At what age is it appropriate to play GTA V? I just bought it off of Steam, and I'm 13. I'm going to skip the strip club and prostitutes, though.

It's all different for each person really, you'd be surprised at how many people your age have played it.

Just because it's rated M doesn't mean you have to br 17 to play it. It's just like a rated R movie, anyone can see it as long as an adult is there, so technically if the family is okay with it, it's fair game.

I remember being like 12 or 13 and buying GTA 3 and my mom was in the store so they sold it to me.

According to the ratings, it's recommended that you're at least 17 to play the game. But like, no one's gonna arrest you for playing GTA V when you're just 16 X'D.

My feelings is that as long as you're ready for the content of the game, you should be able to play it. And that age changes from person to person, and if it's later that's not necessarily a bad thing xp.

So uh, I hope you're ready and that you have fun with the game :p

I'm with most of the other people that have posted here: if you are mature enough, then you can play it. If you understand the difference between real life, and video games, then you're ok. And, as long as you are under your parents roof, and they are okay with it, then it's fine.

Age can be as misleading as a number on a scale when you're weighing yourself. Nine times out of ten, age really doesn't have anything to do with degree of development. A great example of this is the fact that I know several people that are in their 30s and 40s who can't handle their alcohol when I also know of at least a few people who aren't even legally adults yet that are much more mature about drinking.

I think the question should have been what age should a child use cell phones and the internet. They can discover far worse things on there then in any GTA video game.

a better question is why buy it, it is only fun if you like shooting, killing, and sometimes grind for money to get fun stuff. i think you're not understanding what GTAV is because when you first play the game you do not get anything, think of it has level 1 in any mmo game. So again why place it when you need to spend 100+ hours to get something.

I started playing GTA games when I was 10 years old, and I didn't turn into a mass murdering psychopath because I was raised right.

I don't think there's really a "right" age to play it. It depends entirely on the maturity of the player in question, and their ability to separate fiction and reality.

If someone cannot separate the two things, they should not play those games, it is that simple.

I do admit, I first started playing GTA around 2003-2004 (the first one being GTA III) and I was 10 at the time, but even playing at a young age, that didn't turn me into a crazy lunatic, shooting everyone everywhere while drinking, smoking, and driving crazy around town picking up women (if I did, I would be one messed up kid).

But personally, age doesn't really matter, it all depends on how "mature" the gamer is... Their physical age could be like 24, but his mental age could be like 12, or their physical age could be like 10, but their mental age could be like 22.

And to everyone that complains about kids buying these violent video game, I got something to say that I always say... "If you can't see that letter/number on the bottom right, then why are you even buying that game then?"

But by law, it's 16, 17, or 18.. Depends on the video gaming rating region you live in.

Well I think it varies. I mean I started playing violent video games at a real young age, but I was taught to never imitate what I was playing. I was in grade school when I first played Mortal Kombat, also around this time I was watching horror movies, pro wrestling, etc. My parents were pretty cool with all of this, as long as I didn't act stupid. With that being said. I think 13 to 14 would be an ok age, granted they want you to be 17 or older, but as long as a kid that age understands what is real and what is not real, and have parents that actually parent, things should be ok. Then again, compared to when I was a kid, and to now, things are different. I was born in 1988, I grew up in the 90's, and a lot of things were ok then, that aren't now, especially in gaming.

Just so we're all clear here, no one has a problem that a game where you pick random items to torture a person is 'entertainment' as long as you know it's not real life?

Is that ... is it me or is that just f*****d up?  That's considered 'fun,' torturing someone in a video game?

Well it's a video game. It's entertainment right? Are you saying we shouldn't have violent video games? I mean I get it, 13 year olds probably shouldn't be playing the games, but at that age I played some very violent games, and never once did I feel the need to reinact what I seen in the game. I was taught, especially at an earlier age, that it was just a video game, it's not real, and the words of my own parents "don't be a dumbass" lol.

That said, I think what he was getting at was that perceiving simulated torture as fun is messed up, rather than the game itself. So "It's a video game. It's entertainment, right?" while a valid opinion, isn't addressing the question he raised. The question isn't "isn't it messed up that this is entertainment?", but rather "isn't it messed up that people actually find this 'entertainment software' to actually be entertaining?"

Again, I don't mean you or anyone else any disrespect. Just clarifying what was said.


As for the question posed by Ghostbear:

It's also messed up that a game where being a serial killer, or hiring prostitutes and then killing them after the fact can be considered an acceptable approach to the gameplay, can be the best selling piece of entertainment in historical records. But that's me. To be fair though, not everyone plays it that way, in fact no one here said they did, so no disrespect intended by this. I just don't understand why we would support a game that does allow for this kind of stuff.
My five and seven year old nephews are, unfortunately, allowed to play this at home. Trust me when I say that some of the things that came out of their mouths about "fun" after playing this were truly saddening, especially given what good kids they've always been.



To Fancdew -- I would personally say that this is one of the few games that I would say the age rating should be followed with a fair amount of strictness. Typically age ratings are more indicators of how mature you need to be, and what kind of stuff you need to be able to handle, than they are how old you should be.
