A Wild Breath of Fresh Air   Spacey Sul
What up folks! You probably have guessed what this is by now, but if you haven’t: It’s me again, with yet another game review! Today, I’d like to review a game that many people seem to agree is a stellar game - Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild! (Well, looks like I’m on a roll with all these RPG reviews huh?) As per usual, before I get into the actual review, I’d like to give everyone a bit of background on the series the game is in, as that doesn’t really fit into the actual review itself.
The Legend of Zelda series is one of Nintendo’s Big 3 series that are pretty much recognized across the world (the other two being Pokemon and Mario). The series centers around the main character Link, the princess Zelda, and their enemy Ganondorf. Now, they aren’t always the exact same people -- the series uses the same ‘formula’ of Link gaining the master sword and defeating Ganondorf, and does it across different times. The character will always share the same name, but will not be the same person. The game really centers on the ‘Triforce’, which each of the main characters represent (Link represents Courage usually, Zelda is Wisdom, and Ganon/Ganondorf is Power). Many people consider the Zelda series to be one of the best video game series of all time, and like most of Nintendo’s series it has quite a large following and also a large amount of media that isn’t just the main series.
Now that you guys know a bit more about the Zelda series, how about we get into the actual review? Let’s begin.
Addictiveness
Look, the game is hard as heck. Frustrating as heck (which I’ll explain more in the difficulty section). I got so angry at one point I almost threw my Switch. But, I have to admit, it was still fun and very addicting. Once I got on a roll, you couldn’t get me off (mainly because I knew if I got off I wouldn’t gain that same momentum ever again if I did get off). I enjoyed the experience, no matter how frustrating it was. I don’t know how Nintendo does it, but they sure know how to keep you in even when you would probably be better off not being in. I guess that it got so frustrating that I just couldn’t put it down until I managed to get past that one bit. Then I’d reach another bit and continue that cycle. Probably wasn’t good for my brain in all honesty, but dang did I have fun. However, once I did get off I found myself not going back on for a while just because I didn’t want to have to deal with whatever I left.
So, while fun and frustrating to the point of addiction, I could just never constantly play it like I could other RPG’s. It’s just a bit too frustrating to deal with at times. Due to this, I’d have to give this section a 7.
Difficulty
Boy did I have fun getting used to this game… And by that, I mean that I died way more times than I needed to at the start, and I continued to have my butt kicked for the entirety of the game. It’s not a easy game, I can tell you that much. I’d accidentally walk in front of enemies without realizing it, or would miss a shot and all of the sudden I’d be swarmed. This is a game where you have to be careful, or you’ll literally get eaten alive by the enemies. There’s enemies that you pretty much can never beat, or at least that I could never beat. And another thing that happens if you aren’t careful and pay attention to your weapons, is that they will break and honestly? I hated it, I always got my butt handed to me because all my weapons broke during a boss fight and I couldn’t find anything. Gotta be real careful about that mess.
Combat isn’t the only difficult part about this game. It has many puzzles that you must (or, at the very least, attempt/should) do, if you want to get stronger and actually be able to defeat the big bad of the game. Some of those puzzles were pretty easy at times, but most of the time… Well, let’s just say it usually took me about 30 minutes of trying before I either figured it out or I decided to say screw it and looked up the answer on Google. Sorry Nintendo, but my brain is not smart enough for this!
You also have to be careful of not wasting too much stamina or you’ll die, or spending too much time in certain areas because the weather there will cause you to die. Seriously, this game is geared towards making it hard for your character to survive if you aren’t the careful type.
All-in-all, the game is pretty difficult. A fun one for a first time Zelda player, for sure, but you’ll hate yourself if you aren’t careful and if you aren’t good with puzzles. If it weren’t for some of the simpler puzzles and times in the game, I’d give this a 10. However, those take the edge off a little so I’ll leave this at a 9.
Graphics
To put it simply, the graphics are absolutely stunning. Like, I let my friend play a bit of this game during the end of our Senior year, and he went through the intro at least 3 times just so he could take in the entirety of the first whole landscape shot that appeared before the title of the game appeared in gameplay. He was in absolute awe, and he’s the type of person who isn’t easy to awe when it comes to graphics.
Nintendo did an amazing job with the graphics with this game. I loved all the models they used, as they meshed well with the landscape that the game had. They always bring creative monsters to the plate, and managed to make the landscape so beautiful. I’ll be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a pretty game from Nintendo. Sure, I give a lot of their games high rating in graphics I’ll admit, but nothing beats the graphic quality of Breath of the Wild. It makes my expectations for the next one shoot through the roof though haha.
