LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga Review by: Zlinqx - 8.2/10

Legoify your life
So my original plan was to not do any more reviews this week as I'm working on another review which is taking a while (mainly because I have to complete the game I'm reviewing) and I want to make sure that I'll get it out as early as possible next week.

However despite that I still wanted to give you guys something to read in the meantime (like someone actually reads all my reviews... hehehe).

So I decided to take the easy route and review one of the games I've spent the most time playing during my childhood and still occasionally do today, namely Lego Star Wars 2 for the PS2... Well it would be if I didn't eventually switch to an Xbox 360 and got the updated Lego Star Wars the Complete Saga which consists of Lego Star Wars 1 and 2 made into one game along with some extra additions.

So let's ge- Alright you know what? I'm not saying it again it's getting too repetitive.

Graphics: 8

This was the thing I found the hardest to rate really. The characters and objects in the game as you might expect are made out of legos which are in 3d environments. Characters and objects that are made out of Lego look very good, pretty much looking exactly like they would in real life. The animations are done well too, often looking surprisingly realistic. The environments themselves do the job fairly well though I do think they sometimes are slightly lacking in detail and the game did also ocassionally have some camera issues. A cool thing in the game though is building objects. Like in all the Lego games you might come across Lego pieces (not to be confused with the Lego studs that are used as a sort of currency in the game which we'll get into later). These Lego pieces can then be built into objects (which pretty much just means holding down the b button) which will give you studs and might be of use to you or simply be there for show and while it isn't as fun as building stuff in real life, it's still fun to see things just go from a few Lego pieces to finished constructs in a matter of seconds not to mention that sometimes you don't really know what it'll become when it's done. It's nothing huge but it's still something you're going to be doing a lot of and it adds some nice detail to the game. The graphics have also aged fairly well which can probably also be largely due to the Lego style of the game.

Sound: 10

The game uses many tracks from the movies and while they do seem a bit dramatic combined with the overall mood of the game they still fit very well. There's also an astounding amount of sound effects in this game more so then many other games and they usually fit very well into the game though you'd think they would get repetitive after a while but they didn't for me and I'd say that's a pretty cool achievement for any game. Not to mention the voice acting was spot on as well (yes that is me being sarcastic since the characters don't talk at all unless you count the occasional grunting or mumbling).

Story: 8

Well the game doesn't have too much of a narrative as the story pretty much consists of 3 cutscenes during each stage as well as an ending cutscene when you beat all the stages of one movie and the classic wall of text which will appear at the start of every stage summarizing what has happened from the end of the previous stage up until then. Nothing too in depth but it does the job. So why did I rate it a 9? Well the game did have something which managed to win me over, the humour. It's pretty goofy and although the game is probably aimed at more younger audiences most of the time, it did still have me chuckling a lot. One of the things I found the game did well was that it often made fun of itself and took advantage of the fact that the characters and objects were made out of legos or the fact that the characters couldn't speak which would normally be seen as a restriction in this case. This was shown both in cutscenes but also in the levels themselves having some pretty funny easter eggs and details that often have nothing at all to do with the movie itself. (like the fact that I stumbled across some storm troopers relaxing in a hot tub wearing nothing but their helmets and underwear or when I suddenly started playing some music on tatooine and the orcs went from trying to kill me to showing off how their dancing skills). I feel this adds a kind of nice charm to the game that also makes me want to explore more and see what else I can find or wanting to see what will happen in the next cutscene despite having seen the movies before. Simply put I feel like the game wouldn't be the same without it. They could've just gone the lazy route and just try to imitate the movie somewhat and leave it at that but they instead add their own twist to it which makes it feel that more entertaining to me.

Difficulty: 5

The game is easy. I mean as in you literally can't die kind of easy. If you happen to lose all your hearts at some point in a level (and of course you're going to at some point) all that happens is that you lose a few of your studs that you've collected and then you just respawn where you died like nothing happened. I feel like it's a bit too easy but luckily the combat isn't really the focus of the game. Instead you'll mainly be exploring the levels finding collectibles, seeing what easter eggs and hidden areas you can find and just plainly messing around with it. The game does also feature quite a few puzzles which are usually fairly easy as well (though still probably harder then the extremely easy combat). So hearing this you'd wonder why I'd still rate it as high as a 5? Well the difficulty if there is any comes in 100% completing the game. Replaying levels is mainly what you'll be doing for most of the time and just due to the sheer amount of collectibles, finding all the secrets in a level becomes the main challenge. Some aren't that hard to find but others might be near impossible without a guide unless you stumble on to them by complete accident from pretty much wrecking every single object in sight. Not to mention that without spoiling too much finding enough collectibles might in turn lead you to unlock other things...

