Mortal Kombat - that's combat with a K!   geeogree
Mortal Kombat is a 2D fighting game developed in the early 90’s. It was originally conceived to be a game starring Jean-Claude Van Damme (who ironically starred in the Street Fighter movie) but when that fell through the game went a fantasy route instead. The idea behind the game is that there is a group of non-earth people who compete against the Earth (and other realms) in fighting tournaments called Mortal Kombat in order to take over those realms. A small number of warriors are chosen to defend the realm and if won they guarantee the freedom of the realm for another 100 years (I believe). I might be mixing up the movie lore with the original video game lore. Either way the tournament is for the freedom and safety of the realm.
Graphics 6/10 – I don’t feel like I could honestly rate this game higher on the SNES when I know how the future games look in comparison. This game has alright graphics but they seem pretty limited. More than likely because of how the games development went (the original developing company went bankrupt) that this was as good as it was going to get on the first try.
The sprites for each character were average at best. There were even 3 characters (2 regular and 1 hidden) that had the same design with only a color difference. The animations and the overall feel of the characters visually was good though. They respond in a more or less normal fashion to what I’m used to.
The place where this game redeems itself (like so many games I’ve reviewed) is in the backgrounds to the levels. There was a good amount of effort to build a feel for what the tournament location. It didn’t feel like 10 random levels all thrown together but different locations in a similar environment.
Sound 8/10 – This is a place where I feel this game did a good job. The music for this game is great. There is an overall eerie and oppressive feel to the music throughout the game. It sounds like the kind of music you get in a war movie when the defending force is looking at an overwhelming army coming at them and they know it’s going to take everything they’ve got in order to survive and win. This game has that feel to it. Every song feels like it is bearing down on you. It’s a great theme for a fighting game like this. It fits really well.
The sound of the fighting is also good. The sounds of getting hit sound like getting hit and blocking sounds like blocking. It’s obvious when you get hit. I also like the various voices you get to hear from the “Fight!” to the “Come here!” or, “Excellent!” and then the “Finish Him!” at the end of the fight. The sounds just fit into the game so well. Also, the sounds of people getting hurt sound good too. Not sure who was involved in the sound and music design for this game but they hit the nail on the head in my opinion.
Addictiveness 9/10 – I loved playing this game so much. Playing through the game itself was enjoyable because you had 7 different characters to choose from and each time through was different because of who you started fighting each round. There were also a handful of secrets to find (like Reptile) which made the game more fun. I also really enjoyed the tests of strength the game had. More often than not I used a spoon for the top ones because they helped you hit buttons faster than just using your fingers. That little addition made the game even more fun to play because it was an extra fun thing to do that wasn’t the fighting but seemed relevant in a martial arts fighting game.
Story 7/10 – I actually feel like the story for this game makes more sense than just about any other fighting game story I’ve come across. Sure, it’s a strange fantasy story but at least it gives a solid reason why most of the characters are competing rather than just assuming they will for reasons we never get. Every character has public, and some private, reasons for competing and each is quite different that the others. I won’t go into them because that will take too long but the individual stories as part of the backdrop of the overall story of the game makes it even more compelling to learn about.
Also, the story itself is interesting. A sorcerer is using a tournament as a way to take over Earth. The Earth is tasked with coming up with fighters on its side to defend the Earth and Shang Tsung, the sorcerer, has some people that he brings in himself. If Shang Tsung wins then he can take control of the Earth. If the Earth’s defenders win then they keep the Earth safe for 100 years. Not the most amazing story but in the fantasy setting it exists in this is quite an interesting and compelling reason to fight.
Depth 5/10 – This game is not nearly as in depth as the games that come after it. With only 7 players to choose from in the beginning it is pretty lacking in characters to choose from. Especially when compared with Street Fighters 8-12 that it had at the same time. Still, those characters were pretty well developed as characters. There was also a hidden character and 2 final bosses as part of the game that weren’t playable.
There is also a versus mode which is fun as well. With only 7 playable characters it doesn’t remain fun forever but it’s still a solid second mode to use. Still, knowing the games that come after it this one is pretty lacking in depth.
Difficulty 6/10 – I was going to rate this game higher but thinking about it some more it really wasn’t that tough to beat. I could beat most of the enemies I faced without using any special moves at all. If knowing the special moves of each character is not needed in order to beat the game then it can’t be that tough to play. Still, it’s a fighting game and does require good reaction speed and skill in order to beat so I gave it an above average score.
Overall 6.8/10 – While this game spawned one of the most successful fighting game series ever made the first game was lacking. The graphics were average for sure. Improvements made to later games are so noticeable it is almost hard to play the original compared to Mortal Kombat 3. The sound did a lot to make up for the bad graphics though. It built the overall feel for the game where the graphics didn’t measure up. The game itself is fun to play. The gameplay is pretty solid for a first try and doesn’t frustrate like other games do. The story is one of the more interesting parts of the game and the multiple endings depending on who you pick definitely kept me coming back to beat the game over and over. Overall I think the game was a good starting point for the genre and unlike some others games this was NOT the peak but the start of what would be a great and varied franchise for years to come.

