My personal favorite would have to be from the Zelda game I love most, for the SNES link to the past. And I would have to say it would be the fourth sword... because it was enchanted by a fat fairy before you leave to go save the world and kill Ganon (again)

Good times, good times...

Eirinn :

Thanks for such a nice reply! I appreciate it. And yes, I was debating about the links myself, but figured there couldn't be any harm in it ( I didn't see any rules about it so I took the chance) and hoped it would generate interest in the game. Sort of a experiment to see if it was a good idea or not. And mostly I just wanted it to be interesting to read and inspire a wanting to play so to speak.

And you'll be seeing more reviews from me soon, I hope to plan to do 2-3 a week. Anyway, thanks again for commenting and rating it, I appreciate it

Dude, talk about a trip.

Let's see... I basically inherited the orginal game boy my brother got for a birthday 1991. That thing has lived through everything, drops, kicks, dunks in water and it still played. I've lost track of it since then, which makes me sad of course, I miss it.

Mortal Kombat 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mario Land 2, Final Fantasy Adventure 2, and of course, the grand daddy Tetris were my favorite games.

Ahhh, childhood... man I miss it sometimes!

Not a bad idea actually. Thanks. I think I'll go ahead and do that for now, and post the most recent rants/reviews up and archive the rest as I go as not to make it too cluttered to look at and read.

Personal thoughts and Feelings about Mega Man X:

Now this is a trip down memory lane for me. Lets go back in time a little bit now. It was the sad day and age when video rental stores were dying. Sad, but true. A small Video rental store we went to not far from where I lived when I was younger had a large selection of SNES and Sega games, good times. Better yet, it had a pizza place too! A great Friday evening all in one.

I rented the game once, and played about halfway through, and SWORE I would go back, rent it and beat it... No such chance, it was always rented out when I went back for it. Fast foward about a year, when the store was closing down and selling everything they had. My dad came home with a SNES game for my birthday, so I was totally stoked! (I had maybe 6 games in all at the time) And when I saw it was MegaMan X I instantly went for my console and the next tweleve hours were lost to MegaMan, Zero, Sigma and a assortment of Junkfood.

Best way to spend a weekend. I've played this game inside out and backwards, found every secret imaginable, beat it nearly anyway you can imagine. (Including with no sub tanks or heart tanks only the base life you start with.) This game holds a very special place for me in video game history.

The real Review:
Graphics 9: It's Capcom. It's Megaman. Its the first foray for the series in both the darker, gritty world of Megaman X and for the SNES. Of course it looks great! Though gone is the anime cuteness of the previous Megaman games, now for something along the lines of a science fiction anime, with robots! So it looks great.

Sound: 8

PUT HEADPHONES ON!

Okay? You will notice a great deal of difference. First, the music, epic. From boss battles, to the stages themselves they fit the mood perfectly, and help hype up the heavy action (especially during the last few stages where everything wants to kill X ) As for the effects, perfect, I saw now skips or lags in timing for each, and everything from the dash, to the charge up of the buster and the execution of special weapons was spot on. And when/if you unlock it, you will hear the delightful homage of Megaman doing the Hadoken. Its just freaking awesome.

Addictiveness: 5

Okay, this score is a little low for one real reason. Once you've found out the locations of the goodies, and discovered the bosses weakeness and beaten the game. There really isn't much reason to go back and play it, unless you're like me and just love playing the game and want to do 'Hard Core' plays.

Story: 8

Woah... things got dark in 21XX. Gone is Wiley and his dastardly deeds to take over the world, stopped only by Megaman, Rush, Roll and Dr. Light.

You begin... the war is already over. The bad guy won. Humanity is dying, being replaced by Reploids.

(Which makes you wonder, where was the orginal Megaman in all this?...)

So, what happened? Sigma Happened.

The Day of Sigma:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcuzqLjvKtM&feature=youtu.be

The Story, while dark, is excellent. And gets better with most of the progressive X games.(Note: MOST of the games.)

