tom760 is back at work with doing updates to the RGR Plugin. We're expecting an RGR Plugin update very soon with a few nice features, tons of bug fixes, better game compatibility (especially gba rpgs) and more. But we're hoping to get some money to do even more updates, donating to the site will make these updates possible and quicker to have made. It takes a lot of time and money to get updates added to the RGR Plugin so please read the following features and consider helping make these dreams a reality.


We need donations for any of the following features to be possible, if we don't get donations, than none of this will happen. I can only afford to pay so much of it on my own.


Netplay
Imagine being able to play against someone in Mario Kart, Mortal Kombat, Tecmo Super Bowl or Goldeneye or with someone in Contra, Mystical Ninja, Perfect Dark or Donkey Kong Country. Imagine being able to actually battle others in the Pokemon games or to trade Pokemon with anyone on the site. The possibilities are endless with 1000s of games in the RGR having multiplayer, with this update, every single one of them could be played with someone on the site over the internet.

How many opportunities do you get to play a retro game with someone else? How many opportunities do you get to participate in a retro gaming tournament (that's right, we'd have weekly and monthly tournaments)? Help us make everyone's dream come true and donate to this great cause.

Disc Based Game Systems
Currently we're limited to cartridge based game systems, a whole new world would open up with the ability to play disc based games which could include:

-Playstation
-Dreamcast
-Sega CD

Man I'm so excited to read this announcement. So many nice features on the horizon if everyone donates a little.

I'm especially looking forward to Netplay. It would be awesome to play retro games against/with people online. Tournaments would even add to the excitement.

This looks really good, and I am looking forward to it. However, I do have one question. You mentioned that you were adding disk based consoles to the site (donations provided), but I was lead to believe that the site couldn't have them due to them being too big and band-width and so forth. How would you resolve this?

I was just about to ask the same thing Darkpower just brought up. I thought the issue was more than the cost of disc based console emulators. I thought that it would cost a fortune to purchase a server with the bandwidth capable of streaming that much information, but the list here says about $500. If that were the case, I would have pulled together pulled together a large sum to donate myself to get those on here. Is there more to it than that, or did you find some way around the issues?

Jordanv78 : When you think about the 10,000s of people who use the site each week (probably 100,000), if just 1 percent of them donated just $10, we'd have plenty enough money to pay for every single feature anyone would ever want and we'd have probably every retro game/system ever made added to the Plugin. $10 isn't much at all, I'm sure most of the people on this site spend that much just on junk food in a month.

Or if 4 wealthy people donated $250 each, that'd be enough for netplay.

legacyme3 : Not sure when that is but it could possibly be too late, Tom might only be available to do work for a few more weeks

Darkpower508 : Godaddy has recently offered servers which are literally 3 times more powerful than the previous servers they offered, have around 2 times more disc space and about 10 times more bandwidth for about the same price as their old servers (maybe even a little cheaper). With one of those servers, it would be possible to do this with 1 of the following exceptions:
1. Users can only play a certain amount of disc games a week (maybe like 5)
or
2. Disc games cost between 250-2500 Viz each (a game like Shenmue which has 3 discs would cost probably 7500 Viz to play through)
or
3. Ads appear in the play window for disc games for all users to help pay for the extra server fees
or
4. Make it so only users who have donated get access to play the disc games

Disc emulators like Playstation don't play games as well as cartridge emulators do so there'd be a lot of custom configuring involved and it would require a lot of staff to help test out the games and configure the proper settings for each game.