Addictiveness: 7

So you'd think that by how I'm treating this game so far I just completely love it. Well here we get to the in my opinion biggest downfall with the? game, the combat. The combat is extremely basic as in it pretty much only consists of jumping and mashing one button along with the occasional flashy/funny animation to go along with it. It will get repetitive very fast. And as if that wasn't enough you can't actually die making the game feel a tad bit too easy. Making it more of a bother then anything when you're trying to 100% complete the levels and don't want to lose your studs. With that said the combat isn't really the main focus of the game. You'll be doing a lot of it especially when playing through the story mode but you'll eventually revisit levels in freeplay mode where you can switch freely between a wide variety of different characters opening up many more options in terms of exploration (and to some degree combat with the different types of characters) especially with the huge amount of areas, collectibles and other things they cram into each level that can often only be accessed in the aforementioned freeplay mode. And the combat is not always that bad, sure it does get repetitive and is often extremely easy but can still offer some enjoyment when just messing around with it (which you might be doing a lot) and it's still not the worst I've seen (there's also some missions where you fly around in a ship and those offer some nice variety preventing the regular combat from getting as dull and the combat in those missions also feels a lot more enjoyable). With that said you're still going to be spending a lot of time fighting especially when you first start out as you have to play through the story mode (which doesn't have nearly as much exploring) to unlock freeplay mode which means it will get dull fast (though the story mode isn't all bad as it does try to mix things up a bit from time to time)... Oh well at least it has those goofy cutscenes... I also feel the game is suited better for casual 1 to 2 hour bursts instead of playing it for several hours in a row to prevent the combat from feeling as repetitive. Getting past this and the combat however, this game can still be a lot of fun. Especially as coming back to it after playing other games or doing other things entirely can still make it feel fairly fresh again. And as a last note this game can be played with a friend featuring a drop in drop out sort of multiplayer as a friend can pretty much join you at any time when playing solo and then leave and you'll still be able to play on your own. I think this adds a nice sort of ease of play and it can often be a lot more enjoyable to play with a friend. You'll have to share the same screen since there is no split screen but most of the time that wont be too much of a problem. New to the complete saga is that you can also play through the game online with a friend however I haven't tried it and I think this game is a lot more fun when you play it with someone in person.

Depth: 9

Completing the story mode wont take very long at all, I did so in just around 6 hours and I honestly think that's for the better considering it's the freeplay mode is what makes the game a lot more fun. Not to mention that while the story mode is fairly short and usually wont take too long the wealth of things to do in freeplay mode as well as some other things that can be unlocked is astounding (score attack and bonus levels to name a few), and there's added replay value if you play through it with a friend which can also help make things a lot more fun. Like previously mentioned I also think that the game for the most part is fun in shorter bursts which makes this a good game to play when you get bored for an hour or 2 and then come back again to later. So with this you could probably sink 30 hours or so into it along with the ocassional re visit when playing through with a friend or just messing around a bit when you're bored.

Overall: 8.3

This is a great game to play casually from time to time while trying to 100% complete it (saying casual and 100%complete in one sentence sounds weird but whatever) I'd also recommend playing with a friend as I think the game is a lot more fun doing so. So who would I recommend this game to? In short anyone really though if you haven't seen the star wars films I'd recommend doing so as it can otherwise spoil some pretty major plot points and it'll generally be more fun if you have seen them. And an advice for those who decide to pick it up
DO NOT USE GUIDES UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECCESARY. Sorry about the caps but I felt they were absolutely neccesary.

Wow, this ended up becoming my longest review so far (actually quite surprisingly so) but I felt it was neccesary as this game (or Lego games in general) is pretty unique in their play style. I also thought that this was hard game to review despite having played a lot of it so that might have contributed to why it ended up becoming so long.

So please tell me what you think of this review, if you agree or not, what you think I did right and things I can improve on until my next review.
And please rate it as well (and rate them fairly as always as I don't want to be lured into thinking that my reviews are good or bad if they're not).

And with that I hope you'll read my next review.

Also some random summons of people who may or may not be interested (if you aren't just ignore this).

Used to have this game, now I have it again. I love it. Only thing is that now I have to start over after being at like 60% complete. -_- If you want to play it, let me know.
