Local Mods : Hi, I don't know who owns this forum but I was curious if fighting games (Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom, BlazBlue, UFC and the sorts. I mean people seem to consider UFC and wrestling a sport, and I mean there is professional game play for these games, so basically I'm wondering if this would be a legitimate place to put fighting game threads assuming they're related to competitive aspects, similar or if you even consider it, a sport.

I mean if you're willing to hear me out on it I'd be glad to share why I personally consider it a sport, but I'm done here, if you want to close or trash this thread or anything be my guess, just figured I'd ask.

I should hope not.

Fighting games are waaay too cool to be considered sports games.

The day I finally decide to jump out of the window will be the day fighting games are considered sports games.

NintendoFanKimmy: Sorry Kimmy, but I consider them sports. Well, depending on the type of fighting. Street Fighter isn't, because it's just people fighting with minimal rules. UFC  is a fighting game, however, because it has rules, regulations, etc. If it's a sport in real life, it's a sport in game.

Smash Bros. will never be sports, sorry Little Mac.

thelastrequim : while there are minimal rules (Most of the time.) there are complex mechanics that also come into play making it possibly as intense (Mentally at least.) as a real sport, at the very least by pro standards I feel they are easily considerable athletes, be it Street Fighter or UFC, however while I understand you don't consider it a sports game due to it not being an actual sport, these games do tend to have their own mechanics that truly turn into a rule book.

In the end it's a mind game based on what you can and can't do to gain and keep the upper hand in these games. And while Smash bros. May never be a sport, there are still professionals all over the world who travel to play it for competition just like athletes do.

Just felt these points deserved to be brought up.

Frodlex : I'm one of those competitive Smash players, and I definitely see your points, but, by your argument, any competitive game would be a sport because of rules and mind games. I'm sure Yu-Gi-Oh! isn't a sport.

I would not say so, fighting that is in that aspect pretty much is its own genre.

I'm a huge fan of fighting games, but fighting games are considered their own genre.
Though I would guess games like WWE would be an exception, but most fighting games like street fighter, tekken or any fighting game like that, are just considered fighting games, and you most likely will not find these games located next to sports games.

"Fighting" games?  I don't they're sports games at all.  I consider games built around boxing or martials more sports games but to me fighting games are just button-mashers that aren't real sports games.

Tekken?  Nope, not a sports game.

Mortal Kombat?  Absolutely not.

Mike Tyson's Punch Out?  Okay, we have some debate here.

Street Fighter 2?  Negative.

warmaker : I never button mash after one or tow rounds of learning controls or combos. Games like Punch-Out!! are obvious exceptions, as methodical button mashing is the name of the game. If you need to mindlessly button mash, it's a bad fighting game.

I wouldn't consider most fighting games as sports games.  Maybe the only ones that could be considered sports games would Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts video games since they are seen as sports.

Local Mods : Why is this thread even still open... No one has any reason to really post here any more. It was a simple question for the local mods alone, my question was answered and now it serves no purpose. I'd like to request that it gets closed now.

Not really the thread itself, the entire forum has been pretty empty in general since there's been no activity at all.
