Meh on, meh off   bsnowotter
Karate Kid is a 2d, sidescrolling beat-em-up (plus minigame collection) which rips off quite faithfully the look and basic move set of the classic arcade/NES game Kung Fu and adds crane kick and drum punch special moves for good measure.
Completing this game is a brief affair involving a low level of challenge.  After a brief Karate tourney representing the end of the first Karate Kid film, Daniel San, over the course of 3 levels (2 if you count the next two as basically the same area) recreates some of his experiences from Karate Kid 2 and kicks butt in Okinawa.  After copying the look of Kung Fu's main character and creating a basic foe for Daniel with the same move set, the creators of Karate Kid said "we're done" and did not bother ripping off any of the other interesting foes, there is one variant of the bad guy who charges with a spear, sometimes bad guys throw potted plants, and there are struggling birds and twig obstacles in the typhoon level.  At the end of each stage is a boss character who is the same as the normal bad guys but takes more hits to defeat and is accompanied by a repetitive, somewhat menacing tune.
To make the game feel more like an authentic movie tie-in, your girlfriend and Mr. Miyagi sometimes show up at designated points in the levels.  If you jump up and touch them, they disappear and you get a boost of life!
More successful at making the game feel like a good movie tie-in are the minigames, which are brief, optional and quite fun (while repetitive).  It is good fun to dodge the swinging hammer, to feel like a bad-butt (family-friendly please!) while karate-chopping blocks of ice into nothingness (test your might!!), and perhaps most entertainingly to catch flies in chopsticks (tons of flies in rapid succession?!!!?  impossible!).  These mini games are well made, feature good graphics and make you feel like you are actively practicing Miyagi's teachings.  I would have liked to see even more of these, perhaps a paint the fence, sand the floor or wax the cars minigame.  These games are available if Daniel enters houses during the course of the game and if you do well you are awarded with more crane kick and drum punch ammunition.
The music is dull but functionally dramatic.  The sound effects are good, adding to the satisfaction of beating up people.  Addiction-wise I did not award super high marks as there is no replay value, variety or depth, though I think most moderately patient gamers who give the game a try may be tempted to play it to the end, it does not take very long and minimal frustration stands in the way of the experience.
To be fair to this mediocre move tie-in game, by choosing to be on the easy/non-frustrating side and by recreating some scenes and drama from the films, it quite admirably provided some fun back in the day to kids wanting to kick butt karate style on the NES.  In retrospect however it definitely earns a "meh" for lacking the ambition and imagination to create a deeper and more interesting game.  Those looking for a greater challenge could beat this game as a warm up and then try your luck at "Kung Fu" in the Mame or Nes section!
P.S. I just beat it in about 10 minutes!  I rule.

The KARATE KID   rebelyell
GRAPHICS: I gave the graphics a 5. They could have been better. With in the mini games they are good but during the bulk of the game. They are below par even for the Nintendo days.
SOUND: The sound was just bad and I forced myself to give it a 3. But by level 2 I had the sound off and was listening to Howard stern. I didn't hear one song from the movie which you think they would but at least one in.
ADDICTIVENESS: Well this was pretty low as well a3. I played it about three times and just got bored which is sad as I'm a big fan of all the movies. I just felt the game was rushed and made just to make money.
STORY: If you seen the movie the story is great. But besides a couple of place's in the levels They didn't show one clip from the film. And missed out on a lot of game plots. It seemed like the just said everyone has seen the movie no reason to go in to detail about it.
DEPTH Again it's a low one 3  The only fun is the few mini  games they have. Which are more fun then the game it self. But they where so far and in between that it couldn't save this game.
DIFFICULTY:  This was the only high number I gave the game a 9. It's hard do to the flaws of the game and not the play. Enemy's fall in place's where you can't get to them. The controls are hard a jumping is forget about it.  It's feels like it's more of luck then skill.
My thoughts are they just rushed this game. I had hoped it would have been better. They put all there eggs in one basket in the hopes that the movie would sale the game for them.

LJN you've done it again   UFC
They just can't leave any franchise alone can they. The Karate Kid is one of the most frustrating games ever made. I'd say who programmed this broken ass game but I already know the culprit is once again LJN. Otherwise known for the factory that produces nothing but horrible games. This game stinks so bad manure would be offended to be within 10 feet of it. This is one of those sort of sidescroller beat em up games but that's not entirely accurate but it doesn't matter because this game has no accuracy itself. There's only 4 levels in this game. The first level is this karate tournament, it's simple enough but when you get to the final you begin to realise how broken the face to face combat is. If you try and kick or punch someone it's 50/50 if you are gonna get hit first and lose a third of your lifebar.
