New Play Control: Pikmin 2 Review   totaldramaman2
OVERALL - 9.5
The first Pikmin game was very well-known back when the GameCube was around. It was one of only five games re-released under the New Play Control brand on Wii. You may have seen my review on it from April, and if you did, you know I rated it positively. However, I guess Nintendo thought it was odd that Pikmin 1 and 3 would have both been on Wii, (this was before it was moved to Wii U) and Pikmin 2 wasn't, so they decided that they would also release Pikmin 2 for Wii. Now, because it was just released in America last month, and due to the GameCube version being rare, not many people know what makes this buried gem so great.
Graphics - 8
Pikmin 2's graphics were some of the best on the GameCube, and the Wii remake has enhanced them even further. Sure, they look outdated in comparison with Pikmin 3, but for Wii standards, it looks amazing. The Pikmin are all individually animated, and the game's natural environments look great. The world map, however, is just different color trees plastered over the Pikmin map, however, it makes sense because it's the same area that was explored in the first Pikmin game, however, the regions have changed drastically. The camera works slightly different than on the GameCube version, partly to make battling enemies a little easier. In underground areas, objects and obstacles always look like the dungeon's environment calls for: in water-based dungeons, there are some metal objects that have rusted, in the fire-based dungeons, there are mountains only the Pikmin can climb. This game has some of the best graphics on the Wii, especially after looking at some terrible casual third-party games.
Sound - 9
The original Pikmin didn't have very many songs in its soundtrack, however, Pikmin 2 has around 100 songs. Even different floors in dungeons have the music change just for it. The music always matches the place your in: the Piklopedia has soothing music, perfect for reading the dialogue, the snow level has music you would hear on the radio around Christmas, and the peaceful floors in dungeons have music you would hear... in an art gallery. Don't ask me whether or not that's true, I've never been to one. Anyways, this was one of the best soundtracks in 2004, and it still does today.
Addictiveness - 10
As long as you can handle playing a difficult game, you can play this game for hours. You're encouraged to play dungeons all at once, even though you save at the beginning at every floor. Finding ways to fit in dungeons, treasures, and Pikmin reproduction all in a short 13-minute day isn't too hard to plan out, and it keeps you playing, and taking advantage of being able to control two captains in an effort to multitask helps expand your productivity in the day. Also, I should mention: you have no time-limit in dungeons, and when you come out, it's as if time stood still while you were in it. It's been my most played Wii game recently, and it's well worthy of it.
Story - 9
Now, at first glance, the story seems pretty ordinary compared to the first Pikmin game: Captain Olimar is returning from his first visit on the Pikmin Planet. He flies home to Hocotate, expecting to see his family and friends, but he is greeted by his boss, who tells him the company they work for, Hocotate Freight, has gone into a debt of 10,100 Pokos, the currency of the planet. Olimar was holding a bottle cap, which was meant for his son to keep, but on Hocotate, it was very valuable, and seeing the value, the President sends Olimar and Louie back to the Pikmin Planet, (Earth) to find more. Okay, so maybe the story doesn't sound as good, but there's even more backstory revealed as you play the game, which I won't spoil.
Depth - 10
The game can take a long time to beat. The game still goes on after you get 10,000 Pokos, but I won't spoil the details. Even though there are only four main stages, they each have at least three dungeons with multiple floors and treasures. There are six kinds of Pikmin, three of them being new. Red Pikmin are immune to fire, and slightly stronger than most Pikmin. Yellow Pikmin can no longer carry Bomb Rocks, but they are still light, and are immune to electricity. Blue Pikmin can swim in water, and can save drowning Pikmin. The three new Pikmin include Purple Pikmin, who are 10 times stronger than all other Pikmin, White Pikmin, who are immune to poison and can find buried treasure, and Bulbmin, which are immune to fire, water, electricity, and poision, but can not be brought above ground.  Pikmin still mature from leaves to buds to flowers from drinking nectar, and they now trip less. There is also a multiplayer Battle Mode, where there are exclusive dungeons, and you battle to get 4 marbles. There is a Challenge Mode, featuring thirty exlusive dungeons, with a time limit, and limited amount of Pikmin. You can also read about the different enemies you meet along your journey in the Piklopieda, revealing facts like Dwarf Bulborbs actually just mimicing the species they pretend is their mother, and... cooking tips from Louie, the second captain in the game that you play as, stating facts such as Mamutas tasting like chicken. The Treasure Hoard shows Olimar's thoughts on the treausure, and gives him lots of personallity, and you can also read the Ship's (who can talk) sales pitch on said treasure.
Difficulty - 8
This game is very difficult. With enemies like Burrowing Snagrets, Careening Dirigibugs, Waterwraiths and Orange Bulborbs, and with sneakily placed obstacles, it can be very hard to play through. However, thanks to the motion controls, it's easier to attack quicker, and in case of emergencies, such as Pikmin massacres, running like a little girl is also more possible. Because at times it will happen. Some floors in dungeons are randomly generated, meaning even owning a guide book won't always help. Sometimes, treasures differ from PAL and NTSC regions, meaning varying prices. For example, I don't think Coca-Cola is sold in Europe. In the NTSC version of the game, there is a Coca-Cola bottlecap, but in PAL regions it could be completely different, and it could be worth more or less Pokos, although the total number of Pokos gained from treasures and number of treasures are the same in NTSC and PAL versions of the game. In dungeons, traps such as bomb rocks, boulders, Dwarf Bulborbs, and other small enemies will occasionally fall from the ceiling, with no way to tell they're coming.
CONCLUSION
New Play Control: Pikmin 2 is a must-own title for the Wii. If you never experienced the original GameCube version of the game, you owe it to yourself to play this. It's easily worth the mere $20 that Nintendo is charging for it.

Pikmin 2 Box Description

Captain Olimar has returned to the planet where the Pikmin live, and he's all business this time. The company he works for is going bankrupt, so to save it, Olimar must salvage the treasure buried all over the planet. Of course, he'll need the help of the Pikmin to do that--he can't do anything by himself. Control one of two main characters--Olimar or his assistant--as you command your Pikmin to defeat enemies, propagate more Pikmin, collect precious doodads, and solve puzzles. With unlimited time, new colors of Pikmin, and two-player cooperative play, Pikmin 2 improves on the original in many ways.
