Overgrowth is an action-platformer game created by Wolfire Games and was released on October 16th 2017. Overgrowth is the sequel to the 2005 action game Lugaru. NOTE: This game contains gore and is not for the faint hearted Gameplay Overgrowths gameplay is simple to use, hard to master. In Overgrowth and Lugaru rather than clicking to do fighting combos you hold the action button and use direction keys to fight! Overgrowth combat is dependant on your characters stance and direction. Overgrowths combat is really unique and is smooth and fluid. So is its platformer sections! Overgrowth is also built around parkour and the games parkour is very very smooth and fluid. Much like Lugaru there were many platformer sections but Overgrowth takes them up a whole lot. In overgrowth you have your standard Jump and Climb obstacles, but you also have your Wall-run obstacles! (Which wasn't in Lugaru) and whats great is that you can incorporate these parkour in combat! So you can wall-run and jump off and then do a power kick and send the enemy flying. There are also multiple modes too. You have 3 stories. Wolfire/Overgrowth campagin, Lugaru Campaign and Therium 2 campaign. You also have the arena and 2 player modes! Arena is your standard survival--like mode you know see how long you can survive and such. You have a Arena isn't anything special. Unless you do something special which I will touch on later. Now the stories are quite cool actually. I will cover that later though. I do wanna talk about a few more unique things. Unlike most games (and its predecessor) Overgrowth doesn't use regular health mechanics. Overgrowth's health system is Skeletal based - This is what makes the combat you unique, you can hit a sweet spot on an enemy to take them out easier. It doesn't only apply to the enemies; It applies to you too. So if you flip while you are about to hit the ground at a fast speed, you're dead. That also fits into weapon play - weapons in this game is really great just like the combat! the controls really don't change that much but the gameplay changes alot. With the weapons you can easily kill enemies; but thats not the fun part - the fun part is where you fight the enemies, you can really feel the hits like you're using it. When you block it feels like you're blocking it mainly thats on the sound design but the swordplay is so satisfying. The slices look real the game feels great. Well, most of the combat sounds kinda hard? but the thing is Overgrowth offers different play styles (Like MGSV) you dont have to run up all the time, you could sneak your way through or stealth kill your way through by slicing and snapping necks! You can pick and choose which one you want when you want! Its not too bad! Now, I cant talk about gameplay without mentioning the workshop. The Overgrowth workshop is really amazing, its actually good like it makes up a majority of the game and when I say that I don't mean that the base content offered isn't good enough or that it isn't enough but its for people who have beaten all 3 stories. You have some well made mods such as. Yeah, Overgrowths community makes the best things especially the new modded arenas. Oh my GOD, those are the best. And you know what else? Overgrowth offers 2 Player support! Yeah! 2 player versus! Unfortunately you cant do co-op (Atleast I don't know any way to). You have a collection of mods. From characters to levels its just really good. And by characters I mean characters The entire gameplay of Overgrowth is really great. I love it so much. It offers alot too. Gameplay/Depth/Addictiveness - 8/9/9 Stories Now as mentioned before Overgrowth offers 3 stories. 1 of which is a fan campaign (fanpaign). Im gonna try my hardest to not spoil anything but if you want you can skip this section. Story 1 - Overgrowth Overgrowth's story follows a Rabbit named Turner, who is a war veteran who is fighting to stop his race from being enslaved by Wolves,Rats and other races. Turner Immediately gets into trouble as soon as he arrives onto the new island of White Flags after the events of Lugaru. Upon arriving in White Flags he is met with a group who raided the village to take slaves with them. Turner chases them down and sets the story of the game. Overgrowth's story I feel was really really good. It was a nice story, and even had some nice twists too. The only complaint is that it had a cliffhanger just like Lugaru, and I wouldn't mind if I didn't have to wait a decade to find out what happened to Turner. This story seems to be an allegory for Racism and it kinda falls flat on that front but you can enjoy it without looking on that aspect. The characters you meet during the story are really cool and Overgrowth also has a really great backstory to everything. There are comics which explain most of the things that happened in the universe and why things are the way they are now. Story 2 - Lugaru The prequel to Overgrowth - Lugaru follows Turner who is fighting for revenge after his village is raided and his family and friends are killed in the raid. Lugaru's story is really great and also has unique backstory. And has a nice twist and technically 2 endings. There are complaints though, like how Overgrowths Lugaru campaign remaster changes ALOT of plot points. Like the main enemy is Story 3 - Therium 2 The fan campaign and Sequel Therium, Therium 2 follows YOU as you were suddenly taken to prison and framed for crimes you never committed. You need to get back to home by any means necessary. But along the way you uncover the secrets of Preuwyn and find more characters who help and hinder you along the way. Therium 2's story is AMAZING. And Its lore is very deep - Therium 2 is a really ambitious and long fan campaign. Infact the developers even enjoyed it so much that it is now included within Overgrowth's installation! And is the largest and longest fan campaign in Overgrowth's history. Now it comes with complaints aswell. The beginning tutorial seems useless because most users would have already beaten or started Overgrowth's original story, so they would have already played the tutorial. But thats not the only big part - the next issue is that the area is really large and doesn't give you the directions you need. And sometimes (Like the original Overgrowth story) the levels are really huge and incorporate lots of enemies which could be a problem. And I have heard complaints on the length of the story (40+ levels) but the story length isn't an issue when the universe of Therium is a vast one. But Therium 2's story was the most enjoyable and you would most likley be playing this one after you have beaten both stories. Overgrowth has 3 stories which are great and fun on their own, the length of the entire game (all stories) would be about 8-10 hours. Story 1 - 5-6 hours Story 2 - 20-30 minutes Story 3 - 4-5 hours These stories are diverse and have alot of lore behind them so for that the stories get their own rating. Story 1 - 7/10 Story 2 - 7.5/10 Story 3 - 8/10 Sound/Graphics The sounds for this game are PERFECT. The cracks, The smacks, The cuts, The Gush! They feel so great to hear! Hearing the snap of a neck as you kick it feels great! Even the Sound producer made a video on how he made the sound effects! They feel so natural! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEWC82lRRZ8 As for the graphics. The graphics are beautiful. For a game that was in development for 8+ years the Phoenix engine makes things look great! And for the gore. OH THE GORE! The visuals and sound design are TOP NOTCH! Sound/Graphics - 9/10 Overgrowth is a really great game, especially since it was in development for nearly 10 years. The gameplay is fluid, the community is great. Developers are active and are supportive! Should you buy Overgrowth? YES! Overgrowth is a Must buy for anyone who is a fan of parkour and action - Get this game and support its developers! What a strange looking game to me, lagomorph combat. I like that you broke up the story into sections and rated each one, that was a new approach I've not seen before! I like that you broke up the story into sections and rated each one, that was a new approach I've not seen before! |
