Before the Pro Evo & the Fifa football series, there was this...And it rocked!
From Wikipedia:
Sensible Soccer, often affectionately known as Sensi, is an association football video game series which was highly popular in the early 1990s and which still retains a cult following. Developed by Sensible Software and first released for Amiga and Atari ST computers in 1992 as well as for the PC, it featured a zoomed-out bird's-eye view (most games until then such as Kick Off and Matchday used a closer top-down or side view), editable national, club and custom teams and game-play utilizing a relatively simple and user-friendly control scheme. One of the defining gameplay elements was the aftertouch feature, which enabled effective but unrealistic swerves.[1] The game topped charts such as Amiga Power's "All Time Top 100". The graphic style of the game was used in other Sensible Software games, such as Mega Lo Mania, Cannon Fodder and Sensible Golf.
A fast and furious top-down football (soccer) game that had all the enigmatic charm of many of the Sensible Software games. This "International Edition" was superior to it´s predecessor as it had more teams including, of course, the various national squads of the time. Lots of famous soccer players of the time are playable, but you don´t really notice much difference between the players´ ability when playing on the pitch. Still, this is a fun and addictive game, particularly when playing with friends.
You can make substitutions and change formation as in real football, but to be honest, the similarity with real football ends there. Still, this does not detract from a great game as a whole, especially when you consider that it was by far the most comprehensive and best football game of the time.
It´s a shame the best version of the series is not available on Vizzed - Sensible World of Soccer (aka S.W.O.S.) - As this version had many more options, a career mode, and the awesome song "Goal Scoring Superstar Hero"!
(On a further note...Sensi had such a nostalgic following, it was available on Microsoft Xbox Arcade).
