If you haven't heard yet, among the lot of 3DS news we got today, there was an announcement for a New Mario game: New Super Mario Bros. 2. Not much is known at the moment, but it's even more based on Super Mario Bros. 3 than Super Mario 3D Land, with the return of the Raccoon Suit, the P-meter, and the overall design. This game has a lot of gold objects, Gold Koopas, Gold Piranha Plants, even a new Gold Mario power-up. Not much else is known, besides the fact it's supposed to be released in August 2012 in Japan, America, and Europe.

Stevie 764 : It's... not a remkae. It's a sequel to New Super Mario Bros, or possibly the Wii sequel. The original New Super Mario Bros must have gotten a larger Mario fanbase, and it might REALLY help the 3DS sales. 3DS games always cost $40-$45.

I did hear about this.  I was about to make a thread for this, but you beat me to it.  I really cannot wait for this, but on the other hand, I kind of want it on the Wii or the Wii U.  I just want to know if it would be on the 3DS AND the Wii (or Wii U) or just the 3DS.  If it is just the 3DS, ill get it.  This game is going to be even more fun, better than the first one cause it has additional features that I saw and I love it.  It is bringing back the "Super Mario Bros. 3" lookalike with the leaf power.  I cannot wait for this game to come out.

As stated by Iwata, one of the goals of the game, aside from saving the Princess, is to collect 1,000,000 coins. It almost seems like Wario is the villan because of all the coins. Like Super Mario 3D Land, the game seems to take some elements from Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World. With the return of the Raccoon Suit, Reznor, and the Koopalings, it seems to be a throwback to the 90's Mario games more than ever. Cooperative play will return, although not much is known how it will play, but you will be able to play the main story mode with a friend.

The game is really far in devlopment, even the boxart has been confirmed. The European release date is August 17, 2012, and America gets it two days later. There's a new power-up similar to the ? Boxes (not Blocks) seen two or three times in Super Mario 3D Land, where moving around causes you to collect coins as you run. There are also Gold Rings, which turn enemies golden for a short amount of time. During this time, if you kill an enemy, they will give you five coins. Koopa Shells will a trail of coins, and pipes once inhabited by Piranha Plants will spit out coins. There's another new power-up called the Gold Flower. If you press the 'Y' button, huge gold fireballs will shoot from your hand, and all blocks in your way will become coins. Goomba Towers from 3D Land also return.

It's as IGN described it: predictibly solid. They aren't treading any new water with this release, it's just another solid mario game. Hopefully something more adventurous gets released later on.