Depth: 8

The game plays on the same routine as classic Megaman games. Eight bosses, each with a weakness and a weapon to obtain after each. However, it goes a bit deeper then that. With the increase in difficulty, variety of enemies and deviousness of the bosses, there are things that have changed. Subtanks to store life energy to use at will, and heart tanks that expand the base life meter. Not only this, but armor pieces that give varying abilities. From speed dashing (which allows farther, more agile jumps) To Barrier breaking helmet, damage reducing armor, and even a upgrade to the buster that allows a 3rd charge level for the buster cannon, and allows you to charge special weapons to unlock a second ability for the weapon. So it all adds a level of depth to consider throughout the game, to see what can get you where, and to see what might get by exploring. Not to mention, some weapons, while not doing extra damage to bosses, might weaken them in other ways.

Difficulty: 7

While difficult, it is not insurmountable. Careful study of the enemies, and bosses will let you figure things out. So challenging certainly, but not impossible by any means. However, you might feel that way by the time you get to last boss which does not play fair by any means. So it's a perfect balance.

Final Thoughts:

If you ever liked Mega Man games, you'll love Mega Man X.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER!

If you want to know how to get all the goodies just watch this!

MrEon rambles about the game:

Robin hood, out law and vagabond loved by mostly everyone. The medieval batman so to say, if you like analogies that is. The games plays fairly well, though perhaps it tries to do too much for itself. But then, for a game based on a movie, which are notoriously terrible, this is perhaps one of the few exceptions to that rule. (Anyone remember E.T. anyone? one of the early precursors to that rule)

But this game, actually hit on alot of high points. First, its rather faithful to the actual movie! Alot of games either change the plot or do a 'alternate' telling of the movie, which is all in all terrible idea. (or maybe good idea just often done terribly) But this stays close to the movie, starting in the prison during the crusades as a sort of intro level. Where you play the game mostly from a top down, semi isometric perspective. However, some battles are done in 2D side scrolling for fencing, which can be hard. You can jump, duck, roll and stab stab stab. Just be careful of the villains who have a longer reach then you do.

There are also large scale battles where your friends join in the fray, these how ever take a new perspective, top down again, but your little character gets MUCH smaller, but your party comes out to fight too, though this is usually where you get mobbed by dozens of enemies for awhile, never fear if you have a bow though!

Now, what else does the game do well? Well side missions, now I know I said that many games add things that were never in the movie and do it terribly. Well this is a example of them doing it well, because they draw on the original Robin Hood story as well. Such as Guy of Gisborne sent to kill you, and expanding upon the home base in Sherwood forest, which makes it quiet fun as you see it progress.

Now this can be a very challenging game! Whenever you can find potions, food, and bandages, you'll need them for a quick health boost, especially right before fencing with the enemy like the Axeman, or Guy himself. Also, don't forget to outfit your friends too! The better equipment they have, the better they can help you fight.

Now as much as I personally love this game, it is not without some flaws, a case of perhaps trying to do a little too much...

Now on to the real review!

MrEon breaks the game down:

Graphics: 7
I gave the game a seven because while they certainly aren't the worst graphics out there, they still aren't the best either. While some games get away with simple looking graphics ( IE: Zelda, Megaman etc.) Robin hood attempted to give the game more graphical depth, however it ended up giving it a messy look, where the graphics glitch from time to time. Not to mention, wall collision (Or collision with any object including enemies) is a little strange at times and can be frustrating when dealing with narrow hall ways and being able to attack in only one direction.

Sound: 6
Here is where I had to dock a few points. Namely because of the 'Ching ching ching ching!' you will here hundreds of thousands of times in the course of the gameplay... if not just in the first fifteen minutes of the game. The game music is fair, but nothing memorable, however I did like the 'Twang' in the intro when Robin fires off the bow, that was a nice touch.