The 2nd level starts the sidescrolling and this is where you realise how bad the controls and game is. There's a million ninjas or ?cronies after you and they can hit you from any angle but you have to be specific for them. If you pick up these weird little c letters you can your life back and if you touch a floating person who i think is mr miyagi and sometimes some girl you get your life mostly back. You'll need every bit of health to get through these levels. Oh and if you get caught between two cronies consider it an unavoidable death because the bastards punch you back and forth without reply like a damn beach ball. If you are lucky in between stages you can get to bonus stages for more points and health i guess, i've only gotten to this weird chop ice with your hand segment twice. The third stage is like superman for the commodore 64 level 3's get hit and fly back terrible feature mixed between ninja gaiden 2's stage hazards on level 2 where you get blown back. You get hit by a flying object or bird you fly back and this is incredibly annoying and means it takes forever to get by. ?You are also getting blown back so if you are trying to jump over a little pit you will most likely fall to your death. Oh and to jump you press up not A like a good game would program. This makes it very hard to jump across anything while directing where you want to jump. You only start with 3 lives too so if you die 3 times it's back to the damn start which is not even close to being fair. When you get to the end of the levels you fight somewhat of a boss but really it's just more henchman you can kill.
Now for the fourth and thankfully final stage. On this one we have the worst enemies and landscape of the game. How do you like using broken jump controls to constantly go up and down mountains while enemies chase and hit you from below and come at you from above. Getting caught between people is very easy in this level too and it's usually instant death. To make matters worse there are boulders on the ground you have to dodge as well. And the worst part about the stage is the henchman with the spears, you have to attack them for above or below or else you will just get poked to death you cant attack him from head on. My best advice to beat this level and game is to simply just run away from every enemy when you get the chance. But is that you want to do in a karate Kid game? Am I playing as Daniel San or as Lester the unlikely ? The final boss is just some orange shirt henchman you have to kill after beating a few henchman but you can't let the lady fall off the ledge either. And for all that you get a lousy ending by Mr Miyagi saying you are now martial arts master even though I have been studying martial arts for years and I never have had to go through random enemies with spears and boulders and birds hitting me back 100 feet.
Overall this game is really bad but because it's so short and there are ways around the many flaws to make it quick i'll be super lenient and give it a 3.5, if you see a LJN logo on a cart chances are you've got a plastic turd.

Just your typical run of the mill brawler.   RedHotToddy
Ah karate kid, It was another awesome movie from the 80's, It had action, excitement, and adventure, so how could you turn all of this into an NES game? Oh well, you guys are about to see how LJN managed to mess up one of the greatest film trilogies of all time! This is the karate kid for the NES.
Story-5/10
The main story behind this one is really not that much excited about! It has very very little to do with the movie, just kidding! the plot of this game is that you must guide our hero Daniel laRusso through 4 big challenging (Hmm I may of over-exaggerated that) levels in order to get to the karate tournament finals, This is his toughest challenge yet, so you will have to work very hard to get Daniel to the finals, or the job is all blown to pieces if you are not at the control!
Gameplay-5/10
The karate kid for the NES is just your typical brawler, You control Daniel larusso as you get from the beginning of the level to the end without getting torn down, Standing in his way are just your typical double dragon like enemies, Thugs, bullies, etc. The first problem I have with this game is the hit detection! You can't hit an enemy without getting hit by them first! Like say I am trying to hit spike over there, I try to hit him first but he manages to hit me without giving me anytime to react at all! It is unfair beyond relief, But anyways, the controls are pretty simple, The D-pad lets you move, A punches, B kicks, and something you might notice, In order to jump, you must press up on the D-pad! They could've just made A the jump button, And B the main attack button, But no, After all, the game is made by LJN! In between levels, you must do some sort of weird bonus stages, one has you catching flies with a chopstick, one has you trying to hit and dodge this log, and so on. Daniel does not jump high enough, which means if you are trapped in a sea of enemies, jumping won't help because you will just lose more health then usual! Anyways, that is it for the gameplay, I guess that is all that I can say about it! It is just your average beat'em'up...