Mortal Kombat Review   Zircron Swift
Mortal Kombat is famous for two things. Firstly it's fighting system, with intense fighting and dodging moves, but secondly and (probably) more importantly, the blood! Well....it was a noticeable feature. It was popular because it quite possibly the first fighting game to include blood in and not be ashamed about it, and we're talking really gruesome stuff here. It wasn't afraid to let the player completely over kill their opponent in pointless yet satisfying moves and have blood spat everywhere. But is there more to the game than just mindless violence? .....Your right....what am I saying? Lets just look into it then.
The story is....a little foggy. The screen comes up and tells you about different codes, such as a secret code or the code of honor. Then talks about Mortal Kombat following a certain set of codes. I don't know, then it takes you to the menu screen. Once you start playing, you realize you are in a tournament to be the best fighter, as it shows you a ladder you must climb and fight whoever these guys are. You get to pick bewteen eight characters. I'll pick the Scorpion guy, 'cus he's the only one I really know. And I set it to easy, as these sorts of games tend to have really misleading difficulties, as in normal being next to impossible, with hard being "have to be Chuck Norris" to beat wrtien all over it. This might be different....
The fighting seems simple enough, you can attack with kicks (and punches) and can attack while jumping. But get this, most attacks are round house kicks, so if you want to block them, then all you need to do duck, and they miss. This can lead to really intense game play if done correctly. But the battles can end in a matter of seconds if you don't know what your doing. I found this out the hard way.....on easy mind you! But I defeated the first opponent after a game over or two. There was a chance to finish him, in which I kicked him and.....nothing, he just fell. Wasn't there meant to be a really gory move that involved pulling their spine out if their throat or something?
I later found out that I needed to preform a special move through a series of different buttons, much like the special moves of Street Fighter. It's never simple with these things....I suppose it's all the more satisfying if you press a combination of buttons to make it work. Time to check the internet for these moves. Ah, they are called fatality moves. That's quite catchy. So after a few tries I preform the move correctly and....WOW! Did you see that? Scorpion burnt the opponent to a skeleton! ....I might have over reacted there =S    Each player has their own fatality move for you to try out. Some are pretty gruesome, even by my standards. Well.... now that I've looked at the fatality moves, I think I'm done with the game, to be honest.
On with the the rest of the review, I suppose. The graphics are pretty good, as the backgrounds are pretty detailed, much like Double Dragon. The players look very realistic, even in 16-bit. But the graphics that make them look real, ironically, make them look fake and cheap. It looks like they used some photo system instead of making the spirits themselves. This makes them lose their charm apposed to ones that were made without shortcuts. Just looking at them annoys me a lot, and I'm not sure why.
The music, I think, is much like Street Fighter. But I don't like it as much. It's a bit plain, in my opinion. The game has more to offer than meets the eye. You can fight a hidden character called Reptile, but getting to fight him involves not only a lot of skill, but a lot of luck and patience's. To get double flawless (as if just being flawless wasn't enough), is one thing, but to get it on a certain stage as well? Why....how could you even begin to figure that out? I think there's a cheat to enable blood with every hit, but I've been unable to enable it.
The game is hard, even on easy. I like a challenge, but the difficulty balance on this game seems rather unfair. The first fight is ok, if not  little hard, but the fight after is just insane. I can hardly get his health down to half. You seem to have little recovery time in hits, which can lead to great combos, or your instant death. When you get hit, you must do something clever, or forget it as your death is then intermittent. It's a case of learn fast or die, which isn't good for a fighting game. Good for a steep learning curve strategy game. But for a fighting game? good chance is that some might give up too soon. Although I am pretty bad at these types of games, it's a wonder I completed Street Fight II =P
Overall, I give this game a 7.4/10       This game has something about it that I like about it. I hate it, it annoys me, and it doesn't seem that good. But I can't help but like it as well. The game play can be extremely intense by the very fact of just ducking to dodge a round house kick, and I like that a lot. If you like Street Fighter, you'll probably enjoy this game. If you felt a fighting game should have more violence and gore, then this is the game for you. I have a feeling that this game got it's reputation through the gore alone. Now, I see that a lot of people enjoy this game, and I thought it was one of the all time greats, but the more I play it, the more annoycited (a combination of annoyance and excitement.....yeah, I just made that up) I feel, but more annoyed more than anything. Maybe I just don't understand it. Similar to Street Fighter, I can see what makes it so good, but I don't get it. Maybe it'll grow on me, like Street Fighter....