I feel like I’d be committing a crime if I even thought about giving this less than a 10.
Story
The story for the game is a very interesting one, and a very enjoyable one. I can’t put into words how cool I find the story to be, and how much I enjoyed completing it. I loved the fact that it allowed Link to give silly answers, and showed us more of him as a person rather than only a warrior. I loved pretty much every character they introduced -- they were all interesting and unique, and brought something fresh to the story. I love the whole idea of Guardians and the Beasts and ancient technology, the whole ‘being defeated badly once but doing it again anyhow’ vibe it gives. Who doesn’t love a good underdog story right?
The lore involved with this tale was also pretty dang cool, and made me wish I could just save it all in a Codex like Dragon Age does. The story has such a good replay value, and I doubt I could get sick of the story (I could certainly get sick of the darned gameplay though). I haven’t played any other Zelda game, so I can’t really claim this to be my favorite Zelda story, but I can certainly say it’s an amazing one and I can see why people claim this series is one of the best series around.
So, anyways, I think it’s probably obvious I’m giving this section a 10.
Depth
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure this was Nintendo’s first attempt at having a more ‘open-world’ game. If it was, then wow did they do an amazing job for a first attempt. There’s so much to explore in this game, and so much to do. The story quest takes quite a lot of time to deal with, and allows you to do so much more while you attempt to do those. There’s a lot of puzzles to beat, plenty of quests to complete. The map is gigantic, and I seriously doubt I’ve uncovered all the secrets in it and I’ve poured plenty of hours into the game (my Switch can testify for that). There was so much to do right off the bat that I didn’t even reach the first Beast (the one I chose anyway - went to Zora’s domain first) until roughly 40 hours in the game.
There’s also DLC to consider, which adds even more to the game (I don't know how much, however as I do not have the DLC myself). There’s plenty to uncover, and plenty to do. I’d have to give this section a solid 10 as well, to be honest.
Sound
Look, the day Nintendo doesn’t make a game with a soundtrack I enjoy is probably the day I die. They went all out when it comes to the soundtrack for this game. There is at least 4+ hours of unique music (from one of the videos I found), and has about 240+ titles (aka songs) in the game. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game with so much titles before! But, I can say this much - they definitely didn’t make any that were awful. Only Nintendo would make so many songs and manage to make every single one amazing. Each sing fit the area perfectly, and reflected what I felt when I was in those areas. Nintendo never disappoints in the sound department, that’s for sure.
And again, Breath of the Wild earns another 10.
Overall
And we reach yet another end to yet another review. As usual, I’ll be separating the review into my own Personal Rating (what I would have given it if I didn’t break it down into sections), and the True Overall Rating (the rating I get when I total up the scores). I use the true overall rating when I put down the rating for the game. Now, into the ratings we go.
Personal Rating: 10
Even though I was constantly frustrated and angered by this game, I’d still give it a solid 10. It’s an amazingly made game, and there was definitely a lot of time and effort put into it. And while I was constantly tilted by it, I still enjoyed it immensely, and it definitely has found a spot in my top 5 games of all time. I wouldn’t change a thing about it, even those very difficult and annoying puzzles and combat situations. That’s what makes the game what it is, and is probably why I enjoyed it so much - I felt so accomplished whenever I managed to get passed something, it made me enjoy it even more knowing how hard I had to work for it.
True Overall Rating: 9.3
This game is incredibly solid. It has amazing depth, amazing graphics, amazing storytelling, and one amazing soundtrack. They gave you a lot to do, and made sure you’d have hundreds of hours of content and gameplay. They outdid themselves in the graphics department as far as their usual graphics go, making such a great landscape that my not-so-easily-impressed friend couldn’t help but be awed by it. They gave such a interesting story and lore behind the story, while staying true to the basics of the whole legend the game has. They made a soundtrack that could fit everything in the game, clearly dedicating a lot of time and effort to it from the sheer volume of songs and length of the soundtrack. It’s also an incredibly difficult game if you’re not the careful kind or the puzzle type, and you’ll definitely spend time figuring those things out
.
What killed the rating though, was the fact that the game could get so frustrating that it was actually hard to pick up again once you decided to get off. It’s easy to get lost in playing the game and spending many hours in one go, but it’s not so easy getting back into the game once you end your time with it the previous time. It becomes intimidating, thinking about that one frustrating bit you probably decided to end your playtime at. It took away from the addictiveness of the game.
