An interesting article on the whole Megaupload shebang:
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2012/01/why-the-feds-smashed-megaupload.ars

Apparently they were actually pretty bad dudes. hm.

Argus Swift : What exactly did they do which made them pretty bad dudes?

aili : I completely agree, if someone isn't a threat to society it's ridiculous to throw them in prison for that long. Taking away their money and making them have to pay for it the rest of their life is good enough, taking 20 years away from them is overboard. Pedophiles get less time.

the founder was previously charged with back door trading and credit card fraud, plus he we operating out of hong kong despite being european, says it all really.
And the reason theyre not being released on bail is the founder dotcom is a resident of hong kong, new zealand, and holds a german and i believe dutch passport, as well as having a history of financial iregularities and back door trading, he poses a huge flight risk.

and he had an illegal shotgun in his houseand yes, i know THAT picture is false)

thenumberone : Wow, so this guy sounds like he was all about the money, greed. But they didn't take down his site because of who he was, they took it down because of what the site was and that part I don't like.

Davideo7 : Another infraction Megavideo did was they ignored.... I think it was nearly 2 billion requests to take down copyrighted material? I keep trying to find a source for this info; I have a very news-savvy friend who informs me of these, but I keep trying to find an article about it all myself. (clearly, I'm not all that big on news)

Argus Swift : You are correct. I talked about this a bit on the thread about MegaUpload being taken down. People read that thread and starting making crazy comments like this is SOPA happening before it is even passed, the government will take control of the Internet even if SOPA fails (and that MegaUpload somehow was proving that), and all kind of nonsense. That whole ordeal had nothing to do with SOPA. Heck, it wasn't even the fact that it ignored quite a few requests to take copyright material down. The thing that really nailed the site was that they were selling the copyright material. Once they decided to make a direct profit from with the material they had instead of just living off of add space live Vizzed does, they pretty signed the death certificate.

rcarter2 : Mega being taken down pretty much immediately after SOPA was dismissed was really just a case of bad timing.

On the silver lining of that, I guess it furthered embittered people to the concept of internet censorship. (at the cost of government trust, though? Idunno. I don't think the details of the Mega case has been made publically available.)
Davideo7 : was even unawares!

I'm glad to see that the site is still open. I couldn't imagine a world without vizzed.com. I get so much enjoyment from this site and that's before I even start to play the games. I'm only assuming that the bills were trounced due to the large number of people that voted, I even got my fiancée to vote to keep this site open. Yea for free speech and VIZZED.COM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

starwars293 : "SOPA" is gone, but there will be many more bills with different names, but the same sort of ideals in the future.

Actually, SOPA was "put on hold" but nobody supports it anymore, so it's as good as done for. I guess the better question is, if you believe it's gone, why are you still posting in here?