Graphics-5/10
The graphics are pretty darn plain and simple for an NES game! Daniel looks like your simple little kid with karate gear and bandanna, The enemies you will be beating up look like your typical bullies, and oh god, that picture of Daniel's karate teacher at the end of the game! It really scared me the first time I played this game, I did not play the game for another 2 weeks or so, and that is alot if you ask me! As for the actual levels and their design, it is pretty lacking if you ask me, Most times when playing a level I just grew bored of the same stuff in the background looping over and over again until the level was over! The HUD is pretty self explanatory, it shows you how many times you can use these so called special moves, your amount of health left until you die and lose a life, and your score as an entirety, These are the kind of games where I can understand why they put a scoring system in the first place, because there is quite alot of "Beep" to destroy! Just like what? Every single beat'em'up ever made?
Sound-6/10
The sound in karate kid is very and I say VERY bland, It is so bland you will forget that there is music playing in the first place! First thing you get when you boot up the game is some very Chinese sounding music, and It is all here from there, Each level you will be exploring has very forgettable music that sounds so generic, so paint by numbers, that you will instantly want to mute your TV the second you hear it! As for the sound effects, they are there, but they are hardly noticeable because the very loud music, but here are some of them, You get your punch, you get your little sounds when you are getting trashed by a sea of enemies, and whenever you die you hear some sort of weird "Do do dun dun dun" noise upon your death! I swear, you will hear that sound over and over and over and over until you lose all of your lives and have to start the whole entire game over from the start! BTW, I got to hand it to you guys LJN! The music in this game sounds very mega-man esque! Nice touch! Especially considering that mega-man is way better then this game will ever be!
Addictiveness-5/10
To be completely fair, the game just doesn't offer that much for you to come back through after your long hard quest! I remembered leaving this one alone for quite a long time because I didn't find any reason so to come back and start playing it again! No, the only reason why I ever play this game again is to break my high score for each playthrough! My current high-score is 356,789 points, That is quite alot if you ask me, but anyways, that is pretty much it for the addictive factor.
Depth-3/10
This is really disappointing to say the least, this is probably one of THE shortest NES games I have ever played in a while!  This game is only a whooping 4 levels long! So chances are you can beat this game in about 5-10 minutes, I expected way better and longer, but oh well, It is LJN! Remember that!
Difficulty-8/10
This is definitely one of the more harder NES games I have played in a while! Most times in each level you just want to finish the level as soon as possible, but there is no way that can happen because all these freaking bullies are coming out of nowhere not letting you progress any farther! You will die and die and die and die and die! I know, it is really possible to say that this game is too broken and unplayable to be recommended to anyone!
Overall-5.4/10
If I were you, I would seriously rent this one before you decide to buy it for reals! I gave this game a 5.4 because the game itself is too broken and unplayable to even be reccomended to any huge diehard karate kid fan! Anyways, this has been RedHotToddy, and I am signing off! See you guys tomorrow, I don't think I can make it to 100 reviews this week because school is coming up, But I will see what I can do!

The Karate Kid Video Game   luigi25
The Karate Kid was a classic movie released in 1984 that I got into watching a few years back. I also enjoyed watching one of the sequels to that movie called: "The Karate Kid Part 2" which came out 2 years later in 1986. Not long after Part 2, LJN decided to make a video game off of this second Karate Kid film. The game was simply titled: "The Karate Kid", and it was an adventure/fighting style of game where Daniel Larusso went to Okinawa. He encounters "Chozen" who was the main villain in Karate Kid 2, and he fights his way through Chozen's thugs and a typhoon. I thought this game sucked! Plain and simple! The gameplay was boring and hard, the plot was just a bad version of the second movie, and The Karate Kid on NES was so forgettable!!
Graphics 6/10: The graphics are typical for those of an early NES game. You can't expect much here, but The Karate Kid is not a good looking game at all! It isn't completely horrible, but it's just another one of those bland/boring looking NES games from the mid to late '80s. The sprites look stupid looking, but the backgrounds aren't that bad. LJN did put a little bit of effort into making the game look sort of appealing, but they just couldn't do much with what they had to work with at the time. This was before the better looking NES classics like: Super Mario Bros. 3 or Kirby's Adventure. The Karate Kid video game came out in the days of: Legend of Zelda and Metroid, so it wasn't going to be a very attractive game.
Music 9/10: The music in The Karate Kid is one of the things I like about it. It sounds very much like the tracks in Karate Kid 1 and 2. I really liked the Far East theme for many of the numbers in this game. The bonus stages sound pretty cool and so does the title track. I don't think the soundtrack is absolutely flawless or amazing, but it is the only thing I like about this game. There are no songs that sound boring in the NES game. LJN took the Asian style of music from the Mr. Miyagi training montages and tried to put them into this game, and they pretty much succeeded at that. It isn't as good as the music from the first two films, but it comes pretty close.
