a heavy emphasis on crafting (synthesizing) and planning. Trust me, if you like games that make you think about attributes, traits, balancing, and battle planning, this will not disappoint. However if you just want to play a more straight forward JRPG, then you don't have to get that far into the synthesizing system. It's still complex, but the hours of researching and careful combining aren't necessary just to win either.

•Dragon Quest Builders. This one started out as a PlayStation exclusive (just look at the thousands of boxes that say "only on PlayStation" for proof) before Square Enix decided that they didn't want to be honest and ported it, but Idk if the first one is on PC or just PS4 and Nintendo Switch. The second is coming to PC, but you should play this one first -- I haven't played 2, but this is a masterpiece that you don't want to miss. It's a world builder (like MineCraft, but much much better imo. I hated MineCraft) and Action JRPG rolled into one.

•Nioh. This one is an extremely difficult Action JRPG. I've yet to get my hands on it, but I hear it's incredible, and it looks like fun.

•Sword Art Online: Re: Hollow Fragment. Idk if you're a fan of the show or not, but this game is amazing. If you like the show, or are even neutral on it, this is something I highly recommend. It's actually two games in one (Infinity Monent, and Hollow Fragment). The battle mechanics are complex, but once you get the hang of them they begin to feel like second nature, and they easily made for my favorite action RPG battle mechanics of all time. Or really my favorite battle mechanics of any genre.
There's a PC port of this coming (Or it may have released over the past couple of weeks) but it's been on PS4 for a few years I believe, so it's definitely there now. Also it has a ton of free DLC on PSN, and the multiplayer still works so let me know if you get it and want to try some multiplayer! Only early in the morning though because my connection is too slow the rest of the day. lol
There are other SAO games that are PlayStation exclusives, namely Lost Song and Hollow Realization, but this is the one to start with imo. Fatal Bullet is out now too, but it's not PlayStation exclusive.

There are more, especially since PS4 is home to most of the JRPGs that have been released this generation, but I don't know a lot about many of them. I can list a few more by name, but can't speak to their quality or content.
Tokyo Xanadu EX+, .Hack//G.U., Akiba's Beat, Exist Archive (I believe the subtitle is the Other Side of The Sky, but I'm not sure. Anyway, you die before the gameplay even begins, so that's a thing lol), Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth -- Hacker's Memory, Blue Reflection, and a few others that I won't mention because I don't exactly appreciate the content in them, but they're there. lol There are also a few JRPGs still on the list of upcoming PS4 games too, so definitely take a look around.

Oh, and here's a link of what are supposed to be PlayStation exclusive games, but I saw a few that I recognized that weren't exclusives, so don't take it as a definitive source for information.
