On my friend's Yellow version, I transferred all of his PC pokemon to Stadium 1. Then, I restarted his Yellow file. I decided to trade back the pokemon from the original file to Yellow from Stadium 1, which included some Level 100's. I fought a trainer in Viridian Forest with a Caterpie(Lv. 6). I sent out a Level 100 Rhydon against it, and after about 10 minutes, my Rhydon was KO'ed, due to it falling asleep, refusing to attack/ use a different move that does no damage, or inflicting confusion on itself. I switched to a Level 50 Lickitung, and when Caterpie finally went down, Lickitung's health was down to half. I was so confused by the fact that I decided to start another new game so I wouldn't get destroyed like this, and my friend wouldn't have a screwed-up file.

Yeah, thats because without badges Pokemon of a high level wont obey at all.
Anything above level 20 is pretty much useless at the start of a new game.
Its quite smart that they put in the restriction system, it means you effectively cant start a new game and use a level 100 to race thru it.
Definatly gets you more play time for certain