Gameplay 0/10: This has to be the weakest part of the LJN version of The Karate Kid. The player controls Daniel Larusso as he punches and kicks his way through 4 very difficult levels. What I really hate about this game is the way you have to push the Up button in order to jump. WHY? This is something I can never get used to. Fortunately, Daniel does have a health meter, and he can grab health along the way. Although, he has only 3 lives to get through the game with and no continues. This is just a badly designed game all around, and I'm not done yet!! THERE'S STILL MORE!! This is a very short game, but let's talk about how ridiculous and dumb these levels are.
The thugs and stage hazards are impossible to avoid getting hit by. Not only that, but you'll constantly die from falling in the water. The control always seems to feel off. You can't hit an enemy without them hitting you first and knocking you backwards, usually into the ocean where Daniel dies!! The typhoon level is where I always get a Game Over and have to start again and again and again!! THIS BECOMES NOTHING MORE THAN AN ENDLESS LOOP!! I GET TIRED OF THIS GAME REAL QUICK, AND THERE IS ALMOST NO REPLAY VALUE TO IT AT ALL!! There isn't much to say about the gameplay of The Karate Kid on NES. Daniel just punches and kicks his way through Okinawa, but occasionally he'll enter a door and have to play a bonus stage. OH BOY!! HOW EXCITING!!!
WHAT IS THE POINT OF THESE THINGS!!?? IT'S NOT LIKE DANIEL GETS EXTRA LIVES, CONTINUES, OR HEALTH IF HE WINS!! HE JUST GETS EXTRA POINTS!!!! THIS IS JUST CORNY AND DUMB!! THE BONUSES ARE POINTLESS!!! I always find myself accidently entering one and having to play it when I don't want to!! The worst one is the swinging hammer!!! OMG! What would Mr. Miyagi say about this!! Unfortunately, he was still around to see this game, I just hope he never had to play it!! Especially these bonus stages!!! Daniel gets to: Break the Ice, Catch a Fly with Chopsticks, and Dodge the Swinging Hammer. If he wins he gets extra points! MIYAGI WOULD GIVE THESE BONUS STAGES (AND THE GAMEPLAY ITSELF) A BIG THUMBS DOWN!!!
Story 8/10: This game takes place in Okinawa just like in Karate Kid Part 2. Daniel starts out fighting in a karate tournament just like in the first movie, then he goes to Okinawa to save Kumiko from Chozen and his gang of thugs. He encounters: Mr. Miyagi, Sato, and the girl who got trapped on the pole during the typhoon along the way, and they give Daniel extra health. In some ways, this plot IS a rip-off of the second movie, but I do kind of like it. I said earlier that this was one of the weaker points to this game, but after writing about it, I feel a little different. It does do a pretty good job of bringing the events of Karate Kid 1 and 2 to a video game. It isn't original at all, but it isn't all that bad either.
Content 0/10: The Karate Kid on NES is a joke as far as content goes! It only has 4 stages, and the game can be beat in under 10 minutes if you are some kind of Nintendo expert or have a really good cheat system. For me, I usually just end up playing 2 or 3 of the levels over and over again in an endless loop. Even after level 3, the game doesn't offer anything else. There is only one last level where Daniel goes to the festival and saves Kumiko from Chozen on the bridge just like in KK2. The ending is pretty stupid too! It basically copies the ending from the first two movies where Miyagi smiles and winks at Daniel and tells him: "Congratulations Daniel-San!"
Difficulty 10/10: Of course you would expect me to rate the difficulty to the Karate Kid a 10 out of 10. It is impossible! Daniel never can land a punch or kick on many of the enemies without them hitting him first or by being hit by some kind of flying object that knocks him into the water killing him! Level 3 is the worst one with the wind blowing you around, and you have to dodge all this flying debris. Daniel will always fall in the ocean and die on this stage because he has to try to jump this bridge that has basically fell apart. You have impossible platforming, enemies that gang up on, and you can't defend yourself, etc. This game has terrible difficulty! Even if you cheat, you can't beat it!
Overall 4.6/10: The Karate Kid game is not the worst game I have ever played. The music and storyline are pretty cool, but everything else about it stinks! The game almost has no content, and it does not have any re-playability to it at all! The difficulty is WAY TOO MUCH!! I hate having to use the Up button to jump. I also have trouble trying to jump these difficult sections while fighting Chozen's gang all during a typhoon! You'll always get knocked into the ocean on this part. LJN failed to make a good video game out of one of the greatest movies from the 1980s. Even though this isn't the worst game out there, I still give it a pretty low score.