Addictiveness: 8
This could be considered a early Action RPG for most of its elements. While the inventory equipment you can find is not expansive, it is rewarding, however finding gold, food, recovery items becomes something of a obsession especially late in the game when you don't want to die! So I do very much enjoy the general gameplay as far as sword swinging, dungeon crawling fun goes, this game does it right, and the bosses, while very challenging, aren't impossible either. (Except for maybe Guy, but then he's one of the end game bosses)

Story: 7
They took the story largely from the Robin Hood movie around the same time. And they did a fairly nice job with the portraits of the character likeness from the movie. However they went about adding a few things as well, like Guy of Gisborne, Boar hunting, expanding the Sherwood forest base, and so forth. But they left things here and there out, but understandable as trying to put it all in would have been very difficult to accomplish for a simple NES cartridge, but all in all, they did a very nice job of it.

Depth: 7
As mentioned previously, this game does quiet a number of things right. 2D fencing, dungeon crawling, large battles and RPG elements. However while it does them WELL its not great to be honest. More items would have been fun, less bouncing off walls would have been better, and the sound effects at times makes it hard to immerse into the game. But over all, it doesn't do it badly, just not exceptionally.

Difficulty: 9
You will die. Not because you aren't skilled but because at times there are 3 or more baddies ganging up on you and forcing you to bounce all over the place making you rethink how to move your pixelated character about the screen to fight since you can only attack in one direction at a time. So it can be very difficult, which is one of the larger flaws of the game unfortunately because you wouldn't think it would be if the controls were a little tighter, however they aren't so bad (like Dino Crisis, god I hated capcom for that) that you can't play it, just be careful and consider your moves ahead of time and you'll be fine.

MrEon Says:

Great game! Not perfect, but great. Defiantly worth a playthrough for fans of the genre.

Beastmode64 :

Then its been bricked. This used to spell the end of the PSP's life span, however it IS possible to save it.

http://www.pspmod.com/forums/psp-homebrew/12094-unbricking-fully-bricked-semi-bricked-psp.html

This should help you get into recovery mode, if your PSP is only Semi Bricked (able to recover on its own) this will show you how, if its not, then you might have to take more drastic steps, try this first however, 90% of the time this will work.

EDIT:
Oh, and one more thing. This site has the best ways to mod/hack your PSP with minimal risk of bricking it. If you happen to have a spare like I do you can fix it up but if you'd like to write a tutorial out to do it I'd be happy to.

http://www.dashhacks.com/psp/custom-firmwares/the-full-psp-experience.html

Hope it works!

Beastmode64 :

Hmmmmm....

Strange, the only thing I could think that might cause that is the older Kernal hacks which could affect the PSP in a bad way if you weren't careful.

That or if you had the PSPgo or the Slim2004 model (think it was 04 ) which had different hardware and made them very hard to hack.

Would it read off any error message before going blank? And would the psp just go to a blank screen when you turned it on? Or just after you tried to launch a emulator? Because if its going blank as soon as you turn it on, then the PSP has been bricked and would take a bit of work to unbrick it.

Eh? I've deleted, updated and reinstalled all kinds of Emus on my psp several times without any problems. Using the PRO B cfw anyway with Cipl.

What problems have you had with it?

I have the Sony PSP 1001 (Phat) and I was wondering if anyone else used the PSP to emulate games, or to have it function outside its normal parameters?

As of now I've got mine to work as a controller for my PC (great to play vizzed games with) as well as Emulate some of my ScummVM games (Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle and so, I owned them on old Diskettes still collecting dust)

AS well as a small collection of NES, SNES and GB games I have stuffed in a drawer somewhere. Though recently found I can link a couple PSPs via wireless to play games together with my wife, good times.

And of course, I HATE UMD's (namely the load load load load that flaws a otherwise great system) so I have them backed up as CSO's and ISO's and just loaded onto my memory stick (no, don't ask for them)

So, anyone else hack their PSP? Or would anyone like to know how to hack their PSP? (It's gotten alot easier since the early days of the system and the old Patapon kernal hacks...)

I reached normal rank today.

At 3 Reviews, 5 Threads and 44 posts and 4 trust points (Thank you Frodlex and Singelli!)and 37 games played you can tell I have no life really.

