thats probally true actually, i hadnt thought to make a 64bit test machine as well so i didnt see a crash problem. i'll have to look into that, but i spose then that cuts it, IE8 for my x64 machines

You have x64 comps too? Any x64 laptops not in use?

yeah, that review from cnet didn't even bother to address Chrome.

anyway, i have FF3 in addition to Chrome, though I rarely use it. It hasn't crashed once and the add-ons are pretty useful. Also, I've seen some reviews for IE 8... not impressive. People complain about it crashing still which could mean that it has the same problems as IE 7, being that it allows viruses to screw it up and upon detecting that the window closes or the browser restarts. I've even seen reviews saying SAFARI is faster. Ouch

anyways, Chrome, Opera and FF3 are still all better than IE 8; what a shock

Davideo: Me thinks 64bit is probably causing the majority of your crashing.

At the end of the day it comes down to personal prefference. Much like the next gen console debate.

Ziggy: I'm pretty sure it's impossible for the entire IE8 browser to crash so whatever reviews your reading are complete BS. The way IE8 works is that each tab is its own process so therefore a website can only cause 1 of the tabs to crash since it'd be ending that specific process.

Ok so, I decided to once again try out IE8, this time to check how tabs are handled.

It does it stupidly.

Ok so I start the program, 1 tab 2 processes. Makes sense, 1 process for the GUI and one for the tab.

I start a new tab, it adds a process. Makes sense.

I start two tabs it adds one process. Is weird.

I keep adding tabs and end up with 7 tabs, and 5 processes.

So that's 7 tabs using up 4 processes for tabbing.... what?

So that means that every tab CAN'T be it's own process.

I start closing tabs.

I stop with one tab left, and none of the processes are closed.

1 tab, 5 processes that clocks in at more than 140MB RAM together.

Good work IE, good work. At least closing the whole program kills everything.

Meanwhile with Google Chrome, the browser that did this sort of things first:

opens 1 process for every tab, and kills one process for every tab killed. Oh and it puts flash in it's own process so that it won't lag down the browser.

So IE tries to copy another browser and fails at it, what a shock.

Edit: Also that thing about the whole browser crashing, it is possible, same way that Chrome can crash. But it's highly highly unlikely unless Microsoft f***ed something up, and I don't think even they would f*** up so bad.

You still can't deny, IE8 is a large improvment over past IEs. But, IE will never be the best browser. Good, but not the best. But, at the time, I think IE8 is the best for x64.

Well you can't say it'll never be the best browser unless you have some way to time travel in order to see the outcome of all things. But yeah, it's definitely the best choice for people who have powerful computers / 64-bit processors.

David, I never got why you like IE so much despite all the proof that IE just pretty much gets the same features that every other browser gets, except later and worse and how it is inferior in security in every test ever made, and how it has less features, and less speed.

I... Don't get it. :/

I thought I already made myself clear. I use FF3 and it crashes on me a lot. I can go an entire week using FF3 and it'll crash at least 3 times, IE8 will not crash once. We've also concluded in this same thread that it's probably because my computer has a 64-bit processor and FF3 probably doesn't work well with a 64-bit processor.

Yes and I'm telling you that you should try out Opera/Chrome first then, because well they're pretty much better.

Also, most of the time it doesn't really matter that much if you use 32-bit programs on 64-bit processors, it's highly unlikely to cause any troubles.

Not to offend anyone in this post but I don't like either Firefox Or IE. First of all IE slows down then opens more than one window over and over until I turn off my PC and Firefox crashes so I use Google chrome.

Someone else agrees with me that Firefox crashes. But yeah, I'm not sure why it crashes more for some people than others but it's starting to sound like it's either because of the 64-bit processor or windows vista.

loled at title.

Anyways, were you using any add-ons? Some of them are known for creating problems, I know that my use of non-supported add-ons is the only fault for my occasional crash with FF.

Then again, FF without add-ons has to be the worst browser ever, like... I'm seriously thinking that IE might be better than it, because it sucks.

I like the new title

anyway, what I was trying to say before about IE crashing was from personal experience with IE 7, not reviews of IE 8. I figured they probably didn't completely fix those problems when I heard that IE 8 crashes periodically.

IE isn't supposed to do that.
Maybe It's a virus?.