Mortal combat 1 for super nes.   jlh
I wrote this review because I actually played and beat this game. First time I seen Mortal combat was in the arcade and there were usually a lot of people watching and playing the game. When I seen someone used a fatality for the first time I knew this game was too cool. I enjoy fighting games and that is why I gave this game an overall score of 9.
For the graphics I gave this game a high score of a 9. Simply because of all the fatalities and secret blood codes. The characters are nicely drawn and colorful. As well the boards are all unique some having to do with the fatalities, very cool.

The sound on this game is really cool. From the music to scorpions voice "get over here" and also sheng shun's voice at the end of the battle "finish him", the sounds of the game make it enjoyable to play. Did I mention the music is epic and to me fits the game nicely.
Addictiveness gets a good score from me coming in at a 9. It is a high score but with all of the difficulty settings and figuring out the fatalities, someone can play for a while without getting bored. Not to mention the basic attacks and special attacks each character has and some secret stages and enemies this game has. Besides the one player mode the two player adds a lot more to the fun and addictiveness of the game.
The story is okay with just a score of 7 from me. Don't get me wrong the story is good but to me it is fairly typical of good guys V's bad for the domination of earth or the outer realm, which is why the combat takes place. The story has been able to through out a movie and lots of sequel's to the game, I'm just hard to please with the story on most games.
I only gave this games depth a 7 because all though it has a lot of attacks and endings, to me it is just a fighting game and the point is to beat all the characters and main boss, the end.
On the difficulty of this game I rated it a high score of a 9. If you set the difficulty at easy it can still be somewhat of a challenge. With the endurance battles ( 1 V's 2 enemies) this game can get difficult, especially the harder difficulty settings.
I will end this review by saying it is a good game to be the first in the series and although some of my scores were low it is one of my favorite games to play all time.

GET OVER HERE!!!   aquabludolphin18
The first time I heard about Mortal Kombat was when I was in a Video Game Museum.
I saw the Nintendo 64, the Sega Saturn, the GameBoy family and many more.
When I looked at the Super Nintendo, there was a lot of cartridges beside it.
I saw Mortal Kombat in that pile. I got curious so I searched it and found this game.
Graphics: 9
The graphics are really decent and are superior compared to the Mega Drive (Genesis) version.
The developers used more complex colors on all of the sprites than in the Mega Drive version because the SNES had a bigger color palette.
So, in a nutshell, the graphics are great.
Sound: 10
The sound and music are very clear and FAR superior than the Genesis.
The music sounds like actual music that you can play on an actual instrument rather than 8-bit music or computer generated music.
The voices are also very clear.
In the Mega Drive version, when Scorpion would say: "GET OVER HERE!" it sounds like the voice was amplified to much and you would hear some static. It's kind of like if you heard Scorpion say that from a radio with a damaged antenna.
In the Super Nintendo one, the quality of the sound is much better.
Addictiveness and Depth: 7
The replayablility value is lower because there's just not much to do.
All you do is fight, fight, fight.
There's a two-player mode where you fight each other to the death or for fun or to see who's better.
There's also no blood.
Although it's kind of minor; you need at least some blood to give you the true feeling of beating someone up.
They should've had an option or a code that you had to put in like in the Genesis version.
There are 7 characters to play as and each one is unique.
They all look cool, too.
Cage has sun glasses, Sub-Zero has a neat costume and Rayden has a bunch of rays around him.
You basically fight many characters until you fight Goro and finally, the Mortal Kombat Master (not for long, though), Shang Tsung.
Difficulty: 8
The difficulty can be INSANELY hard sometimes.
The more you advance, the harder your opponents get.
Luckily, the Super Nintendo Controller has about all of the buttons you need to make things easier.
On the Mega Drive, there's not enough buttons.
You need to know many button combinations or anything like that to perform some moves.
Anyways, what I'm saying is that you need to know what to do or what strategy to use to out smart your opponents...or, just mash buttons.
End of the line...
I don't care if you agree with my opinions or not, but all I want to say is, this game is quite decent.
I think this is a lot better than the Genesis (Mega Drive) version despite not having blood.

