I have already reviewed one Garfield title for the game boy advance, and that game was Garfield the search for pooky. Now a while later, they decided to released another Garfield title for game boy advance, and this one is Garfield and his nine lives, will this be a solid Garfield title, or will it flop? Let's find out.
Story-6/10 The story is not really explained in the game, but from what I have heard, this is it. After eating another huge meal, Garfield is ready for a long nap with a full belly. As he falls asleep, he starts having some very strange dreams as a result of overeating right before his nap. Each dream is crazier the last. Your objective is to help Garfield through this nightmare adventure by guiding him safely through of his nine lives. I guess that is the story.
Gameplay-7/10 Garfield and his Nine Lives has similar gameplay to Garfield the search for pooky, the last Garfield title I reviewed, but with a few differences. To complete each level, Garfield must accomplish a certain task, such as freeing all of the caged animals in the pound or saving nermal from being stuck up a tree. As in The search for pooky, Garfield eats food along the way, He can eat up to 100 pieces of food in a level. He can find hidden areas in a level by pounding on the floor or going through a door. Every three levels, Garfield must fight a boss. Now to be honest, the bosses aren't that hard, okay maybe just a little...
Graphics-8/10 Ah the graphics, now to be honest, the graphics are quite better then the previous Garfield title, they have quite alot more detail then search for pooky. The HUD is pretty self explanatory too, The top middle corner of the screen shows how many lives you have left until you get until game over, The top left hand corner shows your current amount of health measured by a tray of lasagna, and the top right hand corner of the screen shows how many pieces of food you have collected in the entire level. The backgrounds are quite detailed also, the farm level is quite sunny, The alley level has a dark red and sky and feels really dark, The tree level feels like, high treetops, and the haunted house level feels really spooky and exotic.
Sound-6/10 Hmm, the sound is pretty good for a Garfield game, all the songs seem to fit the levels QUITE well, the farm level has bright cheerful music, the circus level has really crazy, silly sounding music, the haunted house level has really scary exotic music. And yeah, that's pretty much it. The SFX on the other hand, are decent as well, you have a loud bash whenever you use Garfield's ground move, and you have your little chime noise whenever you collect food in the levels, I say for a licensed game, this is quite awesome! Oh yeah, and the death music, that song really got me the first time I heard it....
Addictiveness-6/10 This game kept me busy for quite a while! I mean, sure it's not the best Garfield title out there on the market, but at least it IS a decent one. The game just has that special charm that you don't get in other licensed games! I may sound like I'm treating the game too nicely, but that's because it is one of the more better licensed games I have played in my life. I mean, it is Garfield, so cut him some slack!
Depth-7/10 Hmm, this game offers 3 difficulty levels, Easy, medium, and hard. The only REAL differences between these 3 levels is how many extra lives the game starts you off, and most importantly, hard mode does not kid around, in this mode, you don't get ANY lasagna at all, only a real pro gamer can get through this mode in one piece! Oh yeah, if I remember correctly, you can revisit any levels to get anything you missed, such as food, pooky, etc. Yes, pooky is a collectible in this game, he's hidden in every level. One more thing, the game has over 10 levels, so this game will probably take you about 2-3 hours to beat.
Difficulty-5/10 Difficulty wise, eh, the game isn't that hard, but some parts can drive you off the wall, such as the alley cat boss fight. But mostly the fact that in hard mode, they don't give you any health pickups at all! So, you got to be aware of that. Otherwise, the game is still a cakewalk to play through and beat.
Overall-7.4/10 Overall, I think this is a great platformer for anybody who needs a Garfield fix, or a platformer fix in general. The game is pretty cheap on Amazon and ebay, so if you do find it, then I suggest you pick it up! I gave this game a 7.4 because how great it is a licensed title, we all know licensed titles and movie games suck ALOT, but not this one. So buy it now! This review is now done, if you have any games you want me to review, just request me via private message! Other then that, this review is officaly done, see you guys in my next review! Peace out! This game has been a pleasure to review....
