how do you feel about censorship on television?

Censorship and the FCC in general is the biggest contradiction of freedom of speech. They are pretty much saying "you can say what every you want, buuuuut, you can't say this and that and this." In some cases it is good that it is censored but for the most part I would rather the FCC to take a hike! There is censorship everywhere but you see the censorship on TV easier and you see it more often.

Ultimately people should be in control of what they want to watch and what they allow their families to see.  People should educate themselves and take responsibility for letting their kids watch television programs that contain nudity, violence, and profanity.  If I don't know what a show contains, I should find out before I let my 8 year old watch it.  If I, as an adult, select to watch something with profanity and nudity in the evening, I should have the right to do so.  Censors should take a step back and let the audience decide what is appropriate.  If we, the viewers, don't like something, it won't get ratings, it won't sell advertisements, and it'll get pulled anyway.  That's plain economics.

I live near Detroit and Canadian radio stations and television stations are broadcast within range of us.  Their radio is much more 'edgy' because they don't seem to the have the same level of censorship as American programming with the FCC breathing down their necks.  I think the Canadian stations are better as a result.

I don't know what it looks like around the world.  

As a Christian I am shocked and disgusted and very much against it.

Wont somebody please think of some army somewhere and some people who have for some reason have had children?

Let adults watch what they want to watch! Or listen!

How I look at it, I don't think they should have censorship with television because the reason why is because you lose track on what that character is saying, and look, if you don't like the character saying those bad things, then why have it aired then, or better yet, have an option for the person for the show, like selecting strong language or not, so that way, if you have kids, then yeah those will be wise, but if you don't have kids at the moment, then you should be allowed to listen to it. Also, it's just not Television, but also in Music (Although you can choose on getting the PA rated or Clean rated but still)

So, for my 2-cents about this, Censorship takes away freedom of speech.

I really feel as if that if they want to censor television, they should take away violence and drugs from shows that get censored.

Nobody seems to bat an eyelash at seeing somebody's cheek get sliced open or herion being injected, but they drop an f bomb, and everybody loses their minds.

Censorship against hate speech surely seems reasonable. For nudity, violence, drugs, it just makes more sense to have them on separate channels than kids shows rather than to censor.

Ya I agree with everyone else. They should not censor television but some parents need the censorship or some kids would not be able to watch game shows or stuff like that sometimes.

I think that censorship is either unwanted (like on many of my shows) or much needed and it can't find a happy medium.

Well, in my country, they're ridiculous. They cut out whole scenes that lead to the movies not making any sense whatsoever, and they even attempted to rearrange one once. There was a time travel movie, and the dumb-a- excuse me, dummies actually put it in "order". It's so annoying, and they even edit out kiss scenes. KISS SCENES. What is wrong with these people? *facepalms* -.- .

I really don't get why censorship even exists. Movies in some TV networks never get censored. The US always overreacts to something that is not bad. I hate it when they think that it is going to "effect or hurt the children". As a matter of fact, TV shows and video games do not effect the changes of a kid's mind. A recent study in the UK say it doesn't. I don't think freedom of speech exist anymore. Has anyone seen the dramatic changes and makings of laws. It is getting pretty bad now.

I hate censorship it violates freedom of speech in fact I don't get why it even exists.
I've played m-rated games since 4th grade hasn't really made me want to go out and kill a bunch of people.

I think censorship is entirely unnecessary. Hearing swear words and seeing fake violence doesn't hurt anyone.

Yeah. I don't really understand verbal censorship. See the thing is that kids are gonna hear the words eventually. 

In my opinion it's better that they learn the words and understand what they mean so they don't feel compelled to learn about them from their peers because then their probably not going to know their actual definition. Which, if you want to stop kids from saying "f*ck" all the time, it's better you teach them about it.

Personally I don't mind it too much, the shows I watch are good censored or not. When I watched Nick at Nite when they had George Lopez on it I didn't even know they weren't allowed to show certain episodes cause of drinking or smoking. Family-friendly channel
The thing about verbal censorship is I'd rather my kid not repeat the words just to try to sound cool. The words don't belong in civilized conversation. Yes they'll hear it elsewhere eventually, but hopefully when they learn it, they also learn that it doesn't make you cool to use it.

a-sassy-black-lady : i think they shouldn't censor. they should just warn at the beginning of the show there might be swears, sex, etc.

There are very few shows I know over here that censor swears that are on before 10pm at night. most of the shows that are going to have swears are after 10 are around 9 which some channels like Channel 4 sometimes don't censor it and just give out a warning that there may be swears and violence etc. I don't think it is really necessary.

Censorship in general disgusts me. Especially when people decide to start censoring words and nudity. People will go crazy if they hear "bad words" or see a "naked person" (Literally not bad at ALL), but if people are murdered, maimed, tortured, etc., it does not seem to matter as much. I have never understood the backwards logic people seem to have in the US. If you do not want your child, or yourself, to watch some sort of program, simply don't let them, or don't watch it. It is just that simple. At least I don't watch any sort of standard television programs anymore, so I do not have to deal with nearly as much censorship there, but it is still a problem.
