Tecmo Super Bowl. At one point in history, the most advanced football game on the face of this planet. Today- a legend. Those who have heard of it and are lucky enough to allow themselves to go back to the good old days and get away from PS2 are richly rewarded. Realism? None. But still, the best football game- maybe the best sports game- ever made.
GRAPHICS: A-
It does pain me to do this somewhat, because although the graphics aren't so great for today's games, it was fine for then. Also take into consideration that the graphics make the game easy and fun to play. Very well made snow. A- is a fair grade, considering the 1993 graphics.
GAMEPLAY: A
The modes in this game are fairly basic- Season, Exhibition, Pro Bowl, and a mode that allows you to view all the players on each team. Season is a very well put together mode, as there are three seasons you can go through, and there is also an included Three-Year Mode. There are no trades and no free agency, but this is still some of the best that SNES had to offer in football games.
It's fairly basic how the football games work. Worth mentioning is that you can only have 4 runs and 4 passes in your playbook, and you play defense essentially by trying to guess your opponent's play. Kicking is a power only meter on kickoffs, and a direction only meter on field goals. Realism is lacking- but this serves as a source of fun, not frustration.
SOUND: B+
Once again, take into account when this game was made (1993). The voice simulation isn't terrible, and the music that plays is well made and even fits the situation well- in the playoffs, the background music changes and has an air of desperation to it.
TIME FACTOR: A+
This game holds up incredibly well over all the years it's been out there. My copy still gets frequent play, and I've had it for 12 years. Although there is not one player in this game who is still in the National Football League, I remember playing it when they were mostly still there- and it's just as fun, if not more fun now. This game would not be successful today, but it will still be my favorite football game tomorrow.
TILT: A+
I know, I know, I've played this game for 12 years. I'm going to grade well for it, and, to be honest, there is not a better football game. Not even the sequels of this game match up.
RECOMMENDATION: BUY
If you can find it, this is the best football game ever made, including Madden 2006. Trust me, you won't be upset when Dan Marino runs for 100 and passes for 300 in the same game, when even Scott Zolak can throw 120+ yards. Tecmo Super Bowl. Physics is Nothing.
