I personally don't care about whichever I watch. More times than others, it feels like I tend to watch Standard Definition, as opposed to High Definition. Same goes for when I play games some times, even. Though, truly choosing a favorite, I'd go with High Definition. It really makes things look a lot smoother and a lot more beautiful most times, while Standard kinda makes things seem a bit bland and boring. While hard to believe, it really does seem to make a difference, Nya~.

I asked for it. This is what I wanted.

I used to have a TV that only supported Standard, but then I got HD TV. After a few years of watching in HD, I could never even stand Standard. So I really do like HD a whole lot more.

Husker Fan : There are pro’s and con’s to both but one thing that really irritates me is that most standard definition channels now of days are broadcast in letterbox format. It is especially irritating when/if you don’t have High-definition available and you’re watching a live sporting event. Sports were not meant for letterbox. It’s just one man’s opinion.

In regard to HD I prefer it now of days simply because most SD channels are like I said in letterbox format so to be able to watch something in full screen as it should be I tend to go with HD. I just hope that those who make DVR’s will figure out a way to give those who record HD programming more adequate storage. 50 Hr’s of HD recording for now is good but it goes by fast. I end up having to buy blank DVD’s in hundreds just so I can keep my DVR relatively clear. There are also pro’s and con’s between the two when it comes to sound quality but it all boils down to what someone prefers.

I just wish if a channel wants to air something that was not originally shot for HD I.E. movies and or, sports from many years ago before the current HD technology that it would be required to upconvert those programs to HD. The black boarders on each side of the screen while watching something that is on an HD channel but is not upconverted is very irritating.

I am going to make a guess.
This is a game site.
And what item in games have the Letters "H." and "D." added?
"H.D. Collections".

Like the Metal Gear H.D. set that has three games in one.
Like the Devil May Cry H.D. set that has three games in one.

SO, to answer I would have to go with "H.D."
Three games in one box asking for the cost of one is the way for me to go.

In the event this is used for Market Research I have to go with "H.D. sets".
If I did not? I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

Three is better than one.

Just a thought.

Good Luck To All.
I'm done. Stick a fork in me.
Peace.

AndyGer : Horse. Poop. I am tired of hearing that from people and refuse to believe anyone can't tell the difference. Now, if you just don't care that much, that's one thing, but if I put two identical HD TVs next to each other, one running an SD signal and the other running an HD signal, unless you just had the worst eye astigmatism there ever was, you would be able to tell a difference.

That said, as so many other people have pointed out, this is kind of pointless question; nobody would prefer standard definition content.

Now, you might see specific instance where a particular DVD looks better than a Blu-Ray of the same content, at least in some regards. Some times the crew responsible for an HD transfer will get lazy and do a really surface-level hack-job that makes the CGi effects stand out from the rest of the film more than they should, like the Blu-Rays for the theatrical versions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and that makes the DVD release preferable to some people, but that has nothing to do with the inherent differences between SD and HD--and for that particular example, the Blu-Rays of the director's cuts had a lot more effort put into their transfers, so...

Another point of contention could be playback of standard definition content on HD TVs, which is actually a pet peeve of mine. Whenever I see someone's regular DVD player hooked up to an HD TV with regular composite cords, I die a little inside, especially if they insist it looks good; it's so clear to me that they only got the TV as a status symbol and not because they actually understand why it's better, and that's a waste of money; if they can't afford a Blu-Ray player . . . well, a) why would they get an HDTV? but also b) they should at least use component cords, or an HDMI cord if it's an up-converting DVD player.

On a related note, videos games on HD TVs are a similar quandary. I keep an older TV for my older systems that can't display in HD, because, again, standard definition signal on an HD TV looks like crap. Some things look better than others; the SNES doesn't look that terrible, relatively speaking, and a handful of older games that run in widescreen almost make it worth it, but overall, well, I don't want to repeat myself.

While we're on the topic of HD formats, though, has anyone else heard of D-VHS? I remember reading about that a while back and thinking it was just the most interesting thing I had ever seen. I mean, imagine tapes in high definition, because that's exactly what it is. Crazy, right?

Really didn't expect to have this much to say when I saw this topic's title, but I am a bit obsessed with this sort of thing.

I'm so close to five hundred words. I'm just going to throw in some filler here at the very end...

Sun-Wukong : There are small differences that HD gives that looks better than Standard,  but you have to be watching an HD show. Which is only new shows, on certain channels. that may be why you don't see a difference.

You mean why other people can't tell a difference? Unless you mean "you" in general terms, rather than directing it at me, because the point I was arguing is that there is indeed a big difference.

I don't think I've replied to this yet, also not going to read all the posts to get the idea of the conversation going on... original post "Witch one do you like more???"

For me I prefer High-def for everything. Why? Because it's much more clearer and has a higher resolution (maybe those 2 are the same thing).

I can see how old definition would be cool for nostalgia but only for a little while, then you realize, "The current stuff is much more awesome" lol.

High Definition is definitely better than standard, however High Definition will shortly become the new "standard" as Ultra High Definition is set to become the new top end way of viewing TV shows and movies
Ultra HD is 4 times the definition of current HD so I would imagine the quality to be far superior
So in answer to what I prefer, it would be Ultra HD (until the next jump in quality comes along)

I can't really tell a difference with tv. Computer etc. I can go either way on, since both have their upsides.