mortal kombat super nintendo/snes review   SuperCrash64
Not gonna start off with intro. Because most of you already know what mk is all about
The graphics for the super Nintendo version are very nice and smooth the coloring is also very accurate to the original mk1 arcade  and it has most detail which appeared in the arcade version although the characters seem to be squishier than they should be I'm not sure why considering they did not have that feel in mk2. One thing that kind of bothers me in this version is how the characters seem bigger than the backgrounds to me it makes the games graphics feel pretty unbalanced.  anyways graphics gets a 9 the characters being bigger than the backgrounds does make the graphics style feel a little unbalanced to me.
Sound well most arcade sound effects are here some are still missing. Such as the announcer saying flawless victory and falaity like it did in the arcade version stuff that should not really be the case here sense this was included in mortal kombat 2. Soundtrack  I really like the soundtrack Its directly sampled with the arcade music. But it seems Sculptured software took it up a notch  and gave the music much more of a king fu movie feel to it . That just makes the soundtrack more truthful to the arcade but more creepier and kick butt feel to it . Sound gets a 9 while the music track is accurate and great sounding there are some sound effects that are missing.
Addictiveness I'm not sure why but this port always seemed special to play its prop bally because this version of mortal wombat 1 had the most potineal . even without the gore in the game I still find the game very addicting do to the neat remixed soundtrack and harder game play. Addictiveness gets a 9 its still fun to play although this version lacks blood and gore
Story 5  in many other Mk game reviews I said it has the same story so I'm not gonna repeat myself  besides most of you would most likely to know the mortal kombat storyline
Depth really the snes version is kind of hard to beat  It offers the hidden character reptile and all other stuff . Mk didn't have a great number of characters until later  on even then I think they had too many ninjas lol. anyways the snes version is at a harder difficulty and that would make the game longer lasting. Depth gets a 8 for this game
Difficulty ok most of you people may think censorshpping the blood and gore was the main reason do to this bad port  think again most super Nintendo fans would not mind this, the main problem was the controls there seems do be a spilt second when you press a button and the action happens on the screen. This is why the port was kind of hard . Difficulty gets a 7 the spilt second controlling is pretty bad to get used to.
Overall ratings 6.5  its still a pretty decent version of mk1 that definitely had the most potineal . The spilt second lag in controlling will get irattting . and make the game very fustrating .  I give the snes Version of mk1 a Grade D a okay port I'm my book .
at least its not as horrible as the game boy version of mk1

Mortal Kombat Review   Marcmoney
Overall - 9.3
Ah..Mortal Kombat...a good classic game. :) I enjoyed playing this game.  It has been one of the most popular old games in the world.
Graphics - 8
The graphics are very good.  Even though it looks bad, it sure looked good back in the old days.
Sound - 8
The sound is awesome.  "FINISH HIM," I love that saying.  Good sound effects too. :)
Addictiveness - 7
I would play this game again, but there is a way to beat the game faster and I will tell you later on in the review. :P Trust me, you will be like, "oh my god lol."
Story - 10
The story is awesome.  If you hadn't seen the movie, you need to see it.  This game is exactly like the movie.
Depth - 5
The game is not that big.  There is only like about 20 battles and that's it.
Difficulty - 5
The game is not that hard if you know how to play Mortal Kombat.  I can't imagine my new strategy on this game. :)
Wrap Things Up...
Mortal Kombat 1...wow...great game.  Now what you probably have been waiting for is my strategy.  What I do is that I use any character and I just duck and just low kick them.  All they do is just walk up to you and just try to punch you, but you low kick them and they push them back.  I did that to get all the way to Goro.  So, I highly recommend getting this game, it is a whole lot of fun. :)