Overall, Breath of the Wild is a stellar game and definitely one to look into if you have experience in the RPG genre and enjoy puzzles. If you don’t, however, I’d stick to watching others play it if you wish to see the story unfold.
That’s all for this review! Thank you for reading and hopefully you enjoyed what I had to say. If you could, I’d love feedback! What did you think about this game or this review? What can I improve on with my next review? Hope to hear from you all!

The most daring, gorgeous Zelda game I've played   endings
This the game that launched thousands of Switches. Its the best game on the console, and the most captivating Zelda game I've played in a long time. This is a game that perfected how its world works and reacts, gave Link all-terrain climbing skills, made a massive open world then took off the handrails and lets the player go anywhere nearly from the start. Want to climb that mountain in the distance, yeah the one with the frost peaks on top, do it. Seriously, Link don't need no pick axe, no climbing gloves.  Run against wild horses, hop up and tame one? Go for it. Fight some tough monsters, even though they can kill you in one hit? Yeah, use your back flips, parries and such to turn the tables on them, its all Dark Souls in Hyrule!!  Want to swim in Lava? Wait, don't do that, it never pays off.
Its a zelda game that takes chances.  An open world game where you scavenge gear and food from your foes and the environment. Tracking down the sometimes hidden shines to make your character's life stronger or stamina bar to climb better. You must solve the puzzle of the shines first, though small in size there are over a hundred of them. This game has probably the best tutorial in recent video gaming, and its done with little hand-holding. You get the special abilities to interact with the world very early on, and these building blocks are used for the rest of the game, right up until the end. I kept expecting extra powers to come then I realized, the game had no need to limit you- the world of Hyrule is all yours, right from the beginning.
Graphics: 10
I thought one part of the Witcher 3 had some of the most beautiful locations in video games. Now this game has them. This game's places are gorgeous and/or foreboding, and its not running on PS4 or XBOX One. The merge of just light touches of fantasy and sheer size is jaw-dropping. The enemies can be small pig-faced kobolds to giants, I just wish the game had even more foes!
The weather effects are fantastic. Heat rising from lava, along with sparks of magma. The creepiness of skeletons rising from the dirt at night. The time you go into a shrine to find it pitch black. I loved the thunderstorms and it was hilarious when I discovered the outcome it could cause!
Sound: 8
Breath of the Wild is like the first Tomb Raider, sound is not constant, but used to add feeling or tension in. The music in it stands out, and is lovely. I expected a lot of callbacks to classic Zelda tunes, and a few are here, but most of it original music. The voice acting is pretty good, but there is not a lot of it, only important characters and in cut-scenes. No, Link doesn't have a voice actor, even though there are clearly times hes talking. But it works. The lesser characters will get little grunts and noises that are similar to the type in past games, such as Midna's gibberish.
Addictiveness: 10
I couldn't stop playing this game. I would wake up at odd hours and just go full ham, using the time however i wanted- sometimes to find shrines, sometimes to track down some of the mysteries the game carefully suggests but never shoves in your face - or just cut grass for the bugs and rice inside. Sometimes i just spent 30 minutes cooking stuff. The best times I had were the exploration, and I loved finding the hundreds of things hidden in Zelda: BotW. This isn't like Mario Odyssey, where the meat of the game is in scouring for a couple of tasks, there are many, many many things to do in this game. Who knew I could cook (well only in video games)?
Story: 7
This is sort of a soft-reboot for the series. You will see familiar races and characters, but while the quest is simple in explanation, recover what recover what memories you can, get as strong and tough as you can and defeat Ganon with or without the help of the Divine. The subtely of the story is a strong point, rather than a detraction. Fans familiar with the series will already know things about some characters, or at least one version of them, while newcomers won't have to worry about a backlog of lore and needless baggage. This game is very easy to jump into, but if you want more, there is things you can do, free of will, to find out more. Not a lot more, but thats a design choice, and a risky move I think that paid off.
Depth: 10
Did I mention theres a ton of stuff to do in this game? I put 80 hours into this, easily, still didn't get everything done. I got addicted to it, and when I saw the end game approaching, slowed down my story so it didn't have to feel like the end. I collected special outfits and upgraded their powers, found rare weapons, and was often surprised by the secrets I found, the world is really that big.
One of the best things I liked was the game's approach to the villagers you run into. Each town has their own citizens, who have their own schedule, and their own unique dialog to things like rain, blood moons, and just a lot more stuff than you'd expect them to say.
