Retro tough challenge   endings
Ghosts N' Goblins is a tough challenge. No doubt. If you are not using save states or some kind of way to backtrack before disaster, its definitely one of the hardest games the NES offers. Before getting a rep for lightweight and kiddie games, games being 'Nintendo hard' used to be fact. What makes its legacy so known?
1) interface - the hero, Arthur the knight, moves a bit stiff. His jump is a commitment, he cannot change direction once he takes the plunge (though you can face the other direction). There are not a lot of death pits in this game, but you will often use a jump as a dodge, and often land right onto another foe or bullet. If you do happen to toe a ledge, he drops like a stone.
2) interface-again! The hero gets a few weapons on his quest, but can only hold one at a time. Some that are great for certain parts (the slow ax destroys the dragon in just a few hits) is terrible in other stages. And you cannot switch until you find a new one, which is very infrequent. To make it more difficult, the game has 'trap' weapons placed that can block the path, forcing you to take it, and basically lose as its not for this section.
3) Enemy placement- The bad guys tend to not take many hits, but are haphazardly always in your way. Chaotic birds that dip in every 10 seconds in, a red devil that dive bombs you at angles you can barely counter from, and the worst - the big guys siting at the top of the ladders who are just waiting for you with their weird blue orbs. These guys take so many hits, and can rain fire on you from another platform, they are probably the hardest foes in the game due to where they are put.
4) Timer - There is a short clock for each leg of the stages. There is only 6 stages fortunately, but waiting for a big guy at the top of the ladder to move out of the way or a moving platform to come back around just eats your time. Even worse, you can be weapon farming and waste all your time trying to get one of the random drops. At least you get unlimited continues.
5) Fake ending- If you don't have a certain weapon for the final boss, you have to repeat the entire game over. Yeah. Its not any different, and just pads the game.
6) No life bar. You get one safe hit, which you lose your armor, then you spend the stage in your underwear. One more hit and you are dead. At least he gets invincibility frames, but against guys like the red demon or the big guys, thats a small comfort.
Graphics: 8 - This score may seem generous, but this tough game could have been made even more challenging with a typical dark palette. Imagine this game with gloomy colors. At least the bright graphics stand out, and you can't really blame a death on 'not' seeing something. Its a game about scary monsters and spooky things, and it delivers.
Sound: 4 - The music for the first stage is pretty good, but its downhill after that. The sound effects are very loud and tinny, and the 'ghost' noise is grating. Its not the strong point.
Addictive: 7 - One of the best selling points of the NES is how queued up the games are to get back in. You are gonna die a lot, but its always ready to give you more continues and keep going. Sometimes though, you hit a wall and just are fed up. There is no save/password for this, so they wanted you to do it all in one go. It can be done in about 40 minutes if you're good.
Story: 7 - So the knight is hanging out with the princess in ... a... graveyard.. lol.. just having a picnic, when all of a sudden a big red demon guy with bat wings comes and swoops the princess off! He looked evil, but happy! Better get her back. One cool feature is you see a map of the whole game before you start, so you know how close or far you are to victory.
Depth: 5 - There isn't alternate paths, or anything very different, even if you do the dreaded second run. You have to get creative with dodging foes, and making the most of the weapons. The bosses have fairly predictable movesets and few projectiles, making the basic red devil usually harder than they are.
Difficulty: 10 - If you are playing this on the NES console, this game deserved to be in the top 10 of hard games. Its just made to be unforgiving and punish you for the slightest mistakes. There are a handful of areas where you can tell the programmers are being unfair.
If you think Elden Ring is easy, and have an hour to kill, try this game. It doesn't look like anything special, but the cruelty is baked in.

Ghost and Goblin's review   Zircron Swift
Ghost 'n Goblins was a popular arcade game back in 1985. It featured a challenging game play that seemed very much like Castlevania, only with its own original twist. The game later found it its way to ports on different systems, one of them being the NES. Games like these are very challenging, and requires that degree of skill not everyone will have to complete it, which is why I sought to play and complete it. If it was anything like its future games like Ghosts n' Ghouls for the Sega Genesis, then I might expect something from the ending to be a trifle more than annoying. The arcade and NES games are more or less the same in essence. The only real key difference is that some weapons don't work on certain bosses in the NES version. >_>  Still, only time will tell. Let's get that weak armour on and journey through several demonic creatures. This is the NES port of Ghost 'n Goblins.