Mortal Kombat SNES Review...IGN STYLE!   dazzsheil
Mortal Kombat was originally an arcade game realeased in 1992 created by Ed Boon and Midway games. It was intended to out-preform and out-gore Street Fighter II And in my opinion Mortal Kombat does most of that but falls short in most of the same areas Street Fighter II Did.Heres my Mortal Kombat (SNES) Review (BTW,I'll be posting a Genesis review soon aswell,so check that out when i do review it!)
GRAPHICS: Mortal Kombat did take a bit of a downturn for the SNES But you can't help but appriciate those digitised actor(es)s and the games amazing textures.
SOUND: While not having that signiture title tune the SEGA Genesis version has,the SNES Version of Mortal Kombat still has everything else including those great actors.....COME HERE!
ADDICTIVENESS: No matter how many times you enter Shang Tsungs tournament of death you wont be bored.....so many moves sets for each character and each unique Finisher "cough "Fatality"cough" you will be mastering MK'S Moves in no time.
STORY:This is where the Game fails, basically Liu Kang is the chosoen warrior of Earthrealm and must save it from Shang Tsung....this will be the basis for the ENTIRE SERIES.....
DEPTH: While no codes to unlock gore,The SNES MK Still has Reptile and has many other exclusives
DIFFICULTY: MK Is NO Pushover it will kick your a*s especially Goro,Goro is a force to be Reckoned with
Overall I Give the SNES Port of Mortal Kombat a 9.6 because of lackluster story and difficulty

