I haven't made a review and quite awhile, felt like I should make one again. I'm reviewing the lesser known LJN game, "Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge." I was playing this on my SNES last night when I decided I should review it. Everyone says LJN sucks. I can agree, they do. But this game isn't as bad as you might expect. It's a platformer-ish game that mixes platforming and fighting. Without further ado, the review!
Graphics - 4
The weakest part of the game. The SNES was Nintendo's lovely 16-bit home console. SNES graphics were good. Super Mario World, one of the five launch titles, had great graphics. The Donkey Kong Country series came along with legendary graphics. This game, Spedermon and teh Axe-Men, was released just over one year after the SNES (and Super Mario World and F-ZERO). This game has terrible graphics. I don't even know what 90% of the sprites are supposed to be. No detail.
Sound - 9
Who doesn't like superhero music? It's cool, awesome, and even cool. Do you remember the NES game Silver Surfer? It supposedly sucked, but had great music. The same composer did the songs for this game. I love the music in this game. It does use redundant instruments, but I definitely like how it sounds. Wolverine's level has pretty weird circus music, but it still sounds good. On the other hand, there's almost no songs. Nope. I believe there are only seven songs. Yeah, only seven. That sucks. But hey, they sound good.
Gameplay/Addictiveness - 7
Although it is a very fun game, it doesn't do a good job of pulling you back to play again. Every time you get a game over (aka every 15 minutes) you have to replay some retarded training level where you collect blue beeping diapers for no reason whatsoever.
Every single time you die. It takes a long time, it's ridiculously boring, and it just doesn't make any sense. But I really do like the levels. Spiderman is in a ruined city defeating Shockers and... Satan. Image of Satan from another version (not SNES):

He's red in the SNES version and shoots white-hot fireballs at you. Totally Satan. Wolverine's level is in some strange tall creepy circus building. There are clowns that make nightmare-fuel noises and throw stuff at you, Jack-In-The-Boxes that shoot you with machine guns, and a boss that kills you in 3 hits because this game is hard as adamantium (I SAID ADAMANTIUM WHILE TALKING ABOUT WOLVERINES LEVEL, HAHAHAHAH). Cyclops' level... Never could find out how to get past the first minute of it. Doesn't make much sense. Storm's level is probably the easiest of them all. You're underwater and you shoot laser beams and water level normalizers. Gambit's level involves running away from a massive metal ball and throwing cards at chess pieces.
Anywho, it's a fun game but really frustrating.
Story - 4
Some guy named Arcade steals the X-Men, Spiderman comes to save them, Spiderman gets caught, you play two levels per character to get to and defeat Arcade. Whoop-de-doo.
Depth - 4
One of the shorter SNES games out there by far. There's that diaper training level plus two levels for each character (Spiderman, Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, and Gambit), totaling with 10 regular levels and one training level. The levels are long but repetitive, so they don't feel quite long. Short game.
Difficulty - INFERNAL
Try beating the infamous Kaizo Mario hack with your feet, doing and handstand but having the controller right side up, on a unicycle, getting a hole-in-one on the world's hardest golf course. That's still not hard as this game. This game is harder than The Lion King for Genesis and Super Nintendo. This game is harder than any game I've ever played before, even Action 52's Ooze and Cheetahmen. This game is seriously hard without having crappy controls. The bosses can kill you in three freaking hits at full health, the enemies can quickly drain your health, the platforming part is very difficult, I'm pretty sure Cyclops' and Gambit's levels are impossible, and to top it all off there's almost no health powerups. In fact, Wolverine's level doesn't have any health powerups because they think that Wolverine healing himself is good enough. No, you just don't make a game this hard. You don't. Spiderman climbs the wall like an idiot, Wolverine can't dodge the clowns, Cyclops' level literally makes no sense to me, Storm has no brief invincibility after taking damage, and it is completely impossible to dodge attacks as Gambit, not to mention the fact that the platforming in his level is insanely difficult. This game is way too difficult. Oh, you can beat Contra without getting hit once? That's nice, good luck not getting a game over on this game within the first half hour.
Overall - 6
Graphics suck, story sucks, it's really short, and it's painfully difficult. he only good things about the game is the tiny soundtrack and the fun levels, once you get over the difficulty problem. Overall, it's worth a play on Vizzed if you have a controller, but probably not if you don't have a controller. It's that hard.