The story, as far as I can guess, is that you, King Aurthur (who looks suspiciously like Chuck Norris) is out on a date with your girlfriend (I believe Princess Prin Prin) in your underwear, looking up to the night sky. Everything is peaceful when bam! A red demon appears out of nowhere and kidnaps your date and makes off to a far away castle. You don your royal armour and immediately set off to rescue her. And then you start to play the game. All of a sudden zombies and crows start appearing out of nowhere, ready to make your life a living hell. I like the little castle in the background when you first start playing, symbolising a journey that will take a lot of hardship to complete. For me, this means a challenge, and I love a challenging game. Your armour is pretty useless as armour standards go. If you get hit once, you fall out of your armour/the armour breaks/can't handle demonic powers/other and you are left in your underwear. Get hit again, and you become a comical pile of bones and you lose a life.
The game play reminds me a lot of Castlevania. I'm not saying that one copied the other or anything like that, it's just remarkable how how the jumps are in the same fashion, the enemy placement is clever and challenging, the different weapons are similar but not altogether the same, and everything seems to feel Castlevanian when I play this game. However, this game has its own originality to it that makes it stand out like Castlevania did, only in a different way. Ok, the bosses are repetitive, lame and a little easy, but with only two hits before a death, this balances out the boss difficulty quite nicely.
I fell in love with the controls. Fixed jumps are something I have gotten used to when playing the old Castlevania games. You can, however, turn while jumping so you can throw your weapons in the opposite direction. This gives a little more freedom to how you can go about attacking things. Climbing up ladders is annoying, as you can't attack while on one, and you can't drop down midway. When getting to the top of a ladder, you have to get all the way to the top before moving, so you can't cut corners at that stage. It's choppy, but it does encourage some thinking beforehand so you don't accidentally jump into some water. Why is it in old games when ever you get your feet wet, you automatically die? These "heroes" can handle several waves of enemies, travel great lengths and take several hits before dying, but they can't handle a little water splashed in their faces?
The graphics aren't too bad. You can see they are a little pixelated when they made the transfer, as well as the entire thing being downgraded 8-bits. The arcade graphics are far superior, but it does the job. The zombies still look like zombies, and the background is still relatively eerie. Some of the enemies look odd, but then again, running around in your underwear fighting demons is as well. The music also isn't too bad. It's been rendered 8-bit due to the port of the game. Since it wasn't originally made in 8-bit, the quality seems somewhat lower to listen too and feels like it was just...converted to 8-bit instead of composed.
The difficulty of the game is insane. Again, this reminds me of Castlevania. The enemy placement and patterns, however, are harder than Castlevania. Castlevanis enemy placement was clever, and needed you to be skilled and work around the patterns of the enemy. Here, the enemy placement is just as clever, only half of their patterns are random to an extent. You needed quick reflexes, skill, and a bit of luck to get past some of the enemies in the game without getting hit, and when you got past that part, there were just more of them. It's very hard to compare Castlevania and Ghost 'n Goblins with their enemy placement. Castlevania seemed more organised and thought out, but Ghost 'n Goblins seems like the bad guy is just throwing stuff at you in the hopes you would die, but he does it in an orderly fashion. In the end, both games difficulties are very much the same, but very different at the same time, if that makes sense. I'm not going to choose which I like better, I'm just giving credit where it's due.
You get to choose from a collection of different weapons. You can only hold one weapon at a time. This can range from your trusty lance to daggers, and torches to shields. Yes, you can throw shields. Something I have found out is that every weapon does the same amount of damage. Since the shield has a shorter range, it would be logical for it to be stronger. However, it took the same amount of hits to take down other enemies with the dagger as with the shield as well. The axe and the torches annoyingly arch over the enemy, making them fairly useless. You could duck and throw them, but those could arch over the smaller enemies as well. The dagger is slightly faster than the lance, and will probably be a popular choice. Sometimes you might use these weapons, and come across a magician. This guy will throw a spell at you that will turn you into a frog, so be careful.