So Mortal Kombat, we all know of it and we all love it, from the not so great movies to the amazing video games, to the creation of the ESRB rating system as we know it! But that was years ago for the game we are talking about today, did time do this masterpeice well, or did it finish it off with a kiss of death? Next time on AMC's Mortal Kombat.
So as this is a port of a oversized gaming controler with a screen that had a never ending addiction to coins of all sizes (not really just quarters) the graphics arent as good as the machines as they had to shrink it down to a 16-bit size. But they still did an amazing job of it, just think of all the old ports that promised one thing on the back cover but showed another on thee tv, you see mortal kombat and you get mortal kombat. The game uses sprites that was made of stop motion models of real life people doing the ridicoulus moves you see on screen (I sure hope they got paid good money for the cosplay they did) and it works out surprisingly well, it might be a bit choppy and rough around the edges (in more ways then one) but this game just oozes the feel/look of the original Mortal Kombat trilogy. The locations look pretty good to, they range from a tornument arena to fights above a spiked pit of death and reptile-like ninjas (ok you got me on that one) my favorite is a toss up between the Pit one and the Shang Thungs throne room, just watching him lifelessly, motionless.....ly, almost-as-if-he-was-just-part-of-the-background-like, watch us fight just makes my day. If your playing the SNES version then a good right hook to anywhere on your opponent will cause them to spew out blo........ sweat (them sweaty kneecaps man!) but if your playing the Sega version and you put in the A.B.A.C.A.B. code (named after an album title from the old band named Genesis) then the sweat turns to BLOOD!! I hear some soccer moms didnt really take kindly to the blood but hey who knows maybe they should play some Dead Space or something man. So while your beating each other around you might as well look cool while your doing it (im looking at you shades rocking Jonny Cage) and a lot of the characters do honestly look pretty neat for how they modeled them, my favorites being Sub-Zero cuz I like the color blue and ninjas, and speaking of the Cagester i really like his defeat animation, all laying on the ground looking up all sad and stuffs. So all in all Id give the Graphics a 7 out of 10 they didnt age the greatest as a lot of other SNES games did, but it made a solid mold for future MK game graphics and for that we thank it.
You cant tell me that one of first things you think of when you think of the original Mortal Kombat sound that Lui Kangs HYAH!! Sound just doesnt destroy what little collective brains cells hasent been destoryed by that sound. Or the HUH!! sound Sub-Zero makes when he does a sweeping kick, or how about that satifying sound the blood makes when it hits the ground after an uppercut, so the game is a bit of a grab bag when it comes to the sounds, you for sure win some, lose some with it. Outside of the character selection screen I cant think of another song thats in the game to be honest but when I think of Mortal Kombat the music isnt exactly what comes to mind to me, except for that awesome Mortal Kombat theme song, but that didnt exist at this time so that doesnt count! So rather then the repatisious sounds of the fighters hitting and getting hit and the 16-bit fatality sounds there isnt a whole lot to talk about involving sounds, but I most definitly give a nod to the epic narrator of the game for sure one of the highlights the game. So all in all Id give the game a 6 out of 10 for Sound, a lot of short annoying little sounds but what it made a staple in the series, the announcer and the epic sounds the fatlities make, for sure make this a game you will remember in more ways then one.
While the series as a whole for sure has its addictive qualities to it, the original on its own doesnt have a whole lot in that department, its a proof-of-concept game it showed off what it came to show and itll be back same time and place next year with a bigger budget, so buy a ticket dang it! Fighting is what you come here for, and maybe to beat up some boards every now and then but its really all about the fighting and........ thats it really. While the fighting really makes the game (sure hope so its a fighter) it doesnt last forever, I dont want to say something like Super Street Fighter 2 is better cuz of its fighting, cuz it kind of is, but Mortal Kombat was doing something new, but I still cant deny that once you do the story tower then your done, cuz you really are. I also dont think the multplayer brings much more layer to the depths of the game, so to make this part short and sweet, the game is a bit Addictive but once you play the newer games you can see what the original is lacking (stll an amazing game dont get me wrong) so Ill give it a 5 out of 10.
So Ill spoil the end of this section and say that I didnt give the story a score cuz really, there isnt much of one for the original one.............. in that sense, but if we are talking about actual Mortal Kombat lore, its pretty good if I do say so. The games story, if you look it up cuz you kind of have to a bit, is that you play as one of many different fighters to make it to the end of this tornement called the Mortal Kombat tornement. Spoiler alert in the cannon Lui Kang wins, what did he win? The tornement silly, now on to the next game! But to add more butter to this already buttered toast: The tornement is being held by a evil sorccorer who eats souls ontop of his soul foods during breakfast who has been doing this for years named Shang Thung. If the people from Earthrealm (Earth...... duh) cant win this time then its bang, zoom, straight to the moon, so Lui Kang, Jonny Cage, Sonya Blade and I guess Kano? Hes just kind of there, one eye missing and all that, go to the tornement in Outworld (New Jersey? I dunno, somewhere not of this plant) to save the day and stop Shang Thungs evil rain of soul foods and herbs and spices! In the game itself everyone has there own ending if you beat the game with that character, they range from nonimportant to................. nonimportant but hey its flavor text so I cant really complain, and once again, all this gets major imporved upon in later games. The lack of a story is a bit of a turn off but games (exspecally fighters) of the time didnt care about all that Stephen King crap yet, but the actual overarcing story I think is pretty good so for the games Story it gets a BLANK out of 10 and for the overarcing story Id give it a 7 out of 10.
So going right along with the Addictivness: unless your punching some inanimate object in the face, or a board in the face, then your probably looking at the Highscore screen which in its ownself is............ something, its something of its time no lie (not saying modern games dont have score boards) but unless you and Bob down the street are into the one and only MK 1 competition to exist ever then you probably dont care about the Scoreboards. But what does the fighting have to offer? Well all characters do the same basic attacks as each other, with some slight variations in animations but their special attacks are all different. From scorpins classic GET OVER HERE! spear throw to how Lui Kang knows the names to all his moves in his annoying voice, everyone brings something fun and unique to them when you play as them and for that we thank the debunked Midway Games. Everyone also has there own Fatilities to, which are impossible to pull off I dont care if youve been playing this game from the womb! But once you do finally figure out that you gotta input certain character specific button promps in the graceness of a god sent from the heavens then you can sit back and staifiyingly watch the 16-bit gore comense. Be it Raidens deadly lightining frying you to a chrisp to the aformentioned Kiss of Death from Sonya that..... also burns you to chrisp..... or maybe the spectre Scorpin with his...... flaming skull that..... burns you to a chrisp man these people love fire! So the game has some things to do, but assuming you know all the buttons and what not you can see every single inch of this game in an afternoon if not faster, and lets not forget about the super secret reptile boss fight that is hard to get to but is the first of many secret fights to be in the series. But like I keep saying Mortal Kombat 1 does what it did best, but Id still give the Depths only a 4 out 10 because even just the next game to come has more to offer then this game, well this game is the only game to gave a whole rating system as a christmas gift I suppose.
Ok so flat out this is one of dem dare ol' school tough as nails arcade-esque viggie game that will not pull any punches in any sense of the phrase. This game will make you feel like you actually lost all that blood, and guess what, it all came out of your fingers as you vainly bash the buttons as your little stop motion sprite fights to hang on to their puny life. And you will lose a lot, if you dont lose to someone in a early one on one fights you sure will when you get to the set of 3 Endurance matches where you take on two fighters meaning just to beat those 3 fights you have to fight 6 people, wowzers! If they dont stop your rain of terror then Goros going to shove that terror back down your throat with his many oversized arms with his lack-of-finger-havings hands, cuz hes big and scary and has his own lair for god knows what reasons! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAnd if you make it to Shang Thung then I sure hope you like Fireballs (Fireballs! Yum!) for breakfast cuz he ate all the soul foods already ('member, you 'member) but he thinks sharing is caring, and hes going to share your face to death! So yeah, the game is pretty hard, the Test Your Might sections arent the easiest either, but not as bad as some later ones (Im looking at you MKX) really the hardest thing to master in MK1 is the Fatalities, you master those and your a pretty kool kat in my book. Dont be suprised that I gave the Difficulty of this game a 10 out of 10 cuz you know its hard, no matter what difficulty you play it on! Heres a cheap noob (siabot) trick I used to do as a kid: just stay crouched and uppercut everyone, you can basically beat the game that way, its cheap and boring, but it works and hey, your guarrented a Stage Fatality on the Pit level.
Ok time to wrap this up as best we can after we just Chop Sueyed (why DID you leave the keys up on the table) the heck out of this review with all these awesome fighters! All in all the original Mortal Kombat sure left some major shoes to fill, it left its mark on the video game community as a whole and it sure impacted my life along with millions of other lives to. From lunch room rumors to cheat codes to an endless supply of ridicoulous blood the original Mortal Kombat looked the testament of time in the eye and gave it a quick one-two then something about burnt to a chrisp. This and the rest of the series is something one must behold their ownselves, you can just feel the wonder and epicness as you play through them all, but you should really start with the original game and its kool overall Rating of 8.5 out of 10.