But this place has been great, a community I can actually be active in, no trolls I've seen (yet anyway) and people I can nerd out with about classic awesome games.

So I'm pretty happy. I had wanted to reach 50 posts before I hit normal rank, but I didn't want to make a bunch of random posts and stupid threads just to boost my post count, thats just silly to do.

I think this place is great and it'll be awesome ride I'm sure.

Hurrah for Vizzed!

Personal thoughts and Feelings about Super Ghouls and Ghosts:

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGRAHH *Controller toss, childish stomping and yelling*

... yeah...

The game is THAT hard. Capcoms gem Super Ghouls and Ghosts is not to be taken lightly. It might look and play as a simple platformer, but its utterly devious to play. A single wrong move could get you killed, the enemies are at times utterly relentless, not only that but the environment is out to kill you too. There are times when you'll just sit there, slack jawed after you've lost your last life and go, 'Thats just not fair!'... then hit continue and play again.

Thats where the charm of the game comes in. It is absolutely, at times, punishingly hard! But its so much fun! You see, you start as Arthur, knight to save the princess (really, does knight have any other duties?) And you go about in gleaming suit of plate mail armor, ready to bash about foes... then a zombie hits you and your walking about in your red polka spotted knickers.

Yep, armor is good for one, and ONLY one hit. However you can get armor back via chests, or secret spots and containers. But what happens when you already have armor? Well you get better armor! It's still only good for a single hit, however you'll start getting the weapons you carry enchanted! Which is very very good... especially when you're going against the bosses of the game because they were just plain mean! And if you happen to get a third set of armor, it turns gold and you can charge your weapons to do some seriously devastating stuff! And some of them will clear the screen of weaker enemies and do damage to larger ones... but they don't help much navigating the environmental pitfalls of spikes, pits, churning water, lightning, and worse. And one saving grace with the armor is occasionally you'll get a shield which is good for one free hit as well, without loosing your armor that is.

The real Review:
Graphics 8: It's Capcom. Its pretty. Enough said. Well not really. The graphics for the game are as always for Capcoms work for the era, beautiful, slightly cartoony yes but that hardly takes away from the game. The game takes advantage of some parallexing backgrounds ( IE moving backgrounds, or multiple moving backgrounds), as well as some nice graphic effects. So definatly solid. However some of the animation does, at times look a little twitchy, but still great.

Sound: 6

This is, unfortunately, where I had to take a couple points off to make as just 'average'. Namely because of the sound effects are just.. well... bland, and a few more then a little irritating. (this is probably because you will hear them alot when you die alot... and you will die alot) And the music is not as good as it could be, compared to some of Capcoms other games where they had done much better. Sorry capcom, but you only get a 6 for this one.

Story: 5

Demon took the princess. Go save the princess.

Yep, that's really all it sums up to. Though to be fair the booklet had a little more story and turns out this was the princess you already saved in Ghosts and Goblins, and now the demons want her AGAIN.

Even Super Mario world had a LITTLE more story... oh well, still quiet a epic game!

Depth: 8

Was the chest here... or there? Gah! Shield! Must have!

Yeah, you'll be thinking like this soon. Hidden chests aren't just nice to find, they are a necessity! They will have life and progress saving armor or shields, new weapons, but occasionally have traps, like the magician that will turn you into a skirt wearing woman (which is rather funny if it wasn't for the fact that you'll likely die from it) or bear traps.

Also finding the best routes through levels becomes a obsession over time. Because the environment is constantly against you.

Difficulty: 10

If in this review I have ever given you the idea that this game was easy (even on the easy setting) I'm sorry. Because its not! Even on normal its a hair raising experience trying to just get through the first level! and this has Normal, Hard, Expert and Professional! (Like they really need to put that in!) So if you think yourself Hardcore, or 'L337' then give this game a try. You'll be running to your Spec Ops or Call of Duty soon. But those of you who crave a real challenge, then pick this up. Unlike games today it has no achievements, just beating the game would be a Achievement enough.

Good luck!
