Slaughter or this game? I'll pick slaughter.   NovemberJoy
Slaughter Sport. The worst fighting game on the Genesis, hands down, and possibly the worst fighting game. I don't see how anyone can play this game and truly enjoy it. How does the game stack up?
Graphics:Laziness is apparent.
The graphics aren't good in any way for the Genesis. Though they would be fine for NES standards, this game is severely lacking in the graphics department. The best done graphics are the "cutscenes" that appear every few fights, or if you lose a fight. Most of the graphical work in these scenes goes into detailing the Fatman's flab, and it is disgusting.
-Lazy graphic design
-Only real detail goes into something that really doesn't need it
Music/SFX:You can call this music?
The music is also very lazy. None of the tunes are really catchy, and the one track that seems to sound decent, suddenly makes an ear-piercing noise that makes you wish you didn't have ears. The sound effects are just your average stock sound effects, except made worse.
-Bad music
-Generic sound effects made worse
Addictiveness:If you can get addicted to this game, then you need to reconsider your taste in entertainment.
This game is awful, and you need to be administered good fighting games immediately if you find yourself becoming addicted to this. There are literally no redeeming qualities in this game that could ever get you addicted to it.
-Absolutely no redeeming qualities to get you addicted
Story:What story?
The game doesn't even have a plot in-game, it's only in the instruction manual. I think that the plot is that you are this guy named Rex, and you're trying to defeat the Fatman(aka Mondu the Fat) in the Fight Palace. Needless to say, this isn't Shakespeare.
-Pointless, unexplained story
Gameplay:Not fun, unless you're a masochist.
Absolutely nothing about the gameplay is fun or fair. I'll explain.
So, the controls are broken, even on a responsive emulator. If you press the button too lightly, you won't complete your punch, because you'll stop mid-punch. If you hold the button down or push it too hard, you'll do the beginning frames of your punch over and over again. Neither of these hit your opponent, so you need to press it just right, or you won't punch correctly. But, you really don't want to punch, anyway. The only decent move you get is the jump kick. Just keep jump-kicking your opponent when you get the chance, and you'll defeat some of them easily.
However, this brings me to the next problem:The computer cheats. All of the other characters will spam their most powerful moves, take advantage of having more range than you do, and generally will beat you down quickly. Unless you spam the jump-kick! That's right, the AI is broken enough that it will just keep jumping into range, so you can keep attacking them with it. Did I mention it's the most powerful move in your arsenal and it knocks your enemy down with one hit? However, some of the enemies will thwart you in your attempts to jump-kick them, which makes them by far the hardest enemies in the game. These are the enemies that fly. Yes, you read that right, fly. The enemies seem to have every possible advantage over you, in the abilities department(at least, almost all of them).
But, you can purchase MAGIC ITEMS! Gasp! That makes the fights TOTALLY even! No, actually, it doesn't. Instead, it makes it even worse. Most of the items are absolutely useless. Oil slick? AI just jumps over it. Disable their jumping? They'll walk up to you and beat you down. Get the ability to do a one-hit kill? The AI will make sure you never get a chance to use it. In fact, there's supposedly one item that can hit YOU. Yes, there's an item that can BACKFIRE. Brilliant design, Razor Soft. Just brilliant.
So, there are codes to play as different characters. Thing is, most of the characters are only useful in the AI's hands. The lady with twice your range and height? Has the most unresponsive jump-kick in gaming, ever. The final boss? Can't even jump-kick. This makes them virtually useless.
Oh, and did I mention that if you lose 3 fights, you have to start the game ALL OVER AGAIN? That's just great in a game that makes you fight about 17 enemies.
The game has a shop system, but the only things you can buy are magic items(of which only a few are useful), health, and attack power. That's right, this game isn't even nice enough to replenish your health between each fight. In fact, with every hit you deal, YOUR ATTACK POWER GOES DOWN. That has to be the most retarded idea I've ever seen in a fighting game.
Depth:About as much depth as a plate.
There isn't much depth to speak of, at all. There's the shop system and the codes, but other than that, there's nothing that distinguishes this one from every other fighting game.
Difficulty:Fluctuates between really, really hard and really, really easy.
This game even manages to mess up the difficulty. The chick with the bad jump-kick is really easy to beat, but comes after a first opponent that is ridiculously hard, by first opponent standards. It gets worse from there.
Overall Rating:Never play this. It's not worth the Viz you would spend on it.
Buy, Rent, or Skip: Don't just skip it, destroy any copy of it you find. Except for Davideo7's copy, that is.