Mortal Kombat Cheat Codes

Fight against Reptile

In the bridge stage while playing a 1 player game, get a flawless victory in both rounds and perform a fatality at the end. Your next match will be against Reptile in the bottom of the spike pit.

Goro Glitch
Perform Rayden\\\'s fatality on the third endurance stage in a one player game. Goro will appear silver colored and flashing.

How to attack Goro without making him unfreeze
It\\\'s possible to hit Goro without making him unfreeze! First, use Sub Zero\\\'s ice blast
attack to freeze Goro. Now, quickly run up to Goro and do a few (3) sweeps. (Back + low kick) This attack does not make Goro unfreeze! However, do not be too greedy and try more than 3 sweeps on Goro as he can simply unfreeze by time.
To maximze damage after freezing Goro, sweep him 3 times and than do an Uppercut attack! (down + Hard Punch)

The blood it's self in this game, got replaced with sweat or dirt, from the looks of it.
SuperCrash64 11-25-13 - 12:20 PM
It was censored because of Nintendos dumb family friendly policy, Thanks to that this port didn't sell so well, so they ended up making up for it, with the home port of mk2 on snes(which includes blood.)
Jinx98 09-23-13 - 05:52 AM
If theres no blood chances are its because its the Nintendo version...Of course they gotta be family friendly