You can use any weapon or shield your foe drops, or you find in the (wait for it) wild. There is a ton, so don't bother collecting them all, you'll never have enough inventory.
Difficulty: 8
It must be mentioned, the most polarizing part of this game is the breakable weapons and shields (your armor does not, thankfully), and cannot be repaired. This is very vexing to some people. The game encourages you not to use a certain weapon as a crutch, and experiment. You do eventually get a small collection of repairable gear - but honestly I didn't use it  - the cost was too high for me. There is one weapon that is unbreakable though, though it has its own limitations.  I had played games with breakable gear before, so I was somewhat acclimated to this idea, but some downright hate it.
Zelda BotW is its most difficult at the beginning, when many foes can kill you in a hit or two, and even once you get 6 life hearts and you'd feel like you're getting somewhere in previous games in the series, that is nothing here. You'll still run into things that will straight up murder you at 6 or 8.  Finally, you'll get to a place where you start turning the tide, maybe you go in a zone thats full of dangerous monsters and get a great weapon from the Stalfos, maybe you luck out and get something nice from a shrine, or a Divine power gives you a small edge. Once you get into mid-game, the game's difficulty begins to fall back slightly, and by the end, it gets fairly easy. Perhaps it should be that way, but it was most exciting in those first 20 hours or so, when you didn't feel safe.  The enemy AI must be commended though, for they are more intelligent than in many other games. I was 'economically' using bombs to kill foes without wasting my arrows or weapons, then started noticing they ran from bombs or kicked them at me! if you start a fire, they will run. They use tactics like flanking also.
Overall: 9.5
I cannot see any reason why someone who had a system to play this would not get this game. Hate story in games? Thats fine, you'll still do great in this game since its skippable. Just want to cut grass all day and collect bugs? There is no invisible walls forcing you to stay in one area, or even on a single quest. This is a fantastic open world game that I didn't see any glitches on, and its massively fun and engaging. Play it.

Weapon Durability: The Game   zanderlex
I remember back in September or October I was sittinf in class and I got the random urge to get a Switch for no reason. So I went and got one right after class. With it, I bought Super Mario Odessey, Breath of the Wild, and Pre Ordered Let's Go Eevee. Breath of the Wild was only the 2nd Zelda game that I ever played but I heard so many good things about it so I had to pick it up.
During the first few weeks of having the Switch I played Zelda for like 10 minutes and got bored. At the time, I was still in my PS4 phase and also watching a lot of DVD's and working and school and stuff, so I didn't have much time for something new. A couple months ago I fully went into Switch mode now having like 20 games and Breath of the Wild was one of the first games I put a ton of hours into and I wasn't disappointed. I already put in a good number of hours into playing it and still haven't gotten bored yet, despite going back and doing the same thing over and over.
GRAPHICS: 9/10
The graphics are really really good. This is the kind of game where the world is so big that you'd expect it to be on the PS4, XBOX One, or PC to have these kinds of graphics. The world is so colorful and beautiful, with so many details that make is so wonderful to look at. Every design is great as well, whether it's the castle, the divine beasts, the creatures, the mountains, or everything else in between.
All the animations are very smooth as well, meaning there's never any delay, especially in combat, and it's pretty easy to get lost in how real it feels. The game looks great, it runs so smoothly, it's crystal clear, and the graphics gets a 9 out of 10.
SOUND: 8/10
The game sounds pretty good. I can't exactly say that I'm a big fan of the music because I haven't actually played much Zelda before this going back to the original games. So the only Zelda music I have any experience is the original theme song, so I don't really have any attachment to the songs found throughout this game. I think the soundtrack is pretty good though. For sound, I think the game gets it's most points for the regular sounds of the game.
The composers did a good job at making the world feel very immersive, and I played the game so much that I'm used to hearing certain sounds and being like "oh god I'm about to die." Personally I wouldn't call the sounds of this game as good as other Switch games such as Super Smash Bros and Super Mario Odessey but it's still pretty good. The sound aspect of Breath of the Wild is going to get another solid 8 out of 10.
ADDICTIVENESS: 10/10
Breath of the Wild is super addicting, and it's very hard for the game to get old, even after playing for more than 100 hours of playing. The world has the same kind of appeal that you would find in games like Skyrim and Red Dead Redemption 2. There's always something to explore and places to visit. One thing that I love about this game is the blood moo, which is very helpful in grinding but also gives you a fun and challenging reason to go back to areas that you've already been to.