Overall, I give this game an 8.9/10    It's a fun and challenging game, and anyone looking for one of those "hard as nails" game will surely want to look into this one. It's one of the harder games I have come across, and is by no means to be underestimated. The ending is annoying and cheap, but it just adds to the challenge of the game. Anyone who beats this game completely should pat themselves on the back.

ghosts and goblins??   poopso
Ghosts and goblins *blaagh* that's me spitting it out after saying it ok lets clear this stain off the cloth of um...humanity? Yeah humanity definitely humanity! Ok lets start
Graphics:6 the graphics are pretty innovative for the nes and the commodore the gbc upped it a little bit but still ive seen much worse *cough cough Atari Indiana Jones cough cough*look it up! Now lets get back on topic the graphics are pretty nice but I feel the designers got lazy I mean I have the guide guess what that troll boss on level 1 is called a unicorn! Why a unicorn I mean really if you really want a unicorn which I really wouldn't go with make a horse and put a horn on it if you don't then take the horn off or draw something over it to make it a helmet but just call it a troll and really the while were on naming guess what there is the devils and then theres Satan(or satans? Ill explain that later)the devils are those flying things that are nearly impossible to kill just call them freaking demons! gond!(Luther kills the gond!)but that's another story(the vanguard thing)but I think I'm done here but let me compliment the graphics one more time I can actually tell what is what(except the unicorn)but really good job guys!
sound is a 6 but your probably thinking there isn't much sound to talk about but that sometimes is a good thing I mean some do sound horribly (Atari Texas chainsaw massacre beeeeeeeeeep!)and some just have no variety it just loops over to the point where you cant wait for that moment of silence when it loops over and there is some where it forces you to sit through it because you have to listen for the GOD-DANG JASON ALARM!!! But still silence is bliss...and boring so thatswhyitsa 6
addictiveness is definitely a 10! I mean really you want to finish it so you can say I beat ghosts and goblins!sorta like Mario or castlevania wait a second hmmm  castlevania...oh yeah there almost the exact same freaking game  but castlevania is actually good! ive been giving this game more praise then it deserves but you really have to give it something but its so addicting a little less the second time around (ill explain that later) but really that was the only reason I finished (that and I bet my brother 20 bucks I could finish it I got a good game with that much money)really the reason the video game crash happened was because Nintendo sent out so many crappy games *cough cough Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde oh man I'm gonna be sick) now after I finished throwing up the unliscensed games were the most horrible or the most foreign *little red hood and bible games* so this game would actually be hgg guhh averaagge oh god that was hard to utter oh god! But really you will either finish this or rage quit I'm serious I had to force myself not to quit I rage quit on thps2 because I bail on a huge trick but really there is unlimited continues its like bugs bunny's birthday bash you have nearly infinite lives so you cant quit unless you want someone to say you rage quitted that is all.
ok after that I was at 500 words I know right I had to ramble alot like I am right now ok after splashing cold water in my face because its like 2 in the morning
right that was like a break to add some words but story is a 2 apparently your in a grave yard screwing your girlfriend when the devil oh alright Satan takes her away no really that's what it looks like. I'm serious! Play the game and you'll know what I'm talking about that's about it here
depth okay this was where I was tearing my hair out I give it a 5 I would have given it a ten with 6 DIFFERENT stages but they had these words this room is a illusion made by the devil go through it again so this is the scene its 6 pm ive been playing for 4 hours with my brothers bet I have to turn it off at 8 so I think I made it and that comes up my god I was steaming I made it with 13 minutes to spare and you know what it says you are happy end you feel brave proceed to start! What! Either that or it was a different game I'm to tired to remember but it is pretty diverse so 5
ok the difficulty hmmm ive been ranting about it so how about a... UMM 10!!! ive already said enough about this just one more thing I hate going through platforms!
overall its a 5.2 but its a classic that will live in all of our hearts this isn't the best review but its all original so yeah bye!

I always laugh when people complain about a games difficulty. This game is hard, sure but it's not impossible. With save states, it's downright easy.
