Hi, guys.  This is my first review of Tecmo Super Bowl (for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System), the sequel to the masterpiece that is Tecmo Bowl.  This game ALSO spawned 2 sequels on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System AND the Sega Genesis, Tecmo Super Bowl II and Tecmo Super Bowl III.  I love this game (just like the Nintendo Entertainment System version and the Sega Genesis version).   Now, Tecmo's a company who made the Ninja Gaiden series, the Bomb Jack series and a whole slew of other platformers and sports games I won't get into because it would take too long (including the Tecmo Bowl series).  Now, I actually have the cartridge of this game (from a mom and pop video game store that I won't get into because it's pointless to do so in this review) and I can say one thing: this game is awesome!  I'll give you multiple reasons why you should play this game.

- It has 28 teams (remember, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version and the Sega Genesis versions of Tecmo Super Bowl came out in 1993 and while there may be football games such as Madden NFL 97 who have "secret teams", remember that this is 1993).  Those teams are: the Atlanta Falcons, the Buffalo Bills, the Chicago Bears, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Cleveland Browns , the Dallas Cowboys (they were considered the best team in american in the early to mid-late 90's, winning five Super Bowls in the NFL in their entire career), the Denver Broncos (another good team back in the 90's), the Detroit Lions, the Green Bay Packers, the Houston Oilers, the Indianapolis Colts, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Los Angeles Raiders, the Los Angeles Rams, the Miami Dolphins, the Minnesota Vikings, the New England Patriots, the New Orleans Saints, the New York Giants, the New York Jets, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Phoenix Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the San Diego Chargers, the San Francisco 49ers, the Seattle Seahawks, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Washington Redskins.   (It may not have had EVERY NFL team from 1993, but it sure has a LOT of them).  (No, I wasn't that much a fan of the NFL).

- The teams play differently (they have different stats and stuff).  Even players have different stats.  (No, I looked at the LA Raiders line up and there's no Bo Jackson in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System of Tecmo Super Bowl).  (I don't know whether he exists in the Sega Genesis version of Tecmo Super Bowl; I'm thinking, "probably not").

- The controls are simple to learn, easy to master.

- The Artificial Intelligence (or A.I. If you prefer) increases in difficulty the closer you get to the Super Bowl.  This game isn't too easy, but not too hard either.  (It's just the right amount).

- It has the three modes from the NES version (and a LOT of options).  Here they are.

First is the SEASON MODE where everybody's probably familiar with this MODE. (The SUB-MODES in this mode are: 1991 SEASON MODE, 1992 SEASON MODE, 1993 SEASON MODE and 3 YEARS MODE (where it makes you play through the 1991, 1992 AND 1993 SEASONS CONSECUTIVELY)).   (Here's the funny thing: there's yet another SUB-MODE where you can select AUTO SKIP (which lets you skip to Week 17 at the most), SELECT SCHEDULE (of which the 1991, 1992, 1993 SEASON MODES and the 3 YEARS MODE can be selected), PLAYOFFS (which lets you see the AFC AND NFC PLAYOFFS) and RESET (which resets the schedule entirely).  Then there's the TEAM CONTROL mode (of which you can assign the team to CPU, COA (meaning coach) or MAN (meaning that YOU would take over the team ENTIRELY), the SCHEDULE MODE (this lets you assign the game to 1991 SEASON MODE, 1992 SEASON MODE, 1993 SEASON MODE or 3 YEARS MODE), the GAME START MODE (pretty self-explanatory here), the NFL STANDINGS option (which lets you how your favorite (or hated) player is doing), the TEAM RANKINGS option (which lets you see how your favorite (or hated) team is doing), the NFL LEADERS option (again, pretty self-explanatory) and the TEAM DATA option (which lets you see ANY player's condition AND their stats).

Second is the PRESEASON MODE of which TWO teams go at it and have fun.   (Although, I will say, being able to adjust the time in the PRESEASON MODE is awesome; you can go from 3 minutes to 15 minutes).

The third (and final) mode is PRO BOWL, which is the AFC and the NFC going at it and having fun (just like PRESEASON MODE).   (Also, in the PRESEASON MODE AND THE PRO BOWL MODE, there are six options you can choose from; MAN VS COM, MAN VS MAN, MAN VS COA, COA VS COM, COA VS COA, and COM VS COM (which is pretty self-explanatory)).