The blood moon just respawns all the enemies that you killed, so when that happens, you can spend countless more hours having fun killing them all over again and its a source of never ending resources so you can keep collecting items, and weapons. Because of weapon durability, you're always on the lookout for new weapons, so you find yourself fighting monsters that you've already killed with more of a purpose than other games, where you would just grind for EXP.
I feel like the combat is the most addicting part of the game because there will always be a monster to fight somewhere and you need to keep collecting items and weapons, so it never really grows old. You can spend dozens of hours fighting, dozens more searching for items and cooking, and even more hours just exploring the world, even if you've already been somewhere before. The addictiveness aspect of the game gets a perfect 10 out of 10.
STORY: 9/10
At it's core, the story of the game is basically just saving the world from Calamity Ganon and doing that by freeing the Divine Beasts. The only issue that I have with the story is the process of finding memories. When you look at all the memories, together they tell you a lot about the story, the world, and the characters. They tell you this through really nice cutscenes too instead of just text.
But you have to find the memories. The game really makes you work to see most of the story. Instead of straightforward reveals like in most games, where you just see the story unfold in front of you, Breath of the Wild makes you spend hours searching for where the story takes place before you can actually unlock that part of the story. To me that kind of takes away from the game a bit. However, once all the work is done, the entire story and all the little characters and plot details are really good and well written once all laid out in front of you. In general, the story of the game will get a 9 out of 10.
DEPTH: 10/10
The game has so much to do. Even if you don't spend time grinding, exploring, and doing the hundreds of side quests, you will still spend many hours playing the game. Heck, even if you didn't do any of the story or quests, and just tried to explore the entire map without gliding, you would probably spend more than 20 hours just walking around, and that doesn't even include combat. When you put all the different aspects of the game together, you get something that will take you at least 100 hours to play and that's not including whether you go back to do more battling or exploring.
The bulk of the depth is split into three major categories.
The massive world with so many different places to explore and different biomes to traverse from plains, to mountains, to volcanoes, to deserts, to beaches. The sheer number of shrines and the different puzzles also add a lot to do.
The story and all the side quests offer a lot as well. Spend countless hours with the diving beasts, build your own house and a village, collect Korok seeds, and do all sorts of other tasks. They all add up and if you do them all, That's dozens of hours down the drain.
Cooking also adds a lot to the depth of the game. First of all you're going to spend so much time finding different ingredients throughout the world, then you're going to spend so much more time actually cooking and going through different recipes.
Beyond those major aspects, there's even more to the depth, but just those alone are enough to warrant a 10 out of 10 at minimum.
DIFFICULTY: 7
This is definitely what I dislike the most about this game. There are a number of times where the game can be very difficult. Running around and exploring the world is a lot of fun. Combat is fun. Flying around is fun. But then you get to some of the quests, puzzles, and shrines, which can either become too challenging or too time consuming.
I remember I was doing the Yoga Clan hideout and I kept raging so hard. I kept getting caught and I was so close to entirely giving up on the game. I died like 40 times in total and it took around 3 hours of game time to beat this one level. Plus a lot of shrines don't really give you any explanation or hints and it becomes too hard at times. Difficulty gets a 7.
PROS:
Beautiful world with lots of places to explore.
Ability to continuously go back and fight enemies that you already killed.
Insane number of deep and well written characters.
Paragliding.
CONS:
Easy to lose interest if one quest or puzzle is too difficult or time consuming.
Weapon durability makes it easy to lose a strong or favorite weapon.
Stamina is a problem the first 40 or so hours.
OVERALL: 9.3/10
Overall, Breath of the Wild is so much fun, so beautiful, and there's so much to do. Right now it's one of my two most favorite Switch games and I don't really think there's going to be another game that takes such a high spot for a while. For fans of Zelda, it's a no brainer that they should play this game, but even for those who don't like Zelda, they should give it a try. This is the perfect game for those who like open world exploration and cool combat systems. This is essentially the Switch version of games like Horizon Zero Dawn, Red Dead Redemption, and even Skyrim.
Overall, the game is really good and deserves a really good grade, so I'm going to give it a 9.3 out of 10. If some of the puzzles were a little less rage inducing, I might have said it was even better.
Yes, I can't wait for the sequel.

I've been gaming for over 30 years now and I can easily say that this game is among my favorite games OF ALL TIME and I haven't even finished the game. Won't tell you how many hours I have into it after getting it in May, but it's A LOT.

Nintendo, you have really done it again with this game. This game is so fast, so engrossing, that it's really hard to find words that give the game the proper justice. This game is AWESOME. Plain and simple.
