When i download emulators and roms, i try to open them on my computer and they either won't open, or the emulator with open with an empty black screen. How do i open an emulator and play games?

Try reading one of the guides we have at either http://www.get-your-rom.com/videos.php or https://www.vizzed.com/vizzedboard/thread.php?id=4630 for the basics of setting up some emulators.
You need an archive program like WinRAR or 7zip (as mentioned here *click me*) to "extract" the games from their archives.

Basically have a look at those guides and if you want a guide for a system you can always request one
