well, windows defender is just anti-spyware, so its no replacment for a firewall or anti-virus.
you could try zone alarm, from what i have heard its ok for firewall

edit: and as DM mentioned, a good hardware firewall will do the trick nice

I've heard of zone alarm, but what I heard wasn't good. It seems like it's a little "overly secure"

I use Zone Alarm. It's only overly secure if you set it up to be that way. You can customize it somewhat as far as what it does and doesn't block. I had a friend of mine try to hack me once and he wasn't able to. He's not like, a 1337 hacker or anything, but did know what he was doing. That made me feel at least somewhat secure in my choice for Zone Alarm.

I have heard complaints that the notifications asking to allow or deny programs get annoying. I used those for a little while, then turned them off. It knows mostly what it should and shouldn't allow by now.

This is the only firewall I've used, though, and there could certainly be better out there.

Wow, that certainly is a good way to test a security system. See if your hacker friend can break through.

I'm gonna use comodo firewall pro. It makes it seem like it costs money by the word "Pro" being in there but its free. Many people recommend it. It passes multiple leak tests. For freeware, it sounds like it should be payed for. They have an even better version of that. It's kinda hard to believe, huh?

Thanks Rocky. Thanks Ziggy. Makes 3 of us. Avast antivirus + comodo firewall = Good. Comodo also has an antivirus... i'm not sure if i should switch. I'll google it. Google always has the answers lol.

Edit: Cnet says its better. It uses multiple techs to find the thingys. And it says that it doesn't slow down your computer. This is a great day for meh. I really hit the jackpot, huh?

Darn it! Now my computer can't connect to the internet. I have even disabled Comodo and it still won't work. I'm having to use the family...desktop...to be here. This is bad. If Avast doesn't find the problem, i have no choice but to put it on Ebay for a lot more than its worth so i can buy a new macbook. Who knows? Maybe this is actually working out in my favor because if i sell my laptop for about $1000 that would be enough for a macbook...Then i could say goodbye to viruses and goodbye to many other good things that i can't do...well thats why there are windows emulators. I hope that my mom will let me sell my laptop...probably not though

Why is people so gosh darned bad at computers?

I have had my desktop for 5 years and counting and it works perfectly, my lappy is moving into one year and perfectly.

Protip: Spybot SD + Avast + Opera/FireFox + Updating windows + Common sense = No problem.

It's not that hard. : <

Personally, on many of my computers I have Windows OneCare, its not free, but its not alltogether that expensive and it works well and doesn't slow the computer down, at least that I have noticed. It also defrags and checks for broken things on your computer, and runs a "tuneup" when you just go through every one of it's options. It's a pretty decent program.

Well, my computer is fixed. I'm on my lappy right now. I am never going to even think about downloading a foreign firewall. I was kinda hoping to sell my laptop and get a macbook...oh well.