- It has a TON of depth (just like the other Tecmo Super Bowl games in the Tecmo Bowl franchise).   You can change plays (in the middle of the game, no less), do ALL sorts of stuff and whatever else you can think of.  With 28 teams, three MODES and a lot of options, there's no way I would rate this game's depth lower than a 10.  You also have an offense and a defense mode.  On offense, you have EIGHT plays PLUS a NINTH play (which is a last-ditch maneuver) and they can be adjusted (with the exception of the NINTH one) at any time if you're having trouble with this game.  The EIGHT plays are split into FOUR passing plays and FOUR running plays.  The passing plays are B + Up, B + Down, B + Left and B + Right.  The passing plays CAN be a bit risky (because of the fact that you may get intercepted or have an incomplete pass, not to mention you can get sacked), but they can pay off if you do it correctly.   The running plays are A + Up, A + Down, A + Left and A + Right.  The running plays are generally safer than the passing plays because of the fact that you CAN'T get intercepted (although you CAN fumble the ball, which I will explain later on in this review).   The NINTH play is done by pressing X (although I don't USUALLY use this play, unless I'm in REAL trouble; it can also be blocked as well).   To pass, you press B twice (after you've selected a passing play and after you've selected your receiver).  To select your receiver press A (but don't take too much time).   On defense, you have to guess which of the plays the offense is picking.   Guess right, and the defense will blitz the offense QUICKLY (resulting in the quarterback MOST LIKELY getting sacked).   Guess wrong, and the offense will USUALLY have a receiver open. It's a 1 in 8 chance of whether you're going to get it right or not (on defense).    In both defense and offense, you can call up a menu by pressing Y.  The options on offense are: TIMEOUT (of you which CAN call a TIMEOUT by pressing A), PUNT KICK (pretty self-explanatory here), FIELD GOAL (again, pretty self-explanatory here), CHANGE (changes ANY player at any time in the game, including players which can kick off but will probably get injured for doing so), PLAY BOOK (changes the play to whatever you want at any time in the game) and CANCEL (which is self-explanatory).   The options on defense are half of what they are on offense (specifically, the TIMEOUT, CHANGE and CANCEL options are on defense).  Both the offense and the defense have 3 TIMEOUTS (which you CAN call at any time in the game) per half (which the game replenishes ALL 3 TIMEOUTS at the start of the third quarter).  Also, some teams are really good at passing and some are really good at running.  To be honest, I am not going into detail of every play in the playbook; this review's already detailed enough as it is.  Now, I said that you CAN fumble, right?  Well, yes you can.  The stats on your player (specifically the BALL CONTROL stat) and a host of other stats determine whether you fumble or not.  If you do fumble, well, it's unfortunate (but understandable).   You can also get injured (at which that's the point that the game FORCES you to change players, for OBVIOUS reasons).   Again, the condition of your players determines whether your player is in danger of getting injured or not.  Also, I didn't explain this, but there are conditions (which are GOOD, EXCELLENT (you want this condition), AVERAGE, BAD (your player's in danger of getting injured) and INJURED (self-explanatory)).  If your player's injured, you'll have to wait for a few weeks before he's allowed to play again.   A SAFETY, an INTERCEPTION, a TOUCHDOWN and a TOUCHBACK are pretty self-explanatory.  I'm not going into too much detail about the stats of the players (Tecmo even provided them for you which you can check up on at any time), because it's self-explanatory.   Also, you change the weather to CLEAR, RAINY or SNOWY (this doesn't have ANY actual affect on the game, though)   With 28 teams AND a lot of options PLUS simple and easy options, I would rate the depth a 10.

- It is very addicting (just like Tetris).  Seriously, who doesn't like the simple to learn, easy to master controls?    This is an easy 10.

- The controls, like I said, are simple and fun (and easy to learn).   They're not super confusing, or anything like that.

- The difficulty is not too hard, nor too easy (it's just right).  (One trick I know that DOES make it a little bit easier (if you're having trouble, that is) is to Zig-Zag like your life depended on it.  This confuses the CPU enough to where you can get a 25 to 50 yard pass most of the time.  (I've seen some videos where players ACTUALLY managed to get from one end zone to the other end zone, which IS pretty impressive).  (Sometimes I can do that).

- The graphics are really nice for 1993 standards.  There are cut-scenes during the game (one of which has a CLOWN actually falling on his bottom)!  I was laughing out loud when that happened!  That's so funny!    Needless to say, I was impressed.

- The music and sound are really awesome for 1993 standards.  They're the Nintendo Entertainment System soundtracks (from the Nintendo Entertainment System game Tecmo Super Bowl), but in Super Nintendo Entertainment System form).

- The story isn't relevant, because there is no story!   It's just you taking one of the 28 teams to the Super Bowl!

- This and the Sega Genesis of Tecmo Super Bowl are the same game-play wise, so I will not review the Sega Genesis version of Tecmo Super Bowl.

Well, there you have it.   You have a lot of reasons to play Tecmo Super Bowl on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System AND the Sega Genesis (AND the game's sequels too)!   Now, I don't care whether you buy the game or emulate it (like I said in the beginning of this review I got it from a mom and pop video game store), but play this game.

I guess I should have made my review easier to read, to be honest.

Not a bad review for a new member. Well done, and you covered each section. Some sectiosn could be a little more in detail, but otherwise, a very good review. Keep it up.
