TOEJAM AND EARL PANIC ON FUNKATRONToejam and Earl on the Megadrive is and underrated little gem of a game, and a game that holds a lot of memories for me and one I spent a serious amount on when I was but a wee little nipper it just was so much fun either on your own or with 2 players. So I will get down to the main part of my review hope you enjoy.
Right I will start of with the story, after escapades in seriously un cool earth the hip and happening Toejam and Earl manage to get there ship repaired and headed towards there home planet of funkatron. Unfourtunaly for our hapless duo unknown to them they had some clinger ons in the way of earthlings. Once they got back these pesky earthlings started to cause panic and mayhem, form bad singing, destruction and general mis-treatment of funkatron's inhabitants. Things got so bad the funkapotamas has decided to go into hiding and it is he the lord majesty of funk that is the source of the funk in funkatron. With this is where our adventure starts, and it is up too Toejam and Earl to clear out all the earthlings bring out the funkapotamas from hiding and restore the funky way of life in funkatron.
Graphics: they are a big fat ten. Seriously they are great, from the bold bright well drawn out charters, to the detailed backgrounds and the wonderful cartoon like animation with little things going on in them it just so much fun to look at and the variety of the aliens in the game is staggering I think this is one of the best looking games on the 16 bit era. Other little animations like being possed by a ghost cow , being tickled by the boogeyman and being kicked by the little girl all add to the fun to the game.
Sound what can I say wonderful a firm ten, not really my cup of tea but the music really suits the mood and the atmosphere of the game well. A great mix of funk, hip hop, RNB and rap and smooth lay ed back beats, a soundtrack that needs to be turned up when being played you will want to dance along to the soundtrack while playing the game wonderful. Sound effects are wonderfully cartoon like and the sampled speech of some of the earthlings catchphrases is very well done.
Depth: There is loads for a 16 bit era game, there are loads of secrets to find, in the way of doors, paths, presents and lairs. You can spend an absolute age on a single level just trying to find everything and there is loads to find. Plus there are a few good mini games as well like the bouncy fungus, the hyper funk zone, and the rap in time game where they have to press the right buttons with the right timing witch is very good fun. Also the main game itself is large 18 levels, plus there are 2 endings so providing a fair bit of replay value.
Addictiveness: To me a very addictive game because of the overall package of the game, I played through this game at least 7 times just trying to unearth all the little secrets hidden paths and try and just get everything the game has to offer. Plus trying to get the good ending as to the addictiveness.
Difficulty: Starts of pretty easy then later on get pretty hard but saying that there are a lot of power up in the with do make the game very manageable and definitely easier in 2 player mode but still provides a decent challenge.
So there is my review hop you like it please try the game and enjoy it.
